I shoot Hunter PCP and sometimes Hunter Piston. Mostly because there was no way my back would allow me to shoot WFT. This year I had back surgery and I feel like a new man. As much as I respect the guys that do shoot WFT, I feel no need to sit on the ground. Most of my shooting is in PA.

Im from Ohio...when I first started shooting field target I shot Hunter piston and PCP. To widen my FT horizons I moved to shooting Open and really enjoyed shooting higher magnification scopes. Did that a few years and when the WFTF world championship came to the USA last year I decided to shoot WFTF PCP.

So I have shot the main classes in Field Target. What I like about shooting WFTF is the challenge of your wind calls. Even when you see nothing sometimes it's still there and at 12ft lbs can easily move a pellet outside the KZ. When there is considerable wind holding off the faceplate target is sometimes needed, you have to have the balls to hold that far off ...4-5" in strong wind is common. I also like shooting WFTF because that's how the sport was originally intended to be played. I truly believe getting up and down off the ground is good for your health as I get old and I will be 60 this fall. It's the hardest of the FT disciplines and that's how I like it. Also shooting at world championships is a hoot...I've got to meet a whole new bunch of FT dudes from all around the world.

My new experience in WFTF is shooting using the deadmans position, perhaps it will help me be more limber in my older age. We shall see how this goes.

I primarily shoot Piston WFTF. I come from a position shooting background, so I prefer shooting from position and figuring that stuff out. I have also shot Hunter Piston and Hunter PCP. I still dabble in the Hunter division, usually when I had enough of the piston gun for the year, when some health reason pops up, or just to give my PCP a chance to get shot. In comparison, Hunter PCP with a 20fpe gun is easy mode for me, and I prefer the challenges WFTF offers.

I don't expect to ever shoot in Open class. I figure if I want to shoot PCP from the ground like that, I will shoot PCP WFTF. I don't want/need the supports that Open offers, and whatever I learn from shooting PCP WFTF can be good training to improve my Piston WFTF game. I have certainly considered shooting PCP WFTF, but have yet to source the equipment I think is necessary to make it work for me.

The fact is that most people shoot Hunter DIVISION and PCP CLASS. Out of those two options most shoot PCP because it is easier to shoot. I personally could never "warm up to" shooting Hunter DIVISION so depending on my rifle I shoot PCP OPEN or WFTF. Piston guns are fun and challenging but PCP is way easier to work with.
Shoot what you enjoy.

Class: Hunter PCP
State: MD/PA
Reason: I'm fat, knees and back hurt. Kneeling lanes SUCK to get in/out of, I couldn't imagine getting up and down 8+ other lanes. I get the 'need/desire' for forced position lanes, I just dont care for them. Then again, I'm just out to have a little fun. I dont care about the competition of it all.

I shoot Open Piston primarily, but occaissionally Open PCP.
I prefer shooting open piston because of the challenge. My piston guns are sub 12 fpe and qualify as WFTF, but my back and knees wont allow me to "assume the position", so open class allows me to shoot with a harness, which supports my back.
I have tried hunter class but find that too easy. To me, there is no challenge there. When you have to hold the gun with both hands and read the wind (the BIG thing) to place your pellets in the KZ, I find that more than satisfying. Plus, I absolutely DISLIKE the almost concerted efforts to try to eliminate both the open class and the piston category. Not having any of that BS. To me, it equates to being able to drive stick (and double clutch) compared to driving with an automatic transmission. I can do both. Plus it is more fun shooting piston, so why not?

I shoot Open and have since I started field target. I guess the reason why is, that is what everyone was shooting when I started (Hunter was just getting traction). I even shoot the style I shoot because the person I was paired with at my first match had the rifle set up for that style of shooting (Kevin Yee).

Shot WFTF for the Worlds, had only shot one match at 12fpe prior to that, it was with an EdGun so it really doesn't count. I was pleasantly surprised that I could fold myself up into a stable position without the harness (deadman made it too difficult to find targets with limited time. I like the simplicity of WFTF but 12fpe in the west coast wind is brutal.
