I am thinking of getting an airgun for backyard target practice and the occasional squirrel. Everyone suggests getting something new from Pyramid or Airgun Depot, but I am also a huge fan of bargain hunting, which is why I love ebay and facebook market. I've searched craigslist and offerup, but there aren't many items for sale. Where else should I look for used guns? TIA.

Until then, I suggest you do some reading, ask a few questions, and get a feel for what you need/want. Make sure you account for everything you need, for example, a way to fill if you go the PCP route, a scope, and ammo, and don't forget to set your budget. There are lot of knowledgeable, helpful members here.

The classifieds on GTA are pretty slow, not much there. This place right here is the best classified ad source for Airguns out there. Who knows what you are getting on eBay and Craigslist is even worse. The other Airgun specific classified sites are just scammer infested. There are several retailers that sell used as well. These are probably the safest bet. The two biggest are Airguns of Arizona and Utah Airguns. Others include Baker Airguns and High Pressure Pneumatics.

GTA is legit as is AGW, but be sure to educate yourself to the ways of the scammers, and pay due diligence. Don't be afraid to ask for help BEFORE you send any money. AGW has a lot of scammers, FYI. This is probably the safest forum thanks to our 10 meaningful post 10 day rule, although many newbies criticize them. Michaels house (forum owner), Michaels rules. Bad players get outed pretty quick here.

Airguns of Arizona

I’ve been very happy with purchases in the classifieds here but can’t speak about the others. You can save time, money and effort by deciding what you want to do. There is no single gun that, in my opinion only, does everything well. Do you want a pcp? You’ll need either a hand pump or a compressor. A co2 gun? Several to pick from like the Benjamin AR2078A. A good target gun that will be effective on pests out to 30 yards but I don’t know about longer distances. A pump gun? Minimal support equipment and lots of good ones. The Daisy 880 has a good reputation and I’ve heard good things about the Crosman Vapor Max which looks a lot like the 880. Do your homework, make a budget and immediately add 20% to it. Many good choices available.

Being a bit naive is improper care and maintenance more so a concern for an air gun left sitting as opposed to a more traditional powder burner? For example can PCP’s be damaged if just left sitting unused for a long period of time?
To some degree, yes. Seals/ o-rings can and will degrade with age, not really damaging to the gun itself, but requiring maintenance. PCP’s can have a few, or a few dozen o-rings.
