I should have taken some before pictures but didn’t think about it until I was cleaning up. I have done this to many stocks that have a poly finish old and new.
I got this older P70 laminate stock and the finish was looking old and dry and even has some crazing. This won’t help the crazing but will help hide it a bit.
I start by wiping down with alcohol just to clean any old oil off. Followed by wet sanding with 2,000 or higher grit sandpaper. Just trying to take off the oxidation and any nibs or really high spots in the finish. Doesn’t take much. You will see a whitish film in the stock and in bowl of water. Just a quick light pass is enough, you don’t want to burn through.
Clean the stock again with alcohol. Polish with some rubbing compound. The poly is fairly soft, I use Meguires Mirror glaze which is not very aggressive. At this point the stock should be shining. It will still have wavy orange peel but without knowing the thickness of the factory finish I don’t want to risk burning through.
Wipe again with alcohol and apply a hard carnauba wax. I like floor wax because of the high carnauba content. It also leaves the stock feeling clean without being slick.
