N/A A short edit in response to the California Ground Squirrel plague

I was near Alpine Wyoming about 3 weeks ago and they were already down too. It was 34 degrees one night.

By mid July there typically disappearing and by August .. yup nowhere to be seen till late winter early spring @ feb or so.

Best pesting is just as winter is losing its grip and previous years survivors are in a breeding frenzy chasing one another all over the fields & new growth alfalfa is pretty non existent. Late march into mid may can be epic !!! When the females are birthing / nursing post then only the males are out and there pretty skiddish as the first growth Alfalfa is still too low to offer much food or protective cover just yet. When the youngsters come out several weeks later they hang by the burrow entrances and thats when times can be really nuts !!! as they have no clue of whats happening around them be it good or bad

Using a .17 hmr then is like bowling .. hit the lead pin ( Squirrel ) and the whole cluster that I've witnessed at 4-10 individuals simply vanish in a cloud of flesh mist Later in the spring season you get, taller becomes the alfalfa and the squirrels can only be seen when they stand up or if lucky able to pick them off burrow dirt mounds. Really need to find a contact person you can call there locally to hear how the weathers doing, 1st cut on the alfalfa etc ... It's is pretty wild place and the year to year weather by the months does flux quite a bit. Hard winters kill more squirrels too than mild winters. Populations ebb and tide so one must enjoy being there good shooting or otherwise.
Do have fun tho ... Nothing quite like it.

In my neck of the woods itās the Colombian ground squirrels and ours come out a bit later, more like April. And this year the fresh crop of young ones that are very unaware didnāt come out till July. Went to Montana for a few years where they were more prolific , those were Richardsons squirrels there from what I have heard. Lots of fun where ever they are !
