Taipan 25 Caliber Taipan Vet 2 Standard

Hello, forum newbie here. I’ve been lurking here for a few years, since picking up a modified Benjamin Discovery in 22 caliber from a friend.

I’ve really enjoyed the freedom of using the disco for target shooting and pest control in the yard. For the last year or so I’ve been thinking of picking up another PCP. I recently sold a short range benchrest rifle that I wasn’t using much and dove down the rabbit hole of researching higher performance PCPs. My choices came down to a Huntsman Revere in 22 vs a Taipan Veteran. Two completely different styles, but they both had something that I was looking for in a rifle.

Many of you unknowingly steered be toward choosing the Taipan Veteran 2 Standard in 25 caliber. I felt like it checked the most boxes for me in how I will most use the rifle. On Monday I placed my order with Tony at Talon Tunes. Yesterday I received my shipping confirmation and tracking info and to say that I’m excited to get my hands on it would be a major understatement….lol.

I look forward to sharing my journey here on the forum.
AHH, we've entered the Taipan rabbit hole! This brand does not have the most followers, but it has the most dedicated followers. It usually takes about 2 months, but at first, you really like it, but then you get to the point of not ever envisioning yourself WITHOUT one. LOL!
I've bought several, and only sold one to buy a different model that suited me better or when getting a next gen version. There will always be Taipan in my stable.

That sounds eerily similar to my path with CZ center fire rifles. I bought my first one in 2017 and I was up to 5 when they dropped the 527 and 550 lines. I wouldn’t be surprised to see same thing happen with Taipan air rifles. I’m really enjoying the fact that I can shot at home without a 3 hour round trip drive to the range.

Thanks! I’ll check out those ASA 25.4s. I did grab one tin of JSB 33 Gr MKIIs with my initial order. So far it’s the only other 25 caliber pellet that I have on hand. I’ll let you know how they shoot when I get around to trying them out.
Sounds great. Probably have to crank up the hammer spring a bit. I've got 6 -25 caliber air rifles. 2 taipan vets, 2 hatsuns, 1 zelos and 1 kalibergun cricket carbine. I really like the caliber. Also have an average and kalibergun cricket tactical 60 in 22.

Don't even get me started on center fire. I have 53 pistols/ revolvers and can't recall how many center fire rifles as well as rimfire. 😆. Many years of shooting and acquiring them.

Hi all you Taipan Veteran owners, I am now the proud owner of one, full power. I have not actually used it yet for various reasons but that will change soon 😁. Do any of you use pellets and if so can the rifle be adjusted for pellets just by adjusting the hammer spring or do you have to mess around with the regulator? Any help will be greatly appreciated

I haven't played with my regulator on either of my Taipans. For pellets I don't think there's any problem just using the hammer spring for pellets. On my Taipan tactical 2 700mm which I bought used. It had the stronger hammer spring installed and with the 700mm barrel. Just for more fps slugs. But I think pellets shouldn't be a problem

Excellent, thank you very much, so hard to find any tuning information on these

Hi Vaughan,

I see you recently joined AGN in March. There are many good Taipan threads with good helpful information on AGN. Just search on Taipan, and start reading. Plan to spend some time and you’ll pick up a lot of tips on pellets used, what weights, velocities attempted, tuning tips, etc.

Agree with “Actionpistol” that you can easily adjust “just” your HS and try some different pellet brands and weights at various velocities. You didn’t say what caliber you purchased or what your intended use will be.

In any case, there is plenty of owners that will share their experiences with you once you get started.

I had a Taipan .25 Long Laminate Vet1 ( sold) and currently have a Vet2. .22 Long with 700mm barrel, which I will never sell. It’s just too good, and very accurate with a variety of pellets.

Good luck with your new Taipan.

Tom

Hi Tom
Thanks for the great response, I have the Taipan Veteran 2 Tactical, forest green laminate in .25 full power and will be using it for rabbits predominately and some target. Need to be able to swap between pellets and slugs depending on the land I’m shooting on but great to hear that the adjustments can be made from the HS. Really impressed with the build quality, I spent months researching on what to buy, where I live doesn’t offer any chance of seeing various options first hand so had to visit large shows and gun shops close to the shows but I am confident I have made the right choice 🤩. I will search as you suggest and gather more info
kind regards
Vaughan

Since you're looking for slugs. My Taipan Vetran tactical 700mm 2. Likes the JSB KO slugs at 943 fps. I also tried. Multiple pellets and JsB 33.95 Mk 2's were incredibly accurate. But unfortunately I didn't record the fps but I'm thinking it was between 850 and 930 fps. But I don't remember. Easy enough to figure out though. Mine is also 25 just with the longer barrel

I have to admit my vet 1 stable is growing. A vet 1 long in chassis 22 and a 177 standard will be added in the next couple of weeks. The 177 is an interesting trade #2 with Rm100guy who is responsible for getting me in the vet platform and yes they are rear cocking but such a solid and accurate gun. Thanks Russell for prodding me into these.

Yes I have a Vet 1 long in 25. I'll definitely tolerate the rear cocking. Not going anywhere except to the range for shooting. Which is my yard

A couple suggestions:

Try the MK2 33g JSB pellets, as “Actionpistol” has done. Those pellets have a good rep in .25 cal rifles.
You can also test the KO slugs, but depending on hunting distance for rabbits, you should be fine with pellets. You did not specify your min/max hunting distances.

Don’t know if either JTS or AEA make .25 cal .25g and .33g pellets, but if they do, try those also. They are good quality brands.

You could also contact Tony @ Talon Tunes and inquire about slug suggestions.

Set up a target stand at 30, 40, and 50Y to shoot some groups to test various pellets ( and / or slugs) and velocities. Once you identify a pellet/slug brand, weight and velocity you like; you can hone in on adjusting your HS for your rifle.

Moral of the story. You need to test various projectiles for your rifle, and at your desired hunting distances.

Edit: AEA makes a .25 caliber .25g, .29.5g and .33g dome pellets. I have a feeling one or more will like your barrel.

This gun is easy to adjust. Only thing I did was change the hammer spring to a heavy one - same as vet one that tony sells. As for slugs AVS 38g dish base diameter .2523 was the absolute best I've shot so far.

Hi, thanks very much for this, I have collated a fair collection of slugs and a few pellets, I am hoping that the JSB Hades work well, been impressed with these in my sub 12 .22 for pest control. Thanks for the process tip, I have a new Zulus V2 and was not sure what came first with zeroing, adjusting grouping etc but I think I have a way forward now. Re Tony at Talon Tunes, do you think he would be helpful considering I have not bought from him?
Best wishes

Re. Tony - Not 100% sure, good question though. I think he does most/all his testing with pellets, but you can try sending him an email. He sees a lot of past and future Taipan potential buyers, so he should have an opinion on slugs.

Slug testing can be exhausting and expensive. Candidly, if you’re shooting and hunting rabbits at distances of 50Y and less, I would spend your time testing the pellets that were recommended first. That answer changes to using / testing slugs for 75 yards or greater.
