How to Use a Corbin S Press - A Thread Geared Toward Beginners

The corbin press is very good ! I have been making 217 hollow point dish base with no trouble . I have used 200 and 210 wire . Question for you fellas that make boattails . I have the boattail punch and 185 lead wire as suggested by Kelly at Corbins . I have to work at getting the slugs to release from the boattail base punch [work hard] I did not change the size of my wire cutting dies [no one at Corbin mentioned it] Any thoughts on this will be appreciated ! Corbin is closed till monday . Thanks

@UDABEGGAR In my experience using a core cutting die that is too large causes uneven cutting and sheering of the cut lead core(s) from the wire. This uneven can cause the core to fit into the die unevenly or prevent it from being inserted or dropped into the die cavity.. I'm not sure how it affects removal from the base punch. I haven't made any boattails in months. When I have slugs that are tough to remove it's usually from smaller calibers and it involves removal from the nose punch. I try to be sure to use adequate swage lube on the cores. To remove tight slugs from the punch pin I twist and rock the projectile. To get a better grip on the projectile I keep a shop rag or shop paper towel handy to grip a lubed up projectile in order to twist and rock it loose. Sometimes the this mars the finish of the projectile and I'll reswage it to correct slight deformities. I'm not sure if much of what I'm saying helps you or applies to your situation.

I to have to grip the slug and add a little wiggle to it to release from hollow point punch but it is not to hard . But from base upside down is a mo fo . I will contact Corbin about the cutter die in 185 dia . That info should have came up when I ordered the boattail part ! Thanks Ezana !
@UDABEGGER No problem. I wish I knew more to pass on that is helpful. Please let us know what the folks at Corbin tell you. I meant to ask, where did you source the lead wire that you're using and having issues with?

From Corbin and also ordered a round nose vs hollow point pin . They special build them to your dies specs . Kelly recommended it . I do use lead wire [200 dia] from American die with good results and cost effectivness . You probably know more about all this than I do . I am a 71 year old child . :p
@UDABEGGER Maybe review a few posts starting from post #49 in this thread.

I swage lots of different styles of slugs. Sometimes things stick like the core on the hollow ogive punch. Or the boat tail punch. I use a qtip with a little swage lube to wipe a little on Whatever punch is causing issues. You may have to do this every once in awhile 5 or ten slugs etc. The X punch sticks the most but it is so worth it when you shoot something like a gopher or grackle!🤣
I am also 71 and loving retirement!!

@Ezana4CE great thread. I don’t know how I missed this thread before I ordered my Corbin press, but I did. My wife told me to wait and get the Big Horn. But, I decided I didn’t want to wait. i‘m excited and I can’t wait until my press with .30 cal dies arrives. This thread has given me a lot of good info while I wait. I didn’t order the stand and so I’ll try building something first. I was out of range of internet the last few days and so I downloaded Corbin’s E-book and read it five times over lol.
