Reticle questions

I'm looking for a new 4-16 ish range scope and was looking at Athlon reticles, along with others and it hit me. Does anyone really use al those tiny graduations on the reticle. I mean 1/2 mildot is ok, and I would say 5 moa marks are plenty don't you think? I'm beginning to hate Christmas tree reticles, as they are just too busy for me, especially the dot trees, the crossbar trees are better, but overkill in my mind.

I'd like to see a reticle similar to Hawke's AMX, but with a tiny bit thicker crosshairs and a very thin center cross or small dot. Vector Veyron 10x44 has a reticle similar to this also.

What's your preference for reticles?

Take a look at the Blackhound Genisis, great scope for the money. I have 2 of the 6-24

Same, i don't use the windage holdoff dots. In the VPR/APR reticles. I prefer the VHR type reticles. Same MRAD/MOA incremented reticles. NO christmas tree or other holdoff

If you use the reticle to estimate range and game sizes perhaps. I have the element christmas tree and I don't use it as much as I used to, I really like the arken reticle on the 4-16x44. So much so I'm looking to divest from as many of my vortex, weaver, leupolds as I can to have my entire collection wearing the same or similar scopes in ffp.

I tune almost all or my guns for high power and wind isn't as much of a issue and I've been practicing just guessing wind dope a lot more recently without the dots. My opinions have changed a lot in the last few years too.

haven't found a reticle that is not to thick or red dot not small enough yet . Even "irons " the front sight post on a pistol is 4 or 5 times thicker than the 10 ring on targes i shoot .

Use really does dictate if or not hold points are required at all ?
As a competitive Hunter class FT shooter, absolutely !!! Busy as it looks having .2 mil marks between full mil marks is fabulous :giggle:
Tho ...If staying inside realistic distances plinking and just general light pesting etc .... a simple duplex reticle with practice on minor hold correction with estimated distances can be made to work quite satisfactory ... IMO

This may help.

I like having plenty of what I call "tic marks" on the reticle. I mostly shoot paper targets and if a shot goes high or wide it is useful to compare the POI to the aim point so I can hold a compensating amount for the next shot. It isn't important to me the value of the reticle mark, the importance is just a reference point. I have scopes with simpler reticles but for future purchases I will buy ones with more complex markings. But I respect that others have different preferences.
