Western Airguns Western Airguns Mordax Venom

Super helpful, thank you. Its not that different from a hammer-hits-valve gun in that regard. The "best" theoretical tune would be a crazy high reg pressure with just enough of a bang to open the valve. That would launch a pellet fast with not much air volume. The realities of spring forces, hammer power, and valve opening times means that it's just not practical to get good accuracy that way on most guns. The hammer force makes the gun jumpy and the valve dwell time and air released get too variable for consistent accuracy.
I'm glad it helped, but the firing mechanism really is massively different from a hammer-hits valve gun in this regard. The valve opens the same regardless of closing valve setting and probably even regulator pressure too - it is basically a "blow open" valve held close until the sear releases, and it simply opens and lets air flow. It is the closing valve setting that determines how much air flows, and my experience with this system one can get lower power best with a lower regulator setting - although Western recommends that we not lower the regulator setting below the factory level (not so with the Huben - I have run mine as low as 90 bar with great success, but usually have it around 110 for other reasons).

I have not seen an animation of how the Sidewinder works, but here is one of the Huben and they are very similar. The first eight seconds is of the regulator, but after that is shows the action cycling - it is worth seeing a few times to catch everything going on. It is hard to see but the closing valve sits in the air stream and stops the firing cycle (which is why these guns can dump most of their air on a jam - the blocked air flow path leads to resistance that keeps the closing valve open). Note also that the closing valve does not fully seal off the air flow, but merely interrupts it enough for the gun to reset - there is actually a small "leak path" in the valve seat to let the high pressure air through to refill the firing chamber and reload pressure on the opening valve (although you can't tell this from the video). It really is an amazing ballet of mechanical action . . .

I'm pretty sure you have to dump all of the air out of the tank, and then dial down your reg screw. Then you fill it back up. You can increase power with air in the system, but you can't lower it.
I read through the owner's manual, and I was wrong here - if you want to lower the regulator pressure you have to empty the tank.

You can adjust the power up or down without having to do anything but turn the pressure screw one way or the other.

Obviously, this is for the original mordax regulator. Has anyone found any literature for thy Venom Booster Kit? I'm going to email Western Airguns to see if they have anything.

I found the following power specs interesting too. Note a min of 135 bar is required for the full auto function to work. The lowest they recommend setting it to is 110 bar, and in the regulator adjustment specs they advise against adjusting the regulator altogether.

initial thoughts. even better than I expect...this thing absolutely rips.

I havent touched anything yet. reg, power wheel, nothing. with a fill to 250bar (mid yellow) I can consistenly get three mags (42 shots) thru without getting close to reg levels. chrono'd at 700-710 very consistent fps. accuracy is off the charts for a gun with such a short barrel. @ 50 yards you can damn near stack pellet on pellet. I sighted it in at 25y and @ 50 yards it shoots maybe 1.5" low. I didnt shoot it any further than 50.

Only rounds I put thru the Modax were JSB Hades and they shot perfect, i dont feel the need to test other pellets. side note, I wanted to see how it would shoot FX Hybrids and the slugs were too wide for the magazine..wouldnt seat.

Took it out for a walk around the barn property to see if any squirrels were foolish enough to be within 50 yards...turns out there was a few willing participants. at 710 fps with 26.5 grain Hades the Mordax is generating 29 ft lbs. more than enough to level a few ground squirrels.

venom manual was the exact same as the regular model

played around with the power knob a bit yesterday..I would say this was 8-10 clicks counterclockwise from factory. I have no idea how close I am to maxing it out. Easy 2 mags thru without a refill, possibly three if I was filling with a compressor to 300bar rather than a dinky field bottle that really can only get the tank to 250bar on a good day. Regardless, the consistency of this gun combined with semi auto capabilites is mind blowing All my FX guns wish they had this kind of FPS consistency..hahaha

I'm also so very enthused with my Venom in 22 cal. It's the coolest little pcp I've ever had by a huge margin. Unfortunately mine showed up with the barrel set too tight against the magazine but once that was discovered and fixed(supper easy fix BTW) I was up and running and now just short of a full tin of pellets through it without any further problems.

These guns are expensive but the fun factor they provide is well worth it. It truly is a modern marvel! Oh and some applause to Western for giving us a real barrel that actually screws into the receiver.

I've been having so much fun with mine I haven't even shot it off a proper bench and bags yet nor chrono'd the 16 grainers. But at 30Y it was no problem hitting 1" steel round knockovers while resting elbows on a wobbly patio table and rested off the grip.

My ongoing review

played with some 30 and 33 grain slugs in the mordax this afternoon to see how they would shoot. As we would all expect, this is not a slug gun (too slow velo and barrel far too short) accuracy was crap compared to pellets. Sub MOA with pellets, 2-3" groups at 50y with slugs (which I was was actually surprised it was able to do that well). I've had 600-700mm FX guns that were worse..
