HW/Weihrauch Ok Weihrauch Airgunsmiths, I need some advice... HW35 Barrel Latch Worn

Chambers….but maybe not for 1770.
Of course the new compression tube would cost more than the rifle is worth.
Ooops.... That would be an early model indeed. 🤣 I think that I've got a way to repair it. I was just hoping that someone had come up with an easier way.

...so what? He has to tap the barrel down as on any other Weihrauch break barrel. The barrel does not flop down by itself?...
Chuck's right. I'd like the rifle to perform as it should. I shoot from a bag for the most part. If I plop the rifle down on the bag a little too hard, the barrel will break open slightly. I'd prefer that the latch worked properly. It's still very accurate, but it's a piece of mind sorta thing.

I would start with a fresh and likely stronger spring within the latch assembly.
Then again a strong spring will also create greater wear as latch post rubs on breech face even harder ...
This is REALLY good advice - I have a 70's vintage HW35 like yours that had the exact same problem - I could break the barrel like it was a HW30!. But I sent it to Motorhead who installed a fresh spring and, presto - it's tip top and is one of my sweetest shooting springers! My breech face and the latch both showed some signs of wear, but the old, weak spring was most of the problem. Certainly worth trying!!

I think I said that like on page one . Post #2 matter of fact . And gave the parts source..lol. come on man ..lol

I keep forgetting to check on that latch when I get home from the shop. I've got quite an assortment of gunsmith quality compression springs in varying sizes and strength. I'll find something with a little more resistance than the spring that's in there now and see if it corrects the issue. I'd love for it to be such a simple fix. I'm off tomorrow. I'll give it a go and report back here.
I want to thank everyone who chimed in. you guys are the best!!! (y)

Update: The video is before I installed a new spring. I took Motorheads' and Mr. Hateful McNasty's advice and put some tension against the release lever and tried to break the action open. It seemed to hold much better. I took it down and found a slightly stronger spring and installed it. The gun will still open without depressing the lever, but it takes a lot of force. A lot more than a typical break barrel. It should be fine now. Thanks for all of the great feedback folks. Saved me from a huge project.

In reference to the barrel opening while smacking it….Mine does not and I smacked hard enough three times to leave a welt on my hand.
On the other hand , Duckfish said today at lunch his does.
When closing, mine latches out with a very loud CLICK!
I normally store it with the barrel out of battery to relieve pressure on the breech seal..
DITTO, the R1..
