N/A Accuracy problem - Did you do a pellet check?

A friend called, all upset that his new PCP didn't shoot well at all.

I asked what pellets he tried and he said just some Crosman Hollow Points. So
I told him to bring it over.

A quick test with several different weights of pellets showed that the PCP was factory tuned to 25 grain pellets and the 14 grain Crosmans were way too light.

Two choices to resolve the problem - shoot the 25s or retune to another pellet.

He chose to shoot a couple of tins of the heavy pellets to break the gun in then he would be back and we would tune to a lighter pellet.

So, just a suggestion for that shiny new airgun... try a variety of pellets, choose the best performer for the break-in and revisit the pellet choice when the gun has settled in.

Hope this save someone some stress! 🙂

Cheers!

It''s amazing to me that anybody would get upset because their new airgun would not shoot the cheapest pellets they can find accurately. I would expect that and in half my 22 caliber pcps that is what I get. The other two will shoot them OK but definitely worse than more expensive pellets.

Relative to weight, however, my Stoeger Bullshark in 22 shoots Crosman domed (what I had on hand) about 950 fps but they are pretty accurate. Like a 194 30 yard challenge. JSB 18s shoot better at more like 860 fps with the same tune but they only gave me a 198. For many purposes the Crosmans might be good enough. I haven't tested them beyond 30 yards, however.

My view is Crosman are OK plinking pellets in some guns but should not be expected to be very accurate. You might get a pleasant surprise in a gun but you shouldn't count on it. And a gun tuned for 25 grain is not going to also shoot Crosmans well. 18s maybe. But not 25s.
