N/A old man that is newby to air guns

I have a Benjamin Trail in .22 that would work to 30-40 yards but I haven’t tried it past that. I forget what scope is on it now but budget $100 for it and shop around and you should be fine.

yes i think that will be my gun,, it meets all my criteria and is not too costly.. next is a good scope..BTW how loud is yours.. FYI i am getting the 25 cal. and what ammo are you using in it ?

I'm still hung up on the groundhog thing, and agree wholeheartedly with Mycapt65. An airgun strong enough to cleanly kill an animal that size is gonna lean toward a PCP that is darn near as loud as your rimfire, so if it's legal at your location, I too would favor subsonic .22lr ammo.

If you just want to shoot for fun and hunt critters up to rabbit and squirrel size, there are countless quiet springers that can do that job.

maybe am wrong,, wouldn't be the first time (according to my wife) but i thought at 900 fps and high 20s fpe a 25 cal to the head would drop a Ghog. like i said 20 to 40 yards max is my shots.

I have the Hatsan 135QE in .25 caliber. Over 850 fps with 25 grain pellets. Not another spring rifle as powerful. No way would I use it on Ground Hog. 22 rimfire at 40 yards can be a stretch. They are incredibly tough critters. I used a 22 Hornet for years on them. Had to rid a horse coral. Humane kill. They dropped in their tracks. Horses can break a leg in their holes. I do not like to kill animals. Wounding them is worse.

Not loud at all. I’ve got about 3 different types of pellets and can’t tell you anything about them. Give me a few minutes.

the 2 i have killed here in the backyard were with a 20 gauge at 30 yards with 4 shot ,, 3inch shells. they were body shots mostly.
now a 20 ga #4 muzzle speed is around 1175 to 1200 with the shells i used but slows down to around 785 fps at 30 yards were as a 22 with a 950 muzzle speed drops off to round 850 at 30 yards according to the research i have done ,, i know the 22 is maybe 3mm smaller the a #4 shot but none of mine hit the head it was body shot.... chek my numbers and make sure ,,like i said before i could be wrong.

Keep in mind it's not just about velocity, but energy - a function of projectile mass, and the square of its velocity. Yes, a powerful airgun can have muzzle velocities approaching that of a shotgun load or rimfire bullet, but with a projectile that is lighter and less ballistically efficient. It carries less energy, decelerates faster, and places only a fraction of the hitting power on a distant target.

A 40-grain .22lr slug doing 1100 FPS generates around 110 foot-pounds of energy (FPE). An 18-grain .22 pellet at 800 FPS (which is quite a bit more than most springers can do) is about 25 FPE at the muzzle and again, much less than that at 30 yards.

ok ,, ok i am convinced,, air ain't the way to go,,, so this is the perfect time to get something i been wanting anyway, and with the wife hating these varmits as much as i do it won't be a hard sell.. gonna pick up a henry 22 lever ,,24 inch octagon threaded barrel . slap a good scope on it and buy some sub sonics... then practice ... i got the makings of a good backstop..... and i can practice 40 to 50 yard shots. does that make more sense now ?
i will save up and get me a silencer and get thru the paper work,, i heard they just passed a bill doing way with the 200 dollar price tag. still pass all the paper work but not pay.
i am still wanting to get a breaker for plunking around the house i got a mess of tree rats too.

Ground hogs are tough critters for sure, except when slow cooked with some "Sweet Baby Rays." LOL.
When we were kids, Dad use to tell us not to shoot one if he's looking straight at you, because the bullet will just veer off of their skull. Instead, aim for the side of the head, temple area.
Back then, I used my .20 caliber Sheridan air rifle to take out several, maybe half a dozen or so using the factory "trashcan" pellets that came in the yellow plastic containers. Always in the side of the head like we were told. Set up about 20 yards from their main entrance hole and wait... and wait.... and wait. Eventually they'd come out and present a shot. Sometimes an up close follow-up shot was needed to finish them off.
Just a few years ago, my youngest son removed one from the crawl space under his grandmothers home. Couldn't use a powder burner under there so he used his .22 caliber Crosman 1400 to take it out. One shot in the temple and another for good measure. It was stone dead. that gun shoots at 14fpe with ten pumps.
Point is... If you have to use an airgun on one, a minimum of 12fpe is needed and to be within 20 yards to kill one, otherwise use a PB as stated above.

this is the scope i am looking at real hard ........

Burris Optics Droptine 4.5-14x42mm Riflescope W/ Ballistic Plex Reticle, Matte Black

not made in usa ,, philippines .
Be careful!! If memory serves I don't think they focus under 50yds. Better clarify that with the company first.

Even if you focus on buying used, it will be difficult to find a quality (accurate) spring gun in the $300-350 price range. HW50s or hw95 are great options if you can find one in your price range. Hatsan spring guns have mixed reviews for quality and accuracy.

A Umarex notos PCP, with a hand pump and a budget scope, would likely be a better option and give you a lot of capability for your $$$.

Good luck choosing

i would second this. under 400$ you can have the notos, scope, hand pump. i’m almost certain it can take ghogs at 30-40 yards headshot. the gun is quiet and accurate with acceptable fpe in stock form. if the gun arrives empty, it will take a little longer to fill but if it arrives with at least 2000psi, it’ll only take 2-3 minutes to top off with a manual pump to 3625psi. just don’t let it drop to empty and top of every 20 shots to keep the burden of pumping at the very minimum.. like 55-60 full cycle pumps(1 cycle being 1up 1down motion). i’ve counted from experience.
i’m going make a prediction of the future and say that once you get the trigger fever, you’re going to want more.. hahaha
