I can't really help you out Ken since I think this varies with different guns. So hopefully another Impact owner can give you some good info.
I have found myself going the other direction with moderators lately. Working with a couple of .22's which have shorter barrels, and therefore shorter shrouds. What a big difference that can make in muzzle noise! Wanted to 'keep them short' with a smallish .22 mod, but just too much bark remaining for my back yard. So I went with a longer/bigger .22 mod, then a big & long .25 cal mod, and lost accuracy. Didn't get it back until I put on a .30 cal Falx, which ended up giving me both the accuracy and the noise reduction. Maybe their 'staging' innerds (first stripping air from the pellet, then moderating sound) has some merit beyond marketing. And I don't think it was an issue with a specific gun as I went through the same exercise with 2 different guns.
So depending on the gun you have to worry about 1) will it clear without hitting, 2) does it moderate the sound adequately and 3) does it adversely impact accuracy, even without physical clipping.
Sometimes these airguns are a bit much for my old & addled brain to deal with!
