H&N Baracuda sorting

I got a pellet delivery from Utah Airguns today. I ordered them last week when they had free shipping. I thought I ordered the "match" pellets I normally shoot but I did notice the price was low but thought maybe they were just reducing stock. I shot a few and they were OK considering wind is close to 15mph. But I decided to weight sort them and check head size. The picture shows the weight sort results. Most were 21.1 grains and about 50 are 21 grains. One is 20.9 grains. I checked 10 pellets for head size including some from each weight group. All are 5.53. I think this is very consistent for lower priced pellets ($8/200). I need to read things more closely but it looks like I got good pellets anyway.

Shot a 30 yard challenge target with them this morning. 193 8X. My best this year is a 198 and I shot a 195 4 days ago - both with the Match pellets. So maybe these are a little worse or maybe it's just me. But for most things, at least, these are good pellets in this gun. I will try a few more targets.

I checked head size on all these and they were 5.53.

I shot my second target with these pellets this morning. I got a 198, 13X equal to my best this year. I got there a little different. My first 198, with Match pellets had 4 19s and I could only exclude 2 so I got a 198. This time I lost 2 points on 1 8 I could not exclude. I had about the same number of non-10 shots but some of them really wandered. Not sure if it was me or what. There was a little wind and I wasn't paying close attention. But a 198 isn't bad - especially with $8 pellets.

I shot slightly worse this evening. 197 14X. Still nice for 4 cent pellets.

Jim - nice scoring with your new pellets.

I am suspicious about your target backing, looking at your holes. If you don’t use good backing, that may be the reason for the tears. See below.

Jim

I know you like H&N pellets, but while you are experimenting with 18g and 21g pellets, I am getting good accuracy with my 30Y Target Challenge cards with JTS 22.07g, AEA 21.9g and JSB 20.83g Lights.

They are more expensive, but it can’t hurt to order a tin of each possibly, and see if your guns like them. You might have to bump up your HS to increase velocity to get good results.

Tommy,

I have not tried any of the pellets you mention but I did try 18 grain and 25.4 grain JSBs and they were not close to the accuracy I get with the H&N.

I cannot increase the velocity significantly because of the hammer spring. It is close to max'd out. I'd like to at least try the H&N pellets at 880 fps but I cannot get there. I am messing with a reduced size poppet in my 25 caliber but I have not gotten it to increase velocity. I did not check the stem protrusion back towards the hammer, however, and that might get it working. If I ever get it working on the 25 maybe I will try it on the 22. But I am pretty happy with my low 30 fpe 22 that occasionally will give me a 200. Air capacity is also limited and with it's current tune my P35-22 will give me a target even if the bottle will only give me a 3200 psi fill or so with a few sighters but if I increase power I might tight on shooting targets on one fill when the bottle gets low. But for me seeing what I can do is just part of the fun.
