Is it okay to fire my FX Wildcat without a pellet while adjusting the trigger? Or am I damaging the gun because there is no pellet creating some back pressure?

I just loosely hold the cocking lever open with one hand as I test the trigger with the other. I catch the cocking lever as the trigger releases the hammer so the bolt doesn't fly forward. With the gun upside-down in a gun vice it's easy to make adjustments while testing the trigger.
