Holy Grail for HFT ?

You will have to stay tuned to this thread for more info...
Yesterday, I mounted a Nightforce NX8 4-32x50 F2 SFP with the MIL-CF2 reticle on my recently reacquired Steyr HFT Hunting Challenger.
During initial site in, i was amazed at the clarity at 10 yards so much so that i moved my point of focus out to 55 yards and the definition on the faceplate of my target, even at 16X in the afternoon light, was better than any other scope i have owned to date; and i own too many.
Maybe my eyes were just rested or....just maybe...

But how is the definition between yardages? That is the real question. I do not think the Nightforce line is set up for the definition we need at the various distances for HFT.
Actually it ranges quite nicely.... and very repeatable
red or green illumination is also a nice option
Give me a couple of weeks and i'll show you some pics on the spread of the 6" wheel and show what the finished dope sheet looks like.

NF specs list the parallax at 11 yards but it def. goes to 10 as i've sampled at least 4 NF scopes now. I don't think the compact version i tried of the NX8 ranged as well - seemed almost too compact.

Cons or biggest two draw backs to a NF scope are:
#1 cost
#2 weight

can't complain about not having enough reference points
You are correct, esp considering it is my #1 reason to whine about scopes...
Full disclosure, it will be interesting to see what the actual dope chart looks like when completed in the next few weeks.
End game requires the dope make sense and not create "senior" moments... ;)

I hate it when work interferes with my airgun time.

In regards to reference points, in my early days of Hunter field target, back in the 12x max mag days I was able to pull off more than a couple wins with a 4-12 Vortex Crossfire, with their BDC reticle. I had 3 horizontal reference points below the cross hairs!!! It was a game of holding roughly 3/4 or 1/2 or etc, between those VERY sparse marks. But it worked. One of the guys looked through that scope at the end of a match once and his response was shock...something along the lines of "how in the hell?!??"

I was too blindly confident to let the equipment deficiencies trip me up. Lol.

Imho for what those scopes cost they damn well BETTER be brighter & clearer than most others! Glad I only hunt. Can't afford to be a competition shooter in so many ways.
You don’t need to spend much money on a scope to compete, a good Athlon or Hawke will work nicely…. I only have pricey Airgun stuff because I’ve been very frugal for 60 years 😉 AND I’m spending my kids entire inheritance 🤣

It has been 11 years since I was very competitive in FT.
I shoot 50%…period.
Just aim and shoot.
No data.
You know?
Like when you are hunting!
i only hunt metal plates with holes in them that fall down when i shoot in the hole
kinda feel sorry for the critters getting only 50% of an ethical hit... ouch.

warning .... ffp reticle may appear thinner at 16X but if your shooting open or unlimited it doesn't matter.
Yeah I dont like an FFP for FT myself, i like a thin reticle. I was an only FFP person for years until I got until FT more. For hunter and open i still prefer SFP and the high mag scopes are all SFP anyway. Just personal preference.
I shot at 16x for hunter offhand and seated and 45x for open, offhand and seated so I have no benefit to an FFP anyway and if I wanted to turn my power down I would just get the dope for it on say s30x but im good at 45x for now. Still learning but liking it.
I think I have converted almost all of my HFT scopes to SFP. They stay at 16x always so all work is done there. Been pretty happy with it.
