Huben Huben GK1 (Full Review) Semi-Auto PCP Pistol

Is it worth ordering the European “regulated” version, or will this take away a significant amount of its power?
The pistol performs so well over such a huge spectrum without the regulator so I would say no,.....but then again I'm really biased on the subject and not interested in any gun that is regulated, I just prefer less things to possibly go wrong with my gun.

I will buy a Huben Pup/rifle if one day they come out with a non regulated version, for now I stick to the pistols and will turn one into a Mini-Carbine.

I feel people lately have been conditioned to think regulators are necessary but there's plenty data out there that shows unregulated guns performing excellent.

To that point, the stock regs in the K1 rifle are, in my opinion, pretty bad, often creeping 30bar overnight. However, the hammerless system buffers their inconsistency, acting like a backup regulator by modulating the closure of the valve in accordance with the projectile leaving the barrel. All PCPs do this to some extent but the Huben system has a much more aggressive effect. This allows the pistol to shoot very consistent strings even with no reg.

Moreover, the power limit of a regulated gun is dictated by set pressure and plenum volume. The standard GK1 can achieve 80fpe+ because it is operating (at full fill) with a 350bar charge without the restriction of a plenum. Another way to look at it is that the whole air tank serves as the plenum. When the shot is taken with 350bar, high pressure can be maintained behind the projectile by the (relatively large) tank volume until the valve closes. With a reg, the max pressure is likely limited to 200bar, maybe less. In addition, having a small plenum means that the 200bar initial pressure is rapidly depleted before the shot cycle ends. So there’s a compounding loss of power with a reg. Now take a look at a picture of the regulated GK1. The plenum is tiny, relative to the whole air tube. My guess is that it will struggle to get more than 30fpe. That’s based on extrapolation of data from experiments investigating the effect of plenum volume in an Mrod. I could be wrong. The GK1 has surprised us all in many ways, but even the seller acknowledges that the regged version is compromised:

“the GK1, originally for practical purposes, is an unregulated airgun. This also helps to bring it to unheard of power levels, at its extremes it even approaches the K1’s performance. And, for an unregulated airgun, its consistency is very good.”

Strangely, they then go on to state that “This regulated version, just like the unregulated one, is also adjustable, meaning you can go from very high power levels to very low ones, by using both the regulator and the power wheel.”

This is really quite inconsistent and you can’t have your cake and eat it, in this sense. At best, you might be able to adjust the reg so high as to put it into bypass, or (preferentially) just temporarily remove it (?), but as far as I can tell, just adjusting it mandates degassing and taking the tube apart. For the sake of argument, let’s transpose what they’re saying in the first part of the blurb: The K1 rifle is limited in power to a level similar to the unregged GK1, precisely because it uses a regulator. Also note that the plenum in the K1 is much larger than the one I see in the pictures of this regulated GK1…

Now, I actually use my 22 almost all the time at a relatively low power, shooting GTOs at 900fps for 20fpe. However, I still wouldn’t bet on the regged GK1 keeping up with my needs. I’d have to see some numbers and a really stunning ES to convince me to get one. Notably, those aren’t presented alongside the inconsistent claims. More importantly, the unregged GK1 that I have already shoots more than a whole mag of GTOs with an ES<10. Who out there can shoot a pistol so well that they would notice the benefit from a reduction in ES of <10? The only thing I could gain is a handful of more consistent shots above 280bar. Since I fill from a tank that operates (when freshly filled) at a max of 290-300bar, thats pointless. Even if I had a 350bar fill source, the juice wouldn’t be worth the squeeze because I’d have to be using a compressor, which is inherently much slower than a tank.

Just another long winded 2c rant, so here’s my TLDR for the younger crowd: Rather than spending $2K on a castrated GK1, just set you calendar back 5 years and pick up an Ataman AP16, BRK Atomic XR pistol or a Weihrauch HW44. There’s probably a lot of GK1 owners selling those right now.

I have owned unregulated PCP's since 1989. And regulated one's since they came out, Mid 2000's maybe? They both do a good job imo!
However, I agree with Nomadic Pirate's last statement that many people think it's a necessity, I don't. I also agree less to go wrong, is a good thing. I still own and enjoy both types though.
Have fun

Does anyone know what this specific differences/improvements are for this new “Fourth Run” version (see photo) of the GK1 ?! I just finally got my GK1 (V3) set up, and now they are putting out a new one AGAIN? The Gun has been great a few weeks I’ve had it, but I just can’t shake the feeling/belief that I purchased a prototype. Again, I do like the gun, but this honestly seems quite irresponsible/unprofessional of Huben… in my humble opinion. One would hope that, if a company were to release a product in this bizarre staggered fashion, that they would at least make customers aware of the fact that they are still fine-tuning the product. I might honestly feel better if the newer versions were more expensive lol, that way I wouldn’t feel as duped.

IMO, Huben would be smart in the long run if they offered some kind of trade-in options, as this seems quite unfair to the “loyal” customers who purchased their various prototypes for the same price as their final product. It would be great if companies who are Huben suppliers push for such an action, or at least some sort of explanation. Again, I really do like my GK1 (V3) but I wish I was given all the facts before purchasing (what is now clearly) a prototype at full price. I 100% would’ve waited a few months if I knew Huben was still tweaking the product - but unfortunately, my supplier told me that the V3 was the “final version”. I cannot speak for anyone else, but this leaves a sour taste in my mouth

looks like just cosmetics, relax

vents in the shroud and black tube ( good move ) ......looks like the mag lever is back to the V1 style ( also good move )

Also we did not get prototypes, we got production guns so that in itself is incorrect from you.
Don't care for the vents unless they're functional. The stealth guage and safety are a plus however having loved a Career 707 for over two decades I'm not terribly concerned about the V3's slightly gaudy bling. ;-)

Wouldn’t matter to me if my version 3 was superseded 5 times……I like what I have that much 😉
It is indeed a wonderful creation, and I LOVE shooting mine (daily). I just wish I was told the correct information when I asked 🫤. I want to be able to trust that I'm getting accurate information from any company who I’m paying to supply goods/services of any kind.
You’re right though - I do still REALLY like the GK1 (V3) and have had lots of fun with it thus far… I guess I should probably just take the win lol

Is there a list of the changes they made (V1-V2-V3)?

What is the purpose of vents in a non-functional shroud? Seems like a functioning shroud would've been a better change
It’s to cool the barrel when you shoot too fast😉

A shroud is just that, it shrouds the barrel. It has no other functions unless the functions are purposely built into it such as venting the muzzle of the barrel into it so as to quite the report.
