FX DRS 500mm .22 The Back_Roads Experience​

Well been one heck of a morning, had to ditch work to sign for this thing, first knock on the door gave me a religious experience I was not expecting on a Monday

Then wat seemed like many hours later probably because it was, LOL, the Fed Man made his long awaited appetence

Within minutes I had the outer box opened and was prying open the FX package, Ouch! Paper cut watch for sharp edges

Take picture or it didn't happen, post it on GTA, run back down read instructions on how the mag works, loaded one up, oh no optics. Find the scope and mounts I had in mind, insert mag slip on weaver adapter, just clears the mag Yes!

Mounted the scope and get to sight in3 shots got me dead center with Norma 17.9gr. Ran a mag through and when satisfied with accuracy set up the crony, tag said 900 fps with 18 gr I am getting 900- 915 with the Normas, so close, more shots to see if regulator is working, will do a final reg test with weight sorted pellets.

Trigger perfect, side lever buttery smooth when no pellets in the chamber, and not so bad when loading a pellet either.
On the other hand this thing is loud with the tune but still sounds efficient, I added a Rocker LDC to the end and that made it quiet enough for the basement test, but a barrel tube sized chubby would be nice

Now not to sound like I am instant FX fanboy, I have $300 or under rifles that will give this FX a run for the $, my DAR gen3 .22 will be going head to head with the DRS I bet it will be close.

PS When I took my Crosman 362 off the rest I could not help but notice the Unscoped FX DRS is lighter than the lightly scoped 362.

Who ever makes the mag forgot the little nub on the wheel that is on all my other FX mags. This little nub sticking up is caught with your thumb and helps spin the wheel to where the number one pellet aligns with the exit hole and you drop the first pellet to lock the wheel. Without this nub you have to dig your thumb into the wheel holes to get it to spin which is a lot harder . My other mags also have the caliber designation under that nub. It is not on the DRS mag. They also have tightened the fitment by adding a second little Dee Ring which they did on the new Crowns being shipped. This has to be an oversight on the part of FX or the maker of the magazines for FX. This needs to be corrected immediately and in my opinion we who have received these magazines should be given the corrected magazine once they are available. What say?

My first thought was someone needs to 3D print a mag winder for these LOL

It might just be coincidence but according to chairgun your talking a difference of .007 seconds. 910fps is .140 seconds and 860fps is .147 seconds with 25.4gr. 910fps with 15.9gr is .145 seconds. So only .002 between your 860fps 25.4gr and 910fps 15.9gr. No way that makes that much difference. I've killed thousands of birds and even at 640fps 14gr tuned .22s have no problem with birds jumping the gun at 40yds. I'm not sure what the problem is but there not jumping the gun with only .002 seconds more time.

Yes I would agree with what you’re saying But my eyes are seeing different. It’s like deer jumping the string on a recurve vs. not so much with a compound bow. That’s a couple hundred feet per second difference too At 40 yards Or less. Now the animals are hearing the shot and react to that. A cowbird is just a little bigger than a sparrow so the kill zone is like the size of a quarter. These cowbirds jump at the sound so they do have a little head start and don’t have to move but 1/2” to be out of the kill zone as well just like a deer which has a much larger kill zone and they can drop 8 to 10” before an arrow gets to them at 200 fps. I filmed a blind hunt in South Africa where a friend tried to shoot a nyala antelope on a food plot at 30 yards. He had a 60 pound pull recurve bow. 4 times in a row (different days) the antelope jumped the string as they say. We played back the video and it was amazing how far it dropped before the arrow got there. Our guide said even with compound bows the animals are so wired to sudden noises that a good vital hit is hard to get. I think I have been shooting at the same birds over the feeder so much they are anticipating the shot. I have a DFL Ronin moderator but I don’t think a quieter moderator would help any.

I wound up drilling a small hole where the nub would have been and cut a piece of wire that I super glued in place. Much better now. I use speed loaders on my magazines so I could use one for this new mag as well. But for hunting just having an extra mag in your pocket would be enough.

My stock is at the dipper, so I worked on these two things today. I hope the gauge fits in the stock without modification. I should have waited to get the gauge before taking the stock to the dipper. I hope the gauge doesn't leak; it indexed correctly before it was very snug, I knew I could not go another full turn. I will see. They have a few different seals in the box. I just utilized the original. Thought I would make a metal butt plate in place of the rubber one. If it looks right on the rifle. :)

Thanks FX Airguns, can you tell us when the accessories for the DRS will be in the USA ? Slug power kit and the picatinny scope rail are what I am interested in?

Started cutting the aluminum Picatinny rail. Started out with cutting a short length of the dovetail to dial in the fit before cutting the full length rail material.

Another day on the stock in letting. Have the barrel and action fully inletted. this is the easiest rifle I have ever inletted. All the lines are straight. Did the whole thing on my vertical mill. . Now to get out the grinder and remove what I don’t want. At least I have the GRS stock in hand for a go by. This piece of maple is soft so not as heavy as hard maple. It weighs 4 pounds 14 ounces versus 1 pound 10 ounces on the FX synthetic stock. I’m estimating taking another pound off the maple stock by the time I’m done. I’m going to experiment with adding weight (lead) in the forearm under the barrel to give it a little more forward weight distribution for off hand shooting. I’m leaving extra wood about 1/4” below the bottom of the plentum in case FX or after market makes a middle size plentum . This way it will look less out of balance. I could have left the bottom solid wood if I were to just use the existing plentum. I’m really liking the look of this DRS with a wood stock. I’m already considering a .177 500mm and stock it with some figured Walnut. I’ll show the finished shaped stock next week. Going to NC tomorrow through the weekend for a Sporting Clays shoot.

Mine did nearly the same thing today. But I thought it was because it was the first time, I shot it since I degassed and installed new gauge. I am gtoint to see what it does tomorrow.

I also degassed it and adjusted the regulator. It was set at 136 BAR, I dropped it to 110 BAR and backed off the Hammer spring adjuster a full turn and a half. I'm still getting really low first 3-4 shot velocity, but after that it's averaging around 930FPS with 16 grain pellets.

1. 835 FPS, 24.8 FT Lbs
2. 902 FPS, 28.9 FT Lbs
3. 923 FPS, 30.3 FT Lbs
4. 932 FPS, 30.9 FT Lbs
5. 930 FPS, 30.8 FT Lbs

Mine did nearly the same thing today. First 4 shots were slow, then 910 consistent string. . I thought it might have been that was the first time i shot it since i degassed. I will try again tomorrow. I don't have a stock, so I cant shoot for accuracy.
