Resources beginner in BR 50, help, tips

Hello, my name is Axel and I have recently become the happy owner of a Taipan Veteran 2.

I bought this rifle to participate in 50, 75 and 100 yard BR events. I have not had very good results for two reasons:

I still don't know the best pellet or slugs for this rifle.

The other reason is that I don't have much idea of reading the wind with the flags.

Any opinion will be well received.

Thank you.

Never practice or shoot a match without flags. You can figure it out. It's really pretty simple. Hold the opposite way the flags point. Try to get them all in one direction or figure out which one is telling the truth. Pick a condition and try to stick to it if possible during s match. If there is a time limit a timer can be as valuable as flags. You paid for x number of minutes, use them. If they say fire and your condition is there, don't wait, start firing. Most imporyant....Never practice without them. Wasting your time. Have fun.

Jeff is right. Also search "wind" in the search bar. Lots of help there.
There are many 'real' benchrest internet sites found all over the world. But not many air rifle. But there is a lot to learn from other disciplines, such as 22RF at 50 yards.

What caliber is your rifle and what is the barrel length? Vets are notorious accurate rifles with pellets. I never had any success shooting slugs with the ones I owned. If its a .22 then I suggest JSB, FX or AA 18s or 25.4 MRD's as a starting point. Those pellets always shot well in mine.

Oh and another +2 on using flags!!!
Yes, I think I forgot to mention the caliber. 22 and 500 mm barrel, I was already testing before moving the hammer spring and I was shooting the 18 pellets at around 980 fps, so I reduced the tension until it was around 880 speed with 18.

Hi Axel, welcome to benchrest - be prepared for the ultimate rollercoaster. Here's my tip for learning flags/wind. Make sure you've got say 4 flags at 50yd. Start by waiting for a condition where the flags are for the most part going the same way and the same height (ie 90/45 degrees etc). Aim for the center dot then see where you end up. If the condition stays the same (or wait for the that condition to come back) change your poa to as far over as you need to to anticipate the shot moving the same direction and distance and that's your new poa. Don't think about scoring - just practice the conditions - there's a lot of them and the more conditions you can get comfortable with the better your scores. Hope that made sense. It's a lot to remember so just go out and buy a case of Prevagen and you'll do fine. Bob
