FX FX Typhoon loosing power

Somebody asked me to help him with his Typhoon that lost power. I did not see the rifle yet and prepare to replace some O-rings.

What is the most common reason for the Typhoon to loose power? It is a 5.5mm full power rifle. The owner is not technical minded and cannot tell me anything but the loss of power. He bought the rifle new some years back and he said it is factory standard, he just shoot it and did not modify or tried to adjust / alter it in any way. It is a 5.5mm full power rifle.

Go to fx airguns, click support, click drawings (diagrams), click Typhoon for diagram & parts. They're uncommon nowadays so don't know what "commonly" happens to them but drawings & parts list should help. They're OLD so seals somewhere are probably shot.

Thanks, I already downloaded the exploded-view drawing and part list before posting here. I think you are right, it will be O-rings that are old.

Just for information.

I did get the rifle in question in hand and found that it leaks at a high rate, so much that after filling it to 200 bar, each consecutive shot lost about 30 fps and within 5 shots it went from 916 fps to less than 750 fps. After waiting a few minutes the next shot was less than 400 fps. There is no gauge on the rifle to see what the pressure is.

I did open the rifle and is was not a problem with any O-ring. I found that the valve itself was leaking, not any O-ring on the valve unit. I cannot see damage on the teflon ? valve seal (or whatever material it is) or the valve seat. It is difficult to see detail on the valve seat as it is, what looks like stainless steel, bushing pressed inside the bronze valve body. I don't know if it is leaking around the bushing / valve seat or at the seal itself.

I will contact our local FX dealer, Patriot and if they cannot help, I will contact FX Sweden. Since it is an old PCP I doubt if they will have spares.

I would not be surprised if FX Sweden has parts for the Typhoon
And their new USA service centers (UTAH & Cape Fear) can get them.
You can also find parts at Bagnall & Kirkwood in the UK

I am in SA and today I did source and ordered a new valve pin from Patriot, the SA agents for FX. I think it is the teflon seal in the valve pin that is worn but still smooth, the rifle is about the age of a dinosaur. The brass valve body has a stainless steel valve seat and I doubt that will be the problem but if I find that it must be replaced as well, they will have to order it from Sweden. The valve pin cost R183, that is the equivalent of about $10 US, I thought it will be more.

That's very good news.
And much less expensive than B&K
I'd be curious to know what the turnaround time is on receiving it from Patriot/FXSweden

Since I had the rifle open I replaces all O-rings and silicon oiled.
No transfer tube O-rings, single block receiver.
One of the first things I did was to clean hammer and bore.

With the valve body on the air tube I held it under water. The only place it leaked air was at the transfer holes as indicated in the picture, and a lot of it. As can be seen on the tube, this rifle is almost 22 years old.

I received the valve pin this morning and installed it. At first it wat sill leaking but taped the pin lightly with a spanner to let air out, about 20 times. The seal then settles on the valve seat and now there is ZERO leaks. I put the rifle together, zeroed the scope and then adjust for best group with the pellets the owner gave with it, H&N 14.66gr. Best groups was around 900fps from 185 bar to 115 bar, unregulated. Now there is one happy Typhoon owner.

Good to hear the problem is solved and the T-12 shoots nicely.
Most likely one of the reasons FX earned the reputation for producing accurate guns early on.
With no need to modify the tune because they did their homework in that regard too.
And I am not an FX junkie

This valve pin actually came from Patriot in SA. The same company distributing the Javelin slugs.
If I had to order the valve body, that would come from Sweden and would take much longer.

I left it filled to 185 bar for more that 6 hours and it held all the pressure.

I zeroed the scope on 20 meter as per the request of the owner. It has a 4x fixed scope with a 30-30 duplex reticle on it. I then took it out further and could not see well as is was a cloudy day, late afternoon. At 50 meter, 5 shot 20mm group, right where I aimed. At 75 meter held 25mm from top of the 200x200mm plate and hit about 25mm from the bottom. 5 Shot 25mm group with 4 in 15mm. At 100 meter it is under trees and I could really not see much and did not know where to hold over so I just guessed. First shot I could hear the ping but did not see where it hit, so I just kept shooting, 5 shots, 5 hits. About a 50mm group from centre and down. It can be better if I have a 12x scope on it but tomorrow it is going back and I don't want to mess around further.

Not bad for a more than 20 year old rifle and 4x scope, presumably just as old. What I like about it, is that it has a better barrel on it, could be a little thicker. Why don't they make all FX rifles like that?
