DIY gun vise, WIP

Been without a gun vise for a while, and have had a bunch of scraps/salvaged wood from broken furniture hanging around. Still need to incorporate an organizer tray for tools and parts. Knock down some sharp edges, finish gluing on the leather pads etc. It's together enough for proof of concept to check my dimensions work. Holds the rifle upright and very secure. Should make cleaning, mounting scopes, and other gun chores a breeze.

1 last pic in case anyone is wondering the best way to void a lifetime warranty on a new tool....

I know there has to be a few of you out there that have made these. At least 1 guy I saw selling them in the classified section, his ad may have been an inspiration to put something together. While our designs are not the same, a good idea is a good idea and I'm glad I came across his work. If you have pics of your own designs I would love to see them.

I have been playing with wood thread cutters for a while . one inch and 1/2 inch dowel rods . playing with various woods and oil to try to overcome chipping in the threads. My local gun shop has one and it is a beauty .
Think the answer is to vari the cut shallow at first and progress deeper in stages.

Very nice. I agree on secure holding for mounting and such.
Thank you!

The 1 I saw on here in the classifieds uses wood threads, I do like the look. I chopped up a woodworking handscrew clamp for the vise. Allows the jaw to pivot to the angle of the stock for those with a cheek piece. Not as elegant, but functionality is on point.

I've done a bit of thread cutting in wood dowels. Birch does not work well. There's a tropical wood called Ramie that cuts beautifully and some lumber store carry dowels made from it. I've dipped the ends of the dowel in melted paraffin wax and that seems to reduce tear out. I got my tap and die from Woodcraft If I remember right.

Nicely done! I may borrow some of your ideas to augment my setup. I've been using a couple of wood-carving vises from Japan Woodworker. They were pretty inexpensive when I bought them. They're still not horrible, but they're no longer "cheap".

Borrow away. If you want any measurements etc let me know. Love to see your new set up when you're done!
