Hello from highly restricted California!

Newbie here, just acquired my first 'real' airgun, an AirForce Texan SS .457! Suddenly I find myself freshly addicted to this this new genre of shooting!

Picked it up from a pawn shop, it was going a little stale there and they were having a sale... sooooo.... it came home with me! She's a 2021 ym, 3k PSI Al tank model with a Hawke Airmax 30WA SFP 4-16 scope. I still need to acquire a filling setup, but was able to get two rounds to confirm function was good, punched within 1/2" @50yds with an awkward rest, handheld, half knelling and half squatting - I'd say it has high hopes of being very much a tack-driver!

My previous airgun is a Benjamin Regal NP break-barrel .22. It has been nice, but rather pedestrian in the wow-factor department. I am already learning that there is much to be done in tuning for both of these pellet-pushers, will be watching for a 4500 tank/valve for the Texan, and just now trying to learn what can be done for the Benny.

I feel both guns could use some trigger work, but I would really like to get more info on the internals and how to best improve the basics. First need is good data! Is there an armorer's manual or other servicing manual for the Texan? Called AirForce - they were AWESOME with their support, but limited in that no paperwork other than owner's manuals are available, and that is just too superficial for what I need to do.

Looking forward to getting my head filled - not with HP air.... jus' sayin'! :ROFLMAO:

Welcome to AGN! Great place for knowledge. Nice rifle, they can really chuck some lead! I suggest looking into a fill source ASAP. The rifle is going to require a lot air per shot. Maybe two tanks and a dive shop to start out with. The good news is compressors have really come down on price in the last year.

NSA makes some nice slugs, so does Mr. Hollowpoint.

Slightly O.T., but is California restrictive with respect to airguns?

Congrats on the new rifle!

Yes and no.
Obtaining an air rifle is no big deal. No background checks no waiting. Felons welcome!
Hunting with air rifles is another story. There is unclear designation as to what is allowed and what is not in some areas. Certain upland game birds, and small game mammals is specifically allowed. Wild turkey has certain restrictions - which really are not restrictions at all, it just has to be bigger than .177, however, coyote raccoon are not clearly defined as to legality of take with air rifles.

Currently, the California nonlead projectile laws are not applicable to airguns, but I am betting that will change.

I've reached out to the overlords to get clarification on these issues.

As restrictive as California is regarding firearms, our state is friendly toward air guns. When I first got into air guns seriously about 15 years ago California was really ahead of most others regarding what we were legally allowed to hunt with our air rifles.

Well, it seems they've lost momentum on some leniencies, at least in regard to the take of large game animals with big-bore airguns.

Don't give them any ideas.

Don't give them any ideas.
They don't need them. The ideas are out there, and implemented in some areas (where the political cost of doing so was next to nil). I'm sure airguns are on the radar everywhere, but at least for the time being we're too niche for most folks to worry about.

Just until some numbnuts does something really stupid and it'll either be in CA or NY. Oh and to the OP, welcome to the Rabbit Hole® also behind enemy lines. Enjoy your trip, it's a great place here, referring to AGN.

Air Gunning in CALIFORNIA is alive and well ... and as a STATE not restrictive what so ever !!! Now within the larger cities and there "City Limits" those restrictions differ little from any other incorporated cities threw out this country.

If you really dislike California ? We encourage those feeling this way to leave. Thank you very much :cautious:
