Chipmunks - pest or protected?

Our chipmunks dug out an underground tunnel system during drought years. It turned out they did that in the flow path of rain water, which we get plenty now. Their construction work was washing out and recently collapsed, and we need to level it using a lot of soil. They also leave dozens of holes that trap my kids. They are very sassy, if not downright aggressive, too.

Heck, they keep finding ways into my basement, where they eat poisoned mice bite and die. I can help them to die in a more humane way.

It's actually even worse than that. Because of the safe no dog haven we get a lot of rabbits, which attract coyotes, who leave the chewed off rabbit heads and intestines behind on the flower beds. Not talking about the deers terrorizing the neighborhood and occasional black bears.

You live in a good place. My wife gets mad when the bears run off with the feeds and poles. One pole we never did find. Neighbor down the road said he saw the bear run up in the woods with the pole in his both and the feeder swaying on the end. Neighbor found the feeder 2 years later but pole has never been found. I tell her the bears were her first.

Those rats in drag get blasted here. Aside from tunneling and messing up water flow as the previous poster mentioned, any building here that is up on blocks is constantly in danger of having the foundation compromised, same as with moles. I've taken them with airguns, a smoothbore .22 with rat shot, slingshot and even a blowgun.

I'm on the coast of BC, so we don't see any chipmunks around here.

Pests around here tend to be squirrels, raccoons, rats, mice, lots of birds of prey (owls, eagles, hawks, falcons, ravens) then on the more rare side there's ocean otters, mink, pine martens, weasels, woodpeckers (although I've never had a problem with them but they have burrowed into my neighbourh's house), rabbits, etc.

I liked seeing the little buggers until they undermined the corner of my drive.
Same here. I enjoyed watching them until they dug too many holes in my yard. I shoot them in my backyard with airguns. They are mostly close to the house in the front and they are very alert. I have no opportunity to shoot in the front yard. A big mouse trap is used. The most I got was 10 in a week with the trap! Shooting is not as productive but more fun. They are very hard to shoot for their agility.
