Photo Thread: Quarry and the Airgun that Took It

Benjamin M357 topped w/Vector Continental 5-30x56mm FFP shooting NSA 110 grain hollow-point dish-base slugs took down this young spike. Shot was 55-60 yards out from a kneeling position, no shooting rest used. Body braced against an open door. Yep I shot from inside of the house.

Stopped him with a male whitetail vocalization and shot while he was quartering towards me. Complete passthrough, broke a rib and kept on trucking out of the other side. There was no blood trail (it was raining around sunset anyhow). For more details and photos on this hunt click the link below.

Fantastic, well done.

Okay so if I'm following your pics and descriptions correctly, you've taken wild pigs with .177 and .22 and .25? I'd like to ask, what distances were the shots for each? Also, I'm assuming you were using slugs? Do you know what FT/LBs you were getting with each? This is fascinating because I've been pondering getting a .30 or .357 but if a .25 can do the job just as affectively, I may decide to go that route. Thanks for any guidance you can give.

@BlkAirRiflemanOfGA Manny has been hog hunting with small bores for yearsss. If you look him up on AGN, you will see older posts under an old handle “AirArcher66.” He has several videos posted on YouTube and a gate on the GTA forum (Manny’s Corner). He has discussed plenty of details that you’re asking about in several threads. Check him out. Here’s one of those threads.

Short distance is my game 8 to 30 pretty much covers it, small bores are always brain shots so slugs aren't what I use, always pellets.

That's awesome to know. I'll definitely check him out and see what techniques he uses and his distances and pellet/slug choices for wild hogs. Thanks!!!

Okay great that's good to hear. I know getting up that close to hogs here is a bit tricky with wind and them smelling you. But, I guess in a blind situation or sitting somewhere still until they cross my face. Awesome. I appreciate the insight. Did you find either caliber to be more effective than the other or all about the same results and humane kills?

Don't even mention shifting winds, over here down into the valley is a constant.

To be honest with you when you talk about small bore brain shots both .22 and .25 are extremely effective as long as you have enough juice you choose the right pellet and make the perfect shot ( I used to have a great thread on GTA for Hog shot placement but when I didn't renew my Photobucket membership unfortunately I lost all the pictures )

Few photos for you to hopefully enjoy of hunting with a sub 12ftlb air rifle here in the Yorkshire Dales. The balance of modest power Vs the animals natural defenses makes for great sport. Every kill is a head shot.

Lovely area to shoot at Barn!! I to enjoy hunting with a 12ftlb from time to time. While it is fun to smack a rabbit from 100+ yards with a blistering fast slug, there is a level of satisfaction from stalking in close and placing a precision shot.
It's not a bad place to live when the weathers nice. Tedious when the wind blows and it blows a lot!!
Love stalking rabbits though my old bones are starting to complain when I start crawling about. 😀

Shot at 35yds or thereabouts and 30ft up - when you take the shot expecting to miss and the Sniper XR says, "I got you!"
Missed the first shot because I tried to get him on the run. At that point he ran up the tree, like way up the tree. Then I saw his head poke over the crook of the tree. I took aim, pulled the trigger and he just slumped over. And hung there and hung there. I thought I lost him to the notch in the tree so I went to get my camera to take a picture of him hanging in the tree. By the time I got back he had already fallen to the ground.
