Eating my words here... FX Panthera thoughts

Scroll to the end for a TLDR

I have been anti FX because even though it is genius , their marketing drives me up the wall, I just call it propaganda now lmao.

Now onto a little backstory

.... March 18th I went to NEAG to buy a bulldog Taurus from John, always wanted one but didn't want to spend the coin on a rifle with little to no knowledge documented about it here on the nation, but being able to handle it and having a retailer to fall back on changed my mind about not wanting to "pull the trigger". That same day I grabbed another Huben in .22 and an Airacuda Max .25 (love both and my original huben in .25) . At the same time John asked me to shoot at the North East Airgun Classic for him and I said hell yes and he proceeded to sign me up and get everything rolling , not much prep time here especially since the only rifle I am familiar with at this point that I owned was my Huben .25 and its only allowed on the bench (no semi allowed for PRS).

My plan was Huben .25 on the bench, Taurus for the squatchbomb, now what to do about PRS? After shooting the Taurus for the first time it was very anemic , shooting 840fps off the first shot vs the 945 advertised, long story short the rifle went back to Veradium to be inspected and sorted on March 20th, speaking with Brian on the phone I decided at that time to place an order for a custom Artemis M16A (CF Bottle swap, trigger work, valve and hammer work, and a custom slug barrel with muzzle break) with the agreement it would be done in two weeks so that I could practice with it.

Fast forward to April 5th the Taurus came back, I took it out and shot it , again, same thing as the first time... I called John at New England Airgun, told him that I did not want it and I want to exchange it for something as time was running out with only 15 days till the competition. Now I am somewhat panicking as my PRS build was still not here and wasn't sure when it would be and my squatchbomb rifle is being returned.
I exchanged it for a wildcat bt compact 30 caliber thinking well, squatchbomb I have friends who said I could borrow their rifles but I need to practice prs with something so a .30 cal pellet rifle in bullpup tickled me as I am a bullpup guy and sportsman are only shooting out to 99 yards to ring steel not group on paper so it fit what I wanted. I take it home April 7th and boom, air leaking right past the valve seat, bring it to John Tuesday the 10th (10 days from comp) and he inspects it and confirms the same thing .... FX said they were overnighting parts wednesday, nothing.... come friday, still nothing. Also my Artemis was going to go out to me Friday NDA Saturday delivery unfinished just so I had something to shoot BUT it did not make it out in time so I told Brian at Veradium just keep it till its finished I will have to figure something out . Feeling anxious but still thinking about everything and feeling the pressure of the time crunch lead me to call John and say hey, I need something, pull that 600mm .22 panthera and 4 boxes of ZANS I will be by Tomorrow afternoon to pick it up, I will keep the wildcat as well ( I really am excited about this rifle , it feels AMAZING... more on that another time).

I picked the Panthera up this past saturday, tuned it out my back door, slapped my PRS Scope on it and waited till sunday to shoot it.

First impressions, it is not built like an Impact, dreamline, maverick, or wildcat ... it has an EXTREMELY solid feel, the cocking lever is smooth and robust, very robust. The rifle was quite uncomfortable for me at first as I am not used to shooting with a verticle grip or rifle with the scope so close to the barrel but I started to get used to it.... its also definitely not a hunting rifle for walk and stalkers, while it palms very easy , it definitely has some forward length to it. Its very purpose oriented

Consistent? I am completely chuffed with its consistency.... the most consistent rifle I own. Very easy to tune and none of the tuning components feel fragile.

I stupidly grabbed the .217 33gr zans not .218 and I was still getting 1.25" full mag groups at 100 yards. I feel with more time, the right ammo, and a better shooting table I could easily cut this in half. Laid out golfballs at 25, 40, 55, 68 , 77, 85 and 90 yards and it just pegged them all over the place.

The rifle is also very smooth when being shot, its quiet with 0db moderator (which looks great with my tank wrap), little to no movement from the rifle at this powerlevel.

Being pretty anti fx , it took everything in my will to buy this but I am actually glad I did, I had intent on selling it after this competition but I don't think I will anymore.

TLDR; don't hate the panthera, still hate fx marketing, no time for prep, forced me to buy, can't wait to have fun this week at the NAC

Hope everyone had a good weekend. I did.

Sweet experience, glad it's a shooter.. what reg pressure are you using to push those 33 Zan's?
I have it at 155-160 bar on the reg, its not violent at all, very smooth. I think pushing the .218 I wont have any blow by and the rifle will be a lot more efficient. Yesterday I felt I was wasting air shooting these .217

Looking like it’s worked out for you! Good luck at the match.
Allen Zasadney (airgun guru) just told me that he got to set up a Pantera for a customer. He said that it was the most fun he’s had with an airgun in years, he was shooting it out to 275 yards and hitting small rocks with it.
For him to say that really means something!

Wow. I'm exhausted just reading about your prep. Good luck! I am going to try to make it to just watch some of the events, the Squatchbomb looks fun.
Believe me, the past 3-4 weeks have been completely trying ... luckily my Huben surprisingly is dialed in really well so I haven't had to do MUCH prep with it, I am going with the soul purpose of having fun, however I can't have fun if I am not prepared.

I look forward to meeting you at the NE Airgun Classic - I‘ll be there too.

I signed up for Sportsman. I expect to come in last. This weekend I shot 100 yards for the 1st time. I don’t even know what the other events are, but I’m looking forward to meeting a bunch of fellow enthusiasts and learning a lot!

Best way to be man, I am not a competitor lol, I really like John at New England Airgun, hes been great, him and his wife are all about customer service I cannot say enough about them so when he asked me I had to oblige.

You will do better than last!!! its a mindset man!

Awesome, I've been back forth on 600 vs 700 and .22/.25. I have some slugs coming that if one stands out, could help me make up at least the caliber decision.

It'll come down to shot count for the 600 or 700--what type of shot count are you getting at that reg pressure?

A friend of mine is running a very close tune to me with the same exact rounds and rifle getting 1 and a half mags , so 27 shots, however hes shooting .218, shooting these .217 I am only getting 1 mags, I think with .218 I could back off my tune, and get more velocity and 1 and a half mags as well. The blow by is killing me... I think..

I've slowly learned to love my Panthera as well. Like it MUCH better with the dual bottle setup. Like the OP said, and I concur, It is without a doubt the most consistent rifle I own. 1.87fps standard deviation is about the norm with mine. Much smother and robust than my impacts and Wildcat BT. Easier to tune.
I'm interested to see where FX goes next with the valve system that is on the Panthera. I'm betting that when the Impact M4 comes out, it will have some similarities.

It totally impressed me, I wish the wildcat had the cocking lever setup the panthera has, the wildcat bt compact shoulders so damn nice , the cocking lever leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm fond of my AA airguns.
I'm fond of my Feinwerkbau airguns.
I'm fond of my FX airguns.
I'm fond of my Weihrauch airguns.

I'm not a fan boy to any brand but consider each airgun relative to that application I have for it and buy accordingly. Right now it's a 3-way tie with AA following close behind. :)

Respect to you! I noticed that you don't like FX marketing strategies but you didn't let that stop you from trying their product and admitting that it may be a "keeper".

Glad that you're having a good experience with your Panthera, wish you luck with it!

IMHO, I think that FX (and many others) make good airguns, they are also good at marketing them. I don't fault FX in either case, after all, any and every company tries to do the same thing. Some are just more successful than others. ;)

Cheers!

I can totally live with that. Now UPS just has to get here so I can put some slugs through their paces. I usually jump on the new product bandwagon right away, but taking my time with a decision on the Panthera.

Hmmm...sounds like a great sniper option. Optimized for high power and slugs but in a fairly long platform...and it sounds like the consistency is there. What is really appealing to me is the tight SD...my Taipan as much as I love it has a wider SD than I would like with the HUMA reg.

What I'm not a fan of though is the length. I'm primarily a pesting and hunting type of guy so the shorter and more compact a gun is the better.

My Taipan with a 700mm barrel and a 7" moderator is roughly the same length as the 500mm Panthera without a moderator.

It is not a walk and stalk rifle at all, at least not for me. I have the 600 and it is lengthy COMPARED TO WHAT I AM USED TO, but I not thing I could ever get used to walking around with this thing.

Agreed, I have the .22/700 and weight and length wise I wouldn't want to walk and stalk with it!

BUT the Panthera will probably be great for long range tree-rat hunting ;)

I have a spot in the oak woods where I can see 75-80 yards in every direction, just the place to sit with a chair, a thermos of coffee and a good book while I "hunt" squirrels. This sounds like fun to me, they'll never know what hit them LOL!

Besides, I'm to old to be chasing through the bush like I did when I first started hunting squirrels with a slingshot :)

Cheers!

See Centercut's post, "200 yard first shot accuracy" page 2 for our 284 yard experiment at a 2" target a couple days ago. Made ME change my mind about FX's claims re: Panthera. When the "hype" started I felt as you did.
When I held it I knew something was different over previous FX rifles, maybe they listened to peoples gripes? It is definitely a performer, the consistency shows it.
