The two biggest concerns I have with storing my guns is rust and theft. Therefore, I store them upright in a humidity controlled gun safe. When storing a springer and others upright some issues can occur. One of them is long term damage to the butt pad. A good example of this would be the famous HW55. Storing it upright will permanently damage the butt pad. Make what is called “dog ears”. This is when the outer portions of the pad hit the floor first and with the weight of the gun the pad actually deforms. This picture is an example of the pad undamaged. For soft and old, more vulnerable pads, I make a custom platform shaped to that certain pad. Then I use the hook side of Velcro and stick it to the bottom of the platform. When it hits the carpet in the safe it stays put. Each gun has its own spot. With a very old pad that I worry about even sitting on the pad itself, I place two 1/4 dowels in the platform that line up to the screw holes in the pad. Now the gun is sitting on the steel screws and the pad is at rest. I know many don’t use upright storage but here in the South with humidity at 100% it‘s a must.
