After you shoot them. Get you a stick and check the mouth for fangs. Then you will know for sure or not. Lol. 

Good shot. At first glance it looks like a cottonmouth. But the head is the giveaway. But I would have shot it as well. My wife and kids don’t know the difference and like you not taking the chance. Plus it’s just a snake and I’m sure they’re are plenty waiting to take it’s place.
