When I had one, I had good results from the 223 diameter. Cant remember the weight, but it seemed it was close to 40g. Killed a couple of coons out to 120 yards with it.

If you are going fx for first gun, go with a maverick or wildcat mk3. Shoot well out of the box and are fairly easy to tune.

From what you are describing, I would go with the Maverick. It is the simpler gun. Once you figure out the steps to tuning regulators, its simple. You can also change hammer weights easy to up or down power. I have both. The Impact is a smoother shooting gun in my opinion. But if you are...

The barrel may be pushed too far back. Take the barrel out and see if the mag fits. If it does, just push the barrel just far enough back where the mag will fit and then tighten it down. had to do this with the eaglevision mag on my Maverick. 

May want to look at the FX Maverick. You can put a bigger bottle om it. They are easy to tune. Could shoot a variety of ammo well. And you could change barrel length if you wanted. I started with a compact maverick. I changed it to the 600mm barrel and like it better.
