RAW moderator replacement?

Getting ready to order a RAW and I was wondering if any of you guys have replaced the stock moderator? The offset ones seem like they really don’t work too well. I know the newer ones are a little different. I saw that northern Airgunner added a ronin to the end of his, but I don’t want a monstrous tube on the front of my gun. I used an Emperor on the end of my Extreme Big Bore .308 for a couple of years and just got tired of a big extension on the barrel.

Thinking about power levels on a .22 or .25, something small like a tanto, koi, or tatsu should work ok. I don’t need it super quiet, just want to tame it some. I have a tatsu on my Impact .25 that is tuned at 80 FPE for slugs right now and it works fine.

What has worked out well for any of you guys that have made a switch?

The old Theoben Evolution with Vortex add on works extremely well for their size. Ask Martin if he can do one 4u.

Or AZ is THE BEST if you need it ABSOLUTELY MOUSEFART QUIET near silent but you out of your gun more than 6-12 months.

Or contact Stoti for Neil Clagues version not silent like AZ but its way quicker.

Second thought not the best idea to go with an AZ version because its too damn quiet makes you think you dryfiring the gun with zero air in it making it extremely dangerous IMHO. Plus you always paranoid the gun broken all the time thinking its got no power due to lack of sound when shot.

AncientSword, The new RAW HM1000LRT dose not come with the offset moderator any more. The new design is just over 2 inch in diameter and 15 inch long. For the 22 cal I was able to check the sound level of both the old offset design and new pop can design moderator with a db meter phone app and found both had the same amount loudness. Here is picture showing the new moderator apart nest to the rifle.

Hey guys,

Keep in mind the reason RAW's are loud is because they waste a lot of air and are inefficient machines. In .25 caliber and lower a Spring Stop Guide (SSG) takes about 50% of the bark away - by itself. Then any garden variety moderator can be used. The side benefit, which is huge ... is that you get between 50% and 75% more shots per fill.

The only SSG downside, is your velocity adjustment range is only about a 30 fps from any chosen tune.

Hence, in my gun which is tuned for about 920 fps, the adjustment range is from 895/950 fps. If a velocity outside this range is desired, another SSG with more/less hammer strike is required.

This is some excellent information for a relative newbie like me. Without any real information on SSGs, I am assuming that this is something which must be custom made, like by someone with access to a machine shop?

I know that one of the reasons I really like Daystates is that they seem to be tuned really well from the factory for efficient use of air, especially their electronically controlled models.

i dont think anybody understands why raw continues with these big moderators , if they would just have a threaded end of some sort , slip on with grub screws is fine , then we could choose our own moderator for our own needs , we could control the length and how loud we each would be ok with , i now have a huggett on mine, its very quiet , but what a ugly mess i still have to fix

My TM 1000 sits in a corner 3 feet away right now! I sold a few HM 1000s just to make space here.

I've dealt with Martin over the phone regarding earlier single shot TM or HM types which I had a collection of in .177, .20, .22.

These are older models with the Silver TM-1000 .177 single shot 200 BAR thing and carbon barrel shroud to eliminate noise from firing a pellet around 905 fps.

This had been about 15 years ago?

Not trying to bash anyone. Please forgive my ignorance. Anyone know why this known issue has not been addressed? Seems like this has been an issue for a long time (again, from my ignorant perspective....don't even own a PCP yet....still trying to figure out the best bench gun for me).

Hey "My87",

I'm no expert either, just know the SSG was designed by Bob Sterne, who frequents the GTA and other airgun forums. He's also written for Hard Air Magazine. A well made SSG can bring great efficiency to airgun platforms that aren't.

The RAW's Achilles Heel is that's is loud because of wasted air and the manufacturer has had a tough time quieting down the gun.

There are likely other ways to tune the gun to increase efficiency (sounds like AZ has the answer).

Do some research on the SSG and see what you can find.
