Skout .25 Skout Epoch

I think by this thread having over 5,000 views, you can see that I do like the .25 Skout Epoch that I won in a raffle at EBR 2023 very much, and that its accuracy is right there with any other high-end airgun on the market (Daystate, FX, RAW, etc.).
There is one MINOR issue that I feel could be fixed easily, and one issue that I would call MEDIUM that will need some engineering...

First, the minor issue. When cocking the gun, the cocking handle is not held back by either a ball detent or a magnet. Scott S. @Motorhead posted his solution to this and has done it on his Skout.

Second, the "medium" issue. The HP reg pressure varies with bottle pressure. In a conventional PCP with a knock open valve (not a balanced valve) tuned on the "knee", 150 to 200 psi (10 to 13 bar) isn't that big of a deal. However, the Skout uses a different kind of valve (spool valve?) that is very sensitive to plenum pressure.

So, shooting at 100Y BR yesterday at Rio, I filled my gun to 3700 to 3750 psi, and HP reg pressure was 1900+ psi at the start. As I shot, the bottle pressure of course decreased, and the HP reg (plenum) pressure dropped correspondingly. In this case from about 1925 to 1745 ish. What I saw was a gradual drop in POI as I shot a couple of magazines. Now, I shoot lots of sighters, so it was easy to compensate for this throughout the match. There is a decrease in speed of the pellet from around 965 to about 940 fps from 3700 to 2500 psi. I refilled at 2500 a couple of times but going down closer to 2000 psi would have resulted in a further pressure drop and lowering pellet speed.

Shooting like this in an EFT event could cause problems. Most EFT events are 40 shots, and the gun can give 40 shots from a single fill, but having the POI drop over the course of the match is unacceptable and "could" result in misses at the longer KZs in later stages. What I'll have to do is fill to 3600 ish and shoot to 2800 ish, then refill. Not a big deal, but just one more thing to think of while competing.

Some owners have added an inline Huma bottle reg to address this issue @stoti, but that's a band aid for the real issue. I'd like to see Skout upgrade the HP reg to fix this issue - they may already be working on it, I'm just not aware of it... Other than that issue, the gun is sold competition ready. Look at that target above in a previous post with the Daystate Rangemaster .25 Heavy pellets (right column). Those targets are competitive at any Pro level 100Y benchrest event.

I'll be shooting my Skout at the EFT GP even in Florida in two weeks and let you know how it does at that type of competition. I'll need to get the gun set up for that this coming weekend, since I haven't shot it at an EFT event and don't even have the correct dope for 20 to 100 yards... More to follow.

Pic one, shows attachment position of the 2 rare earth magnets. ( Shuttle arm not attached ) Pic two, cocking arm full back where the TWO magnet rest over one another which holds the probe retracted and cocking handle fully back.

I was able to get out for a couple quick outings Friday and then went out this afternoon in the cold to play around some more.

  • Friday was more shooting with 25gr at 50 yards. The wind was only around 3-5mph, but it wasn’t steady and I wasn’t as accurate as the first time out. Still good.
  • Friday was also the arrival of the Whisper. I ran out to shoot it, but there were no instructions with it for install. I had to guess. It was only a few shots just to quickly test sound. I checked in with Luke, and he quickly sent me an instructional video.
  • Today… try out the Whisper for real.
    • It was quieter with both 25 and 34. I can’t say how much, but it was quieter. These things don’t usually mean a lot to me where I shoot, but I wanted to try it anyway. Definitely quieter though.
    • I am going to try it out again another day when I have more time. I’m not sure how many of my erratic shots today were the whisper or just the tunes I was trying. I think it was the Whisper, because there were massive fliers that I have only had in the past with other rifles from clipping. (I just checked after writing this and there does seem to be some clipping on one baffle.) I took it off and went back to stock on the final tune and the fliers stopped.
  • 34gr tuning - Tuning was very easy. I never had to adjust the LP reg, as it moved with the HP reg.
    • I got all the way up to around 950, but they weren’t accurate (may have been the Whispwr because it was on until the end, but didn’t think about it until then).
    • I backed it back down to 922 and they looked good expect for random huge fliers. I removed the Whisper and it turned out they were shooting better than any other groups so far.
  • Original tune for shooting 25gr was around 1200/120 and it was very good.
  • Ending tune for 34gr right now is 1650/140. Avg 922, SD=12, ES=3.3 over 32 shots. It was consistent, no drop off, first shot was 919 and last was 923. 32 shots only because that is when I started and ended. Was not a full string and is it easily could have kept going. It was just getting dark.
I was able to get a pic rail on, but I had to go to the hardware store and get some longer screws. I didn’t have a set of screws long enough for this ARCA MLOK rail. I think I got 15mm screws. I know the 20mm were too long, and I picked up some 30mm so I could stack 2 weights on the back half of the ARCA MLOK rail.

None of my weights would fit on any of the upper MLOK rails. The shapes and bends didn’t allow it. I have seen other weights work, so it just depends on the size of yours.

I’ll report back when I can shoot again. I’ll test the Whisper again and hopefully get out to 100 yards.

The picture shows a bunch of random shots as I tuned and moved the scope around too. The circled groups are the final tune (squares 1/2” outside border).

Last practice session prior to the Florida EFT GP on Friday and Saturday. I put my 6-24x Athlon Midas TAC on the gun Friday and left the tune the same, 950 fps with the RangeMaster 33.95 grain pellets. I shot mostly target yesterday getting it zero’d and the dope perfect at 50 yard zero then checked 75 and 100 yards and it looked good.

Unfortunately right about the time I was ready for bucket and sticks practice the battery died. I estimate close to 500 - 600 shots between charges.

Today I took it out to verify my dope for EFT. Took 3 shots at 50 yards and just a bit high (1/4 inch), then dialed for 100Y and first shot went in the X. So then it was bucket and sticks for various yardages 30 to 100. I removed the ARCA rail to make it easier and sturdier to shoot off the U-shaped yoke on my sticks.

The gun is easy to shoot from B&S, and its setup well, with good dope. Now we’ll see how I can do, any excuses won’t be the gun…. 🤪

Wait, wait...Let me line up those excuses in advance:
- I've only had the gun less than two months
- I haven't used this particular ammo for more than a week and only one practice session
- I've only verified the DOPE at sea level
- I haven't shot EFT with it before
- I'll be jet lagged from the travel
- I don't have my regular stool and am using a collapsable one
- I don't have my BOB Stroller
- Blah blah blah.... o_O

Whew! Now I feel much better...

I wonder if the end cap is pulling the baffle(s) out of round when it’s tightened down. Just a thought. Maybe ill try to drop a pellet though tonight when I get home from work.

I know so little about professional target shooting that I had to look that one up.

Thank you @Centercut and Smok3y for the detailed reports.

It truly helps when you have very experienced shooters reviewing a gun.
Thanks @MAUMAU, I appreciate that. I try to write my reviews and comments from an unbiased point of view, and always point out the good, the bad and the indifferent. Thats why I discussed the issues with the slow leak near the beginning, the LP reg failure, and my recommendations above with cocking arm and HP reg drifting with bottle pressure. I also would mention that the gauges are cheap inaccurate ones, but then we also see those same type gauges on other high end airguns like the Delta Wolf and Ghost.
I can't say at this point if the .25 Skout is as accurate as my .25 Daystate Red Wolf or .30 Delta Wolf, or my .25 Panthera 600mm. I probably won't know that for certain until I have a shoot off at 100 yards where I alternate 5 shot groups (at least 5 groups, probably more) in the same conditions.
Once I do that I'll be posting here as well...
Next stop is to shoot it in Extreme Field Target, since almost all the to date reviews by others are benchrest only. Should be interesting. Derrick W @zx10wall is also shooting his .25 Skout the same weekend in the Texas State EFT (TexTreme) Championships.

2 of the Gauges were one of the first to go !!
Especially for the plenum pressure, being changes here = differing velocity ;) 1 1/2" used.
Also changed the solenoid Gauge for one similar tho a smaller 1 1/4" face

Couple small picture updates. Found screws that work with the ARCA MLOK rail to install my pic rail. 16mm

Stacked a couple weights in the front with 30mm screws.

Installed a pic rail on the rear to get a bit more of a bad rider, but also to try out a cheap monopod I have in the closet. (Probably should just buy the new Saber).

PSA. If you fly with a Skout, make sure to remove the valve from the bottle, don’t just unscrew the valve/bottle from the breech. At TSA today nothing except actually looking into the bottle would satisfy the moron worker bees that don’t know what a valve is or what 0.000 psi means on the pressure gauges. FYI.

The TSA took my pellets, said they were projectiles…

Filled gun after getting to the range. LP reg failed - again. Borrowed a .25 Daystate Delta Wolf from Lauren Parsons and shot that. Took me a couple lanes to get correct dope but did ok after that and am in 2nd after day 1. Really wanted to shoot the Skout but it wasn’t meant to be. This is the second time is less than two months that the LP reg has failed.. 😞
