What springer did you shoot today?

This morning shot a HW80 .25. First rifle with a Vortek spring I’m not happy with. It’s a 2 plus with metal sleeve. Find jacking difficult and feel metal to metal grinding. Time to inspect. Any suggestions?

It was accurate, just hard to jack.
‘Jumped on a HW85 .177. Just about snapped the barrel after jacking the 80. No pic.
This next gem, I bought used. Someone did something exceptional to it. A 34 premium .177. Love the trigger, which contributes to it’s accuracy.

This is 10 shots 35 yds. Pulled on e at 11 o’clock.

This one is one of my most accurate ones. Rain day 70 F. Crow

Marathon today D 460 .22. This thing is like throwing a hammer with accuracy.
IMG_6426.jpeg
Next up a TX200 Hunter .22. Accuracy is a natural for this gun. Clean

This gun might be sold, it’s my only Beech. Tempted to get one of the new stocks.
Last is another HW85 in .22 cal.

Targets took a beating today. This gun’s a treat to use. Crow

I got tired of waiting for the new scope to arrive for the new Winchester/Daisy so I pulled the one off the old Winchester/Daisy and went to work. I started off at the indoor range at 15 yards with the intent of moving to the outdoor range at 25 yards. Unfortunately the outdoor range was too busy and then the lightning shut down outdoors.

I zeroed the scope to the rifle and then fired five round groups with five different pellets. Please excuse the chicken scratch on the targets. The pellets starting with the lower left were Premier 7.7 grain hollow points, Sig 7.7 grain match, H & N Crow magnum, then the upper two are H & N Baracuda and Premier pointed pellets.

I think I will concentrate on the Baracuda pellets and refine my technique.

Not bad for the first 36 pellets through the rifle. Two inch orange dots.

Well, not a good day. The range wasn't busy so I got a free hour to play. I zeroed the Baracuda pellets at 25 yards, but they would not group under 3 inches. Three nice tight shots and a couple of flyers. Rezeroed with the Premier HP pellets and mostly the same result. I am hoping getting more pellets down the bore will stabilize things. Horrendous trigger pull is not helping. I am seating the pellets into the barrel with a slight push from a pencil eraser to get uniform pellet seating. I hope this is okay.

My HW50S started to do the same thing the other day. It's a break barrel springer similar to your rifle. I discovered the action screws were loose. Applied some blue loctite and snugged them up. Problem solved. Your trigger might improve a bit if you dab a bit of grease on the sear and lightly oil the various pivot points in the trigger mechanism. You can try a larger variety of pellets as well, might take more than a few to find what it likes best. Never hurts to run a patch down the bore too. Hope you get her figured out.

Shooting steel targets at 40-50 yds with the .177 D48. Raining like hell so I'm shooting from indoors at outdoors targets. Got some JSB Beast 16.2 gr and Seneca 16.1 gr domed pellets. The Diana seems to like them both. They really clang the steel.

Nice. You’re using full power spring I assume? Believe the old PG2 spring in my D52 has broken. Have an ARH ZRT spring, thinking about trying it out.

Shot this peep-sighted D34 last night. Not as pretty as Crow’s but man, I wouldn’t want to be a target. I think this gun has laser tracking.

Crow - Do you see any difference with accuracy and velocity between the HW97K and HW77K in the same caliber, with the two being basically the same gun, but with the HW77K having a slightly longer barrel?

Or am I mistaken about them being pretty much the same, except for the LDC on the HW97K?

Except for the sights, of course.

wish my 77 was .177 stumbled on a lefty 77 but .22 didn't stop me from buying it , Actually my hesitation helped the price at a airgun show , i bought at the same table a lefty TX200 and this lefty HW 77 long . HE said he thought it was going to be hard to find a buyer , i offered on both as i am a lefty .

I'm Obviously not Crow but the difference in length between the two is negligible and will have no effect on power a accuracy. With the lengths so close accuracy would more dependant on the machining of each particular barrel.

Unlike powder burners where longer barrels alow a complete burn for higher velocities. Springers have limited available air and most will reach full velocity within the first ten inches of barrel. Anything after that is just drag and whip. The 77K came about in the eighties when custom shops were cropping standard 77 barrels for better accuracy and winning Field Target competitions. The 97K was a development copying several popular custom shop 77 mods.

Only Magnum springers can utilize a little more barrel length.

I got out to the mobile blind today with the Ruger/Umarex springer right after lunch. I sat and watched for an hour and a half and did not see a single target. I didn't even cock the rifle or load any pellets. Either the critters are on to me or it was just a bad day, although it was bright sunny. On Monday I got two critters even though it was overcast.

@Mycapt65 - Thanks for your insights about this.

@Weste - Do you really find a blind to be helpful? I've always figured I'm about a million times bigger than they are, so there's not much chance that I could hide from them even if I tried. Kind of like the old 60's TV show, "The Land of the Giants"...

I just sit out on a folding stool or in a golf cart and wait for them to come around. They don't seem to mind me being there, until they get a pellet through their head. Then they don't usually think much after that.

I've actually found that if somebody comes along and I start talking to them, that draws the critters out and makes them feel more comfortable about me being there. Eating something while I'm sitting out there helps, too.

I'll often talk to them real nice like when I see them to get them to settle down. "Hey little guy..."

Just curious.

The blind is my Polaris Ranger. It is mostly for my comfort and to somewhat disguise what I am doing from my neighbors. We are on 2 1/2 acre tracts so it is not really close but I don't want to be reported to the local sheriff. I am a retired law enforcement officer and I know how they respond to a gun calls.

I find the two are capable of any thing I ask. The .25’s are really amazing, especially when I shoot at nite under lites, easy to watch flight. 77k .25 - 540 fps. 97k .25 cal. -550 fps.
The .22 cal. were lethal on the tree rats. I like jacking the longer 77. The 97’s - 600 and 630 fps. 77 long - 610 fps
The .177’s were all solid performers. The 97’s 865 and 840 fps. The 77 long 870 fps.
I don’t have a 77 in .20 long, but I will. 97 - 740 fps.
The 97 .20 I have thinks it’s a PCP for accuracy. The holy grail. Crow

@Weste - Thanks for the clarification. As a former LEO myself, I can fully understand where you are coming from with that. It makes a lot more sense now that I understand you're not trying to hide from the critters so much as avoiding unpleasant problems from neighbors and their fallout.

@crowski - aka Crow - Thank you, too, for your insights and data. I'd love to have that .20 97 of yours - Stainless look with blue laminate stock. Pretty awesome.

One of the big differences between the 77 is the stock. 77 more suited for irons, 97 with the high comb more suited for scope, hence the absence of iron sights. If you like the look of the longer barrel, HW does make a long barrel 97K. Limited quantities every 4 years or so I think. Probably a waiting list. Believe it’s only available from Krale now.

Fwiw the 97 and 77 stock combs are now nearly the same height. The new 77 stocks are often too high for people to use the irons be very careful. If you have a thin face you may be OK. Other newer Weihrauch stock designs are too high to use the supplied irons comfortably. I think this is a poor decision by Weihrauch that has disappointed many customers. Here's a side by side picture of a new 77 and 97 stock to show what I'm talking about.

Yes, it has the stock full power spring. The only mods I've made are removing the iron sights, and adding a Dianawerk muzzle weight and sling swivel studs. I had planned on digging out the chrono to see what kind of velocity I'd get with the heavy pellets, but then I remembered I loaned it to my nephew and he's yet to return it. He's gonna owe me some beers if he keeps it any longer.:)
