Tuning Air Venturi Avenger - Barrel Stiffening

I want to be able to shoot slugs accurately and the stock barrel doesn't cut it. The TJ barrel will also be longer so I should be able to create more power as well. We will see.

I agree, I haven't gotten the performance from slugs in my Avenger that I had hoped. I have a bunch of different brands, diameters, weights, etc. Out of them all, I can only get about 3 MOA with them at the best, where with H&N Baracuda pellets, I'm getting down to 1 MOA pretty consistently in low wind.

Yes the avenger definitely comes with a pellet barrel. It has shot sub moa at 30-35 yards but I really want to shoot slugs reliably. I will definitely update once it's all done.

It is just a barrel blank that I will have to get machined. The stock avenger barrel is choked and the TJ barrel is not choked. I want to be able to shoot slugs accurately and the stock barrel doesn't cut it. The TJ barrel will also be longer so I should be able to create more power as well. We will see.

I finally got some trigger time this morning on the Avenger with the modifications, and I am SUPER pleased with the results!!! I just put six pellets through the exact same hole at 50 yards just standing with a door frame as a "rest". That was by far the best group that I have shot with that gun yet, so I would attribute that to the barrel stiffening. I can't wait to get this on a bench and see how far out I can go.

So, to answer the question "Was it worth it?" I'd say definitely! I shoot this gun all the time, and this was a marked improvement on the performance that I am used to. These mods cost me around $40, plus some time, and I have increased the performance of this already good performing gun. I call this mod a winner!

It may have had some ragged edges, but all of the skirts were touching for sure. That was a definite improvement as it got occasional flyers before. Here is a link to this gun shooting within 0.25" at 25 yards, which is still right at MOA. I post my successes and folly's.

Yea I agree. Apologies about my comment I did not mean to offend anyone.

I went to the range today and shot 5 shots through the exact same hole at 40yards. I then turned the target around and shot another 5 shots again through that exact same hole.

Why did you shorten the shroud? Did the carbon tube length require it or was it some other reason?
I didn't like the barrel "flopping" around in there. I wanted the DonnyFL adapter to seat snugly against the barrel so that it all became part of a single assembly. Otherwise, if I left the 2+ inches on there, there would be that much of a gap for the barrel to move around in.

Thanks for the answer. I'm seriously considering this as opposed to just adding little 3D printed harmonic balancing rings, it seems like such a better solution on so many levels. Especially as I open up the gun so it can breathe better, more power paired with a more stable barrel can only be good, right?
 
I know im a tad bit late but what chassis and stock are you running on these gauntlets? ive been looking for something like this and no luck.
I 3D printed my own setup on the front stock and hand grip, I made an adapter for the but stock on my lathe, just a standard adjustable stock from PA, go to Tinkercad and search for Gauntlet grip and Gauntlet both halves fore grip.

Thank you!!! Love the way yours is set up. I'm trying to make it a little lighter and more agile and I've heard this takes 2-3 lbs off from the original synthetic stock. That ebay link has some incredible stuff, that will most likely be the rout I go. He seems to have really good feedback too.
 
This is my barrel stiffening solution. TJ barrel wrapped in multiple epoxied layers and a homemade "barrel band". The barrel band is actually just molded epoxy putty in between the barrel and bottle and then it is wrapped in super thick adhesive backed shrink tube. I made the epoxy support section because my barrel and bottle are not actually perfectly in line which caused all sorts of headaches when trying to use standard bands. This way they can be slightly off center to each other but tightly clamped. That heat shrink tube is very strong!

Yes it is capable of sub moa groups at 50 yards. Though I actually am exceeding the limit of the barrel twist rate of 1 in 22 and now I'm going to order a 1 in 16 twist barrel. Slinging slugs too fast now.

6 months later, so I'm sure you've put some rounds through this thing. How did it end up going?
Well I actually hadn't really shot either of my pcp's in that time. Been working on couple other projects with one of my other hobbies. I do have a 1:14 twist barrel and a 1:18 twist to try out. The 1:22 shoots really well but doesn't handle over 100 FPE very well. Hopefully when it cools back off I will start working on those barrel projects again.

I'm confused... Higher velocity = faster spin on the projectile. If it performed well at lower velocity your twist rate would be good at any velocity an air rifle can produce. A faster twist rate is to stabilize longer projectiles than your current twist rate is capable of. Higher velocity usually helps stabilize a projectile that needs more spin. A 220 swift powder burner can make 50 grain varmint bullets disintegrate from centrifugal force before they reach the target if you push them too fast.
