30-Yard Challenge

I'd prefer that my targets be level but it would be a little challenging to get there so I probably will not. My targets are on a home made pellet trap held down by the same metal bars that hold the cardboard over the rubber mulch. I can't move them much or at all easily. The electrical box this is on a 4x4 post supported by an old brake rotor on the bottom sitting on a concrete paver in my yard. The post leans some and the paver isn't perfectly flat. So I have to make little elevation adjustments as I move across the sheet. Elevation is an easy adjustment on the Rock, however. Almost too easy. There is a caged ball bearing on the handwheel you used that I put some moly grease on. The hand knob for windage is pretty smooth (also greased by me) but doesn't have bearings.

That’s a good idea Beerthief, I’m gonna try that today.
OH my targets might not be perfectly aligned in 4 directions , but i make sure they are perfect in the vertical and horizontal . this lets you keep your gun vertically level through the scope so as to lesson the chance of canting the gun

I submit this card for the leaderboard, as it tops my previous high score with my Reximex Daystar .177

199 16X

I thought for sure this was going to be a 200 card - two of the 19s were within a whisker of being 20s … so close!

It actually started raining during this card, but I kept shooting in the rain.

This $450 rifle bought used off the AGN Classifieds continues to amaze me with its accuracy. I swapped scopes to a Sightron SII 36x target scope after this 199 card and shot 193 13X - but it was real windy - can’t wait to try the Sightron on a calm day.

Enjoying a week off from work…

Awesome weather today, took a long morning Harley ride, then shot my 1st TYC card of today… 197 14x with .177 Daystar using new Sightron SII 36x target scope.

Picked the scope up for $425 delivered with discount! I don’t see a big difference in comparison to its Sightron SIII 36x and 45x “big brothers” - and the brothers sell for $1,100… at least not at 30 yards

And now for something completely different… lol

I have not shot my 1st air rifle, a .177 Umaxex Gauntlet, in at least 6 months.

I put the 36x Sightron on it (it a dovetail so easy swap from my Rexi Daystar) and shot 11 shots with Crosman 10.5g. It has always shot the Crosmans well…

1st shot was low (likely 8 month old air in regulator). Then it shot these 2 sub 1/4” groups at 30 yards… I’m not sh_tting.

Paid $195 for this rifle new, lol. I made some trigger improvement and put a carbon fibre tube on the barrel - but most everything is stock.

Now I’m gonna shoot this in the 30 Yard Challenge…

I submit this card for the leaderboard…

.177 Umarex Gauntlet Gen 1 - 191 9x !!

A few “1sts” :

1st card with my Gen 1 Umarex Gauntlet .177

1st time breaking 190 or better shooting Crosman pellets, lol

Incredible. Its crude loading. Even with CARM single shot loader, you have to mash the bolt shut to get the hard Crosman pellets into the breech - wears out your thumb…. but she has always been a good shooter with these cheap Crosman pellets. She is the rifle that got me hooked on this sport…

Congratulations on some really good targets!

I have a theory on my occasional 8 (some days there are a lot of them but on good days only a few). I think it could be me putting pressure on my home made shooting bench with my off hand, in my case my right hand. I've noticed I need the scope lined up where I do not need to push on the gun as I squeeze the trigger and if I put a little pressure on the table it can shift the point of aim and I start pushing the gun to compensate. So I'm working on getting things lined up and then putting that hand in my lap. I doubt this is an issue with a concrete or really heavy wood bench but that is not what I have.

Yeah Jim, I agree that it could be the bench and not just the pellet - or a combination of both…

… my shooting bench top is plastic, and flexes a lot.

I like that my bench top rotates, so it makes it easy to move from target to target, but I am going to look for a way to take some of the flex out of it.

Also, I going to shoot today and deliberately not touch the bench top with my left hand when shooting…

Thats the fun and challenge of this sport, you are always learning and experimenting.

Can you believe that a Umarex Gauntlet .177 can shoot 190+ with Crosman 10.5g !? This challenge has definitely improved my overall shooting. Also, having a 36x target scope on the rifle sure doesn’t hurt - makes small adjustments easy.

Gentlemen, you are going to be a bit surprised, I sure was.

After the success with the .177 Gauntlet and Crosman 10.5g Ultra Domes yesterday, I ran 4 cleaning patches through her and did some pellet testing with 9.25g Hatsan Vortex Strikes and 8.4g Air Arms (JSB) pellets. They all shot groups under a dime at 30 yards, but the Crosman were the best!?

So I shot my 1st TYC card of the day with the ole Gauntlet and Crosmans… result was a 198 14X !!!

I really took my time with the card, as I started so well that I knew it could be a high scoring card.

Note the hole near the “c” in score… that was my 3rd zero shot at the white dot above before starting the card (I take no zero shots once I start a target card, even if the wind shifts - part of the challenge is adjusting “on the fly”). So, there was definitely a “Crosman flyer” bad pellet in the tin. Thankfully it showed up before I started so that it didn’t ruin a great card.

This Gauntlet has always been an accurate shooter. It really has me thinking about how much I’ve spent on other rifles vs. the accuracy they deliver. Bottom line, if you get a good barrel and find a pellet that is a good match for it, you don’t need any adjustability or barrel tuners or dual regulators - just find the hold that works best and shoot it!

I submit this 198 14X - Umarex Gauntlet .177 with Crosman 10.5g for the leaderboard! Incredible!!

Pellet test with Daystate Wolverine R HP .22…

… obviously it like Monster Redesigned. It shoots them at 900fps. I believe that the special LW polygonal slow 1:32 twist barrel that the HP comes with was designed for that pellet.

Thought I might screw up the .03” 40 yard group, but it just kept putting them into a single pellet hole!

I shot one 30 yard challenge card with this awhile back and shot 191. I’ve lightened the trigger a bit … I shoot it better now. Thinking about giving it another try…. It is so much power at 30 yards with 25g, lol

Also, quite a change from the Gauntlet!

The Wolverine showed its pedigree…

I submit this 198 13X for the leaderboard.
Rifle: Daystate Wolverine R HP .22
Pellet: JSB Monster Redesigned 25g

I guess I ran out of concentration on Target #12. Target #9 is so close to being a “20” - a whisker off with the scoring plug.

So, the high dollar Daystate at least tied the lowly .177 Gauntlet. I shot 198, 196, 197 with the Gauntlet today - with Crosman 10.5g !!

Jim’s tip to keep my left hand from pressing of the shooting table seems to have definitely improved my scores - thanks JimD !!
