Need help with cleaning up Sheridan Silver Streak.

Treefrog,

Earlier in this thread you mention not to use Gun Oil on the inner workings of the airgun. I'm ok with that but where and how often should I oil it? Also, How do I test it to see if it is holding proper pressure? Suddenly, proper care for this airgun has become highly important.

Ol'Travler

OT,

To test it, you'll need to cock it. Quickly pull the bolt back far enough for it to click. It will stay open far enough to lay a pellet in front of it. Then pump it up by pulling the rear of the forearm away from the tube until it stops, then closing it. (There are videos on youtube if that isn't clear.) I'd pump it a few times and then fire it see if it holds any air. If you hear nothing but the hammer-spring when you discharge it, it may need seals. Make sure to check that there isn't a pellet in the barrel as he may have left it loaded.

You'll want to oil it at all the pump pivot points and put a couple of drops on the bolt too. When you open the pump and the piston is all the way out you'll want to put a few drops on the piston, too. Do a search for 'Airgun alcohol flush'. That should show you how. It will most likely be necessary if it doesn't hold air.

There are some very knowledgable people over on GTA (gatewaytoairguns.com) when it come to the Sheridan. It's another forum that isn't as new-stuff-centric. I'm mostly repeating what I've learned there. You should join there and post about this rifle in the vintage section. They'll love it!

You can mix up your own lube if you like. A 50/50 mix of motorcycle fork oil and non-detergent 90/wt gear oil is what I use. Once every 500 rounds is enough. Go light with the oil once it's holding air. It doesn't need much.

5mm pellets are harder to find than the common calibers but they are out there. JSB is a good choice for brand. They seem to be the most accurate.

Looking forward to the photos.

Cheers,

J~

Ok, I have taken the Sheridan apart for cleaning and lubricating where needed. I have attached some photos (I hope) to show the age of this airgun. The 3 that matter most the "Knurled Windage adjustment on Rear Sight". These were discontinued in 1953. "Forearm Attached with Roll Pins". This started in 1952. And the "Made In USA" stamped on the on Pump Tube right after "RACINE, WIS. instead of on the Receiver. This started in 1952. If there is something else in these pics that could better Date this Airgun let me know. I'm still believing that I may have stumbled into a 1952 Sheridan Silver Streak.

Wadcutter,

Thank you for converting my photos for everyone to see. I also appreciate the confirmation on 1952. This is the first airgun that I have ever owned so I didn't know where to start. The deeper I researched the more excited I became. It's time to get her all cleaned up, put back together and SHOOT!

Ol'Travler

Well Gentlemen, My 1952 Sheridan, "Silver Streak" cleaned up rather nicely if I do say so myself. Sadly, upon test firing it I discovered that it is going to need at least a Seal kit. It doesn't hold enough air to dent the bark on a tree 20 feet away. Now I have to decide if this is too difficult for a newbie in the "Airgun World" to do? Or should I hire it done. Baker Airgun is just a couple of hours from my home.

Treefrog,

I stumbled into some .20 cal. pellets. I took this gun to show it to the Lady I purchased it from after I cleaned it up. It had belonged to her Father. She told me that she was doing some further cleaning of his home and stumbled into a full Can of Sheridan .20 Cal. Pellets. She gave them to me! Even more reason to get this treasure to the shop and get her back in Shooting order!

"Rather nice" is an understatement...lol. Gorgeous!!
+1 on sending or taking it to Mike for a rebuild.
Never had to with mine, but search the forum. Should be any number of posts about doing an alcohol flush to clean out the insides which might do the trick. You can also try putting a couple drops of oil in it, 2 pumps and set it in the corner for a day or 2 then try shooting again. You may get lucky and it just needs a good lubing to get it up and shooting again.
@jccams Ummmm...mine's nowhere near as pretty or as old as Travler's, but Yep, got a 1973 Silver Streak in my collection :)
Not sure how much if any this may help, but a pdf file for the Sheridan Repair Manual:
