Anyone want a job?

I don't think New York City would allow it but if they posted on this forum to allowed anybody on this or any other airgun forum to legally use their air guns to kill rats they would significantly impact their population.

I think you are right.

When I read about that I thought, forget adding another bureaucRAT to the system.....Just issue every New Yorker who wants one a mid range priced, suppressed .177 cal PCP gun with an SCBA tank, a nightvision sight on it and a case of Hades pellets. Give them a card that gets them free tank fills and more pellets at NYC fire departments. The nightvision device transmits real time shooting video to the Rat Czar's office for quality control.

NYC isn't going to want guys running around with rifles in the Manhatten subways and sewers.

I suspect they're going to have a hard time killing their rats. Between all the restrictions NYC has on killing rats, to people's squeamishness about the issue, the inevitable media feedback loop that will develop around any techniques. . . not much will happen.

Unless something really surprising happens, I forsee someone stepping forward with some sort of chemical sterilization "catch and release" gimmick or something else, equally ineffective and giving positive PR to the appropriate target demographic.

I have eliminated over 50 rats in the last year and a half or so using traps. I find shooting them too time consuming given my limited patience and the lower density of rats on my property. Although New York City has a much larger problem and shooting would be a piece of cake. Rats that have an ample food supply are very leary of trying anything new so very difficult to trap with just bait. Therefore poison bait is unlikely to make a huge dent and less they put it in the same kind of food they're already eating. Also many states have made effective poison illegal. Effective traps are also a liability since they can kill birds other animals injure small children or pets. So that's a tough problem in New York city. The traps I use have an optical sensor all they need to do is poke their head in the wrong location and they get there's skull or neck crushed and spikes put through their throat. But I'm on private property don't have any pets nearby or small children. It did take out a few birds and squirrels as well.

To do the job properly the new Rat Czar will need to live in the sewers among the rats for a few months to learn their ways,
Considering the cost of NYC living that might be an employment incentive (job perk), because for $170k a year salary that's better than he'll be able to afford.
Hmmm!
Will he have to claim this on his income tax?

I live off grid way up in the hills. What traps are you using?

if you look at my YouTube channel search for rat trap Chronicles. You can get a idea of what's trap I use it's homemade with a Victor rat trap with nails and saw blade and 50% more spring tension and using an optical trigger instead of having them having to bite the bait hook. My experience many rats are too clever and do not bite but only smell. If they even get near the bait there nailed on my trap.

SWEET!
Can you post a link to the video, please, @BlackICE

You said it. There's a far different mentality towards the mere sighting of a gun nowadays. For knowledge and argument sake, here's a good piece of history:

I’ll pass.

There was a product made that would sterilize male and female rats. Not sure if they still make or use it. It would be placed in specialized boxes, then set up around the target site. It was pretty costly though. Proper sanitation and exclusion helps along with trapping and/poison if allowed.

Sanitation, exclusion, expensive. . . when you have a fairly active homeless population that's looking for things they can grab and sell, that's a no-go.

The high homeless and rats populations are symbiotic! Can't get rid of rats if you have a lot of homeless eating and littering on the streets. Maybe they should sprinkle no cost (DEA confiscations) Fentanyl mixed into some rat bait that should kill them more quickly than using blood thinners.
That's a heartfelt solution for sure.
May I suggest you put on your freshly steamed and pressed Sunday go to meetin' suit; and stroll through a homeless encampment personally delivering the goods.
Don't forget to ask one of them to spit-shine your shoes
They won't be impressed with you but will leave a lasting impression upon you
Just sayin"
