So i just had a fit of " enough with the computer " so as i picked up my new heavy barrel today i figured why not clean it ( it already was )
And then run a few slugs thru it.

The barrel seem to have a long run in where i have to " really push" on the rod to move the slug forward, but after 50 - 55 mm that just stop and the weight of the 3 mm CF rod i use are almost enough to push the slug the rest of the way thru the barrel, at least very little pressure are needed for the middle part of the barrel.
When i then reach the muzzle end the barrel choke up again and i have to push hard again for the remaining 25 mm.

Mind you this is not a whole lot different from my old 600 mm superior barrel.
The 600 mm barrel only have the choke for the first and last 25 mm, but along the length there are a few more grippy spots but very small.
The new barrel i can drop a 20 grain Zan slug in it and it go in to flush with the barrel, on the old 600 mm barrel the 20 grain slug still have 2 mm to go when it is "seated"
So i think maybe some changes have been made in the breech end, or maybe cuz it is a Heavy liner it is a bit different here.
Shooting the rifle with the regular superior 600 or 700 mm barrels and seating a 20 grain slug, it do take a bit more effort than a shorter 13 grain slug.
even more so if its a H&N slug which to me seem to be a harder compound the slugs are made of.

So i looked down the bore and the groves in the new heavy liner are less pronounced than the standard liner, this can also be seen on the pellets them self, the standard barrel do leave the flat spots you would expect on the slugs, but the new 700 mm heavy barrel, well i pretty much have to imagine i can see those on a slug or pellet run thru that barrel.

I dunno, nothing to do but wait until my Maverick are ready for pickup in the shop where it is getting its broken cocking lever fixed.

Also found out there will be no shooting new years evening no matter the weather, my friend is otherwise engaged, so i will have to figure something out soon, or spend the night on the computer.

I can not recall what my regular superior liner are, but it is not very far from this,,,,,,, which i find counter intuitive,,,,,,, if i can not shoot heavy stuff better i will be soo let down, and might even turn into a FX hater,,,,,, CUZ upon first getting my 600 mm Maverick i had a lot of problems with it, not really wanting to shoot anything well at speed, aside for the beast pellets which it did fine with, but monster redesign i really wanted to shoot, those i had to shoot slower then 600 FPS to get them to group well.
But i have a FAC rifle and want to shoot fast and hard

putting my standard 600 mm superior barren next to this heavy barrel, and the lines on the outside are pretty much the same.

FX 177 barrels have been 1:18 for a very long time. Maybe call FX and ask them? I would return it if I were you.

1:18 is barely enough for the 12.5 grain NSA and 13 grain knockout, even 15 grain needs about 1:14 twist and the 20 grain needs 1:12 maybe even 1:11.

I agree thomasair, and i of course expect the best at this price range, but am willing to polish if need be, just not in current situation.

it was my understanding that heavy barrels would not be choked, but i am now inclined to think that these barrels have been mixed up.
I have not dared to touch the barrel other than push a few slugs thru it.
In all fairness pushing a pellet thru have a more uniform feeling, and at least a bit more resistance on the push rod going thru the middle 90 % of the barrel.
Slugs on the other hand once thru the first 50 mm almost feel like it can free-fall the rest of the way, i am sure if i used my steel cleaning rod that is heavier than the 3 mm Carbon fiber rod i used, it would be able to push the slug thru the middle 90 % of the barrel length

CUZ a 1:18 pitch do not sound very heavy to me, that sound more like regular pitch

Looking here it look like it is a regular superior barrel i have, with heavy lasered onto it ( 1:18 twist rate )

fx-twist-rates-1637380297-jpg.181443

.22 cal heavy look to be 1:16 so i would assume a .177 should be eve more 1:14 maybe ???
I would also assume comparing a 1:18 barrel to a 1:16 or 1:14 side by side on a table it would be easy to see a difference in twist rate.
I really think there have been a mix up at FX at the laser engraving machine ( comparing the heavy barrel to my 1 year old superior barrel ) it look the same twist rate.
Almost willing to bet FX have a bunch of superior branded barrels with heavy twist rates at the factory or going out to customers / retailers.

ATM i feel very unsure and would advise extreme caution to any potential buyers of .177 barrels ( well heavy barrels at least )
