How tough is it to shoot coyotes in the dark?

May i suggest try putting a rat bait out every day during the week . This will establish a feeding pattern for the yote , he will expect the rat to be there .

They definitely don't have a regular pattern. I thought they would return around 11pm or 1am as I have saw in the nights before. Nodding off indeed and quite hard on my body sitting there for those long hours. I did get up and stretch for a bit. Oh well. It wasn't the night to celebrate but not a night to soon forget.

Not for last night's stormy weather. My blind that I had setup two nights ago were blown over, table and all. It would have been dangerous to have set up my blind on the loft last night as the wind was just pounding thru the opening all night long.

It is 25 yards from my chair and if you use the lumber on the picture on the floor. The bait station is in the middle of the field to the left (between the edge of the building outside left and the fence in the middle of the picture. My trail cam was set up on the back fence facing me as that's where they normally enter into the field.

I don't use the Laser on my Pard and yes they are very dangerous to the eyes.
I have been feeding these coyotes since last year when I first starting hunting them. I had one shot and I missed. You can watch that video in my channel under Coyote#4. That was back in October (11 months ago) of last year and I was regularly feeding them with rats and capturing footages with my trail cam. So I have been drying to get another chance at them since. Anyway, after that miss, I haven't been back to hunt them until recently when the farmer texted me about the lost of his chickens to the coyotes. But with the new loft setup, I should be able to have a higher success rate as long as the condition is not like last night.

@Ingwe. Yes I have called them in the past and they came. But this past Saturday night I did call them but it was so windy that I didn't think they were out at all. I was there tonight to retrieve my trail cam footages from Sunday morning till evening. And they were there eating the two rats and some chicken wing bones I left there. I was only able to tag one rat tonight and I left it there as bait again. My plan is to continue to leave them baits till Saturday night when I plan to hunt them again. Hopefully the weather is okay but we have some snow in the forecast. So will see.

I think that depends on what wavelength IR you're using. 850nm IR has the visibly red LEDs. 900nm IR does not glow at the source.

I asked a few pages ago wondering if any of you have ever tried coyote hunting using night vision goggles with a laser on your gun.....looking over the gun using the laser dot as your aiming point.
I put one on my FX Impact and sighted it in and now waiting for the time to try it out
Another lifetime ago, I was a SWAT officer, and we used that setup on operations, so I am familiar with the setup, but I haven't heard of anyone hunting with it

@Vetmx. Ya no, I didn't do any scent control that night. It was so bloody windy that the coyotes probably staying in their den all night.
@timmah. I am using the 850nm as my Pard008 is build for that wavelength. I have tried the 950nm with my recording but the image was not as clear as using the 850nm. My trail cam puts out 850nm and the coyotes didn't seem to mind it at all as they would stick around to feed on the rats. Maybe they don't see IR?
@Ingwe. I never used the laser to hunt. I think the moving red dots would alert them and the laser is not an IR light source. So I think coyotes would see it. Only way to find out is to try it out. Good luck.
by the way, I returned last night to retrieve the trail cam footages and yup they returned Sunday morning 4am. So I missed them by 1-1/2 hour as I left at 2:30M. Timing was everything. They hung around for a good 45 mins until the two rats and some chicken bones were eaten up. They returned 11pm the same night to check for food as well. Not many rats last night as I only shot one, but one is better than none. Hopefully my trail cam will capture their return and give me a timeline.

Steiner IR laser and a pvs 14?
Where I’m at it‘s not legal to use a laser, visible or not, to hunt with. Cannot project aiming point onto target.

Hopefully you will be able to pattern their movement. It may not be the same time every day, it might coincide with the moon rise or set, or even straight up. There used to be charts on-line of the major/minor feeding times.

@customcutter. I will gather more intel with the trail cam footages and give myself a better window of opportunity. Timing is everything. If I am lucky, they will show when I am fresh and alert, lol.

We are expecting some severe weather in the AM. Too foggy this AM to try. I did do a little reconaissance of some of the different pastures and found some trails leading into one pasture. Maybe in a few days!
