Help with Break Barrel .177 Multi-Shot rifle

First 10-shots out of my new Gamo .177cal Break Barrel Model Swarm Maxxim X10 Gen2 Air Rifle.

Hello everyone, received the new Gamo .177cal Model Swarm Maxxim X10 Gen2 Air Rifle today and got the scope mounted. Read the instructions, cleaned the barrel and loaded up the first magazine with 10 H & N Field Target Trophy 8.64gr pellets. It was too cold ( 50 degs ) and windy (11 mph cross wind ) for me to set up my 25-yard range and my portable Benchrest, so I used the plastic garbage can as a rest and stood up to shoot. I drew a circle around the pellet can lid with a crosshair for my target ( see photo ). My very first impression, is that I like this rifle. Only time will tell about the quality and durability but in the meantime I will get the barrel broken in, zero in the scope, get some benchrest time, I think this will be a fun rifle to own.

Thanks to all of the kind folks that offers suggestions and help.
Be safe and have a great day, ThomasT

I hope it meets your expectations. 50 degrees ? That would be a heat wave where I am.

How about the rifles sound? Is it louder than you thought it would be? Thanks

Good morning mochajoe,

I live in Deep East Texas and water freezes at 70 degrees here...:). I am a hot weather person and just cannot take the cold, much less with added wind.

I was surprised at the sound, not really loud but a bit more than expected. To be 100% honest after a couple of shots, ( and I was thinking more about the accuracy ) I really did not pay that much attention. I just sold a .22cal Origin PCP and it was super quite and several years ago I had a .22cal Break Barrel Ruger and it was a lot louder than this new gun.

Overall at this point, I am really pleased with my purchase.

Be safe and have a great day,

The only multi shot I would own is the Hatsan Proxima.

Just my humble opinion

ugg, unlderlevers. :) But how many different models of multi-shot rifles have you tried?

I have owned four. The only one that works flawlessly for a extended period of time is the Proxima.. and is the only one I still own.

That's good to know, thanks!

My "old" gamo gen2 10x magnum went easily 10k rounds flawlessly. Had it about a year before trading it off, I should check w/the new owner and see how it's going.

For me, Turkish guns are probably 2nd to the bottom after Chinese in quality control.

And Gamo Springer's are at the very bottom of the barrel in airguns as far as my opinion goes.

Good lookin' guns, shoot well, not expensive, good warranty, and eh, I only have 25Y, and about every air rifle I've owned shoots dime-sized groups at that distance. :/

I really got stretch my range out someday, but eh, 1st world problem. But then I can appreciate one of my finer plinker's abilities I guess.

Me, bottom of the list is anything from Umarex. Friggin' junk falls apart so quickly. Just sold my last one, won't make that mistake a, oh, 20th time! lol

Even the el-cheapo $100 "silent cat" was a better shot than I am.

Know anything about the crossman mag fire extreme? Thanks

Hello again mochajoe,

Not a lot, I did read and view several reviews when I was looking at various rifles. It is heavy, if I remember correctly a bit over 9-pounds, and that was more weight than I was looking for. I did not read any negative remarks as best that I can remember. Maybe some folks here on the Forum will share their knowledge about the rifle.

I can't think of anything that meets that criteria other than a Gamo Swarm Maxxim.

Hello again, Ok after spending quite some time reading and reviewing, I believe it is narrowed down to two rifles: number one your suggestion, the Gamo Swarm Maxxim 10X Gen2 and second the Gamo Swarm Whisper. Not a lot of cost difference between the two rifles with the Maxxim a bit more expensive but has a number more features.

If anyone owns one of these guns I surely would appreciate any pros or cons that you can share.

Thanks and have a great day,

ThomasT

I have a GAMO Bone Collector Swarm, it has a 10 shot magazine, It's going on three years old, has well over 1500 shots through it, it's minute of squirrel accurate and 100% reliable, It has a beautiful wooden stock and the metal is bright blue, It weighs 7 pounds not counting it's Leeper's Bug Buster scope.

My grown son is also into air guns, he also owns a GAMO Swarm Magnum, his has been shot more than mine and has been just as trouble free, guns are mechanical devices and as such they can have issues, but so far we haven't experienced any with our two GAMO Swarm rifles

The only issue I had with my GAMO was a heavy trigger pull, Air Gun Detective on U-Tube sells a replacement screw with an allen wrench and instructions for $10.00 that reduces the trigger pull weight down to about 1-1/2 pounds, I did mine in less than five minutes, my son also got one for his GAMO Swarm.

Hello Homer,

Thank you very much for sharing your first hand experience with two Gamo Swarm model rifles. Between you and your Son it appears that both guns have seen a lot of use with excellent service.

Yes, my Maxxim has a rather "firm" trigger also but I have not tried to make any adjustments to date. I want to get several hundred rounds down the barrel before I make any changes to the factory stock condition. From what I have read so far, that the out-sourced trigger modification does improve the overall quality of the trigger on these rifles and most likely I will adapt to my gun.

Thank you and have a great day,

ThomasT

Hello everyone,

Nice warm morning (72degs) so I set up my Benchrest and shot 50-rounds total through the new Maxxim. I now have just 60 total rounds so still a long way from getting the Barrel seasoned. Taking everything into consideration I am pleased with the way this new rifle is shooting. I need to work on adjusting the trigger today, it is the only complaint I have with this rifle. I cleaned the barrel first thing this morning but by round #4 and #5 you can see it began to pull the shots to the right. My best round was #2 and I had two shots through “the almost” same on two holes. I was using H&N Field Target Trophy .177cal, 8.64gr and the wind was 5-12 mph. The specifications on the paper target are: The main center is 1-inch concentric from 1" out to 6" and the four outer circles are 1-inch inside diameter.

Be safe and have a great day,
ThomasT
