Compact PCP wanted... but which?

Hi all, I am looking for a good compact PCP for some good pesting and plinking fun but could use some personal advice/ experience. I've been looking into some different brands and models but really cannot make up my mind. I currently have a Taipan Vet standard in .22 that i bought last spring. love that gun. absolute beast. I'm now looking for a good quality and accurate compact PCP. Here's where my research has led me so far.

What I'm looking for:

  • high shot count
  • ease of use/ tunability
  • quality of build and can take a beating
  • .22 maybe .177
  • is it OEM quiet or will i need to purchase an after market moderator
  • use for shooting rats and pest birds in and around barns at night with my night vision add on ( pretty close range)

The guns I'm currently disputing over

  • Taipan vet compact: already have one in standard and love it. great trigger and ease of use, build quality, ergonomics, factory quiet etc. The only thing I worry about with the vet compact is shot count... talontunes has it for 1300 something dollars
  • AGT Uragan Compact: shot count looks great ( I think around 90 shots on the reg at 830ish FPS with 18.13 grain ?) not sure how the trigger is as it looks like a plastic trigger... can also find this gun 200-250$ cheaper at Krale so there's a bonus as well. the mags seems easy to use and it comes with an extra moderator from Krale. ergonomics are good I assume?
  • RTI prophet Performance Compact: the thing I really like about this gun the power output for such a small gun. I'm not sure about shot count though? was getting differing numbers in my research. the only problem i see is that I also would like to acquire a full length RTI prophet in .22. the thing I like about the full length prophet in the ability to easily change the barrel. talontunes has the compact on sale for 1575$

Questions I have that maybe users could help answer

  • Taipan Vet Compact: what is the shot count like with differing grain pellets and what are compact vet owners shooting with this gun that may get them good accuracy and shot count?
  • AGT Uragan Compact:
  • How is the finish on this gun? what is the trigger like? can I mess around with the hammer spring easily? what's the build quality like?
  • RTI Prophet Compact: What kind of shot count are you getting with this gun? what pellets are you shooting? can I mess around with the hammer spring easily? what's the build quality like? how's the trigger?

As always, If you have any experience or input into my inquiries please feel free to add them, or if you have a different gun that you feel I should look into then please also add that! Please feel free to correct any of my information if it is wrong; I'm always open to learning new things.

I greatly appreciate any and all input. however, please do not simply put " +1 for blank airgun" I would like to know why you feel that way about the airgun your rooting for or not rooting for even.

thank you all in advance for you time and input!

What's a high shot count to you? I have a .22 Taipan Veteran Short and love it. Extremely accurate. I shoot JSB 16gr at 880fps. Then 2 turns CCW on DonnyFL speed dial gets me at 640fps with the same pellets which I use on close range birds in our barns. I get about 60 shots at 880fps at 250bar fill. Now lower power can get quite a bit more. Just depends what you want shot count wise. The Prophet would be an awesome gun to get I think. I would have went that way maybe if I didn't have the Short. But just to try it as I don't know if it's better or not.

well my standard vet is getting roughly 70 shots at 890 fps with the 18 grain JSBs... Id say anything over 75 shots per fill. also which RTI would you go with? the compact or the original? because I would love the original for some long range woodchuck fun.

lol, you want 'everything' i understand ... so you already have a nice gun and some experience .. my opinion is the more experience you get the more you realize a compact gun in practical use is pretty useless as an all around gun and is only good for a very few specific roles, larger platforms are just 'better' for most things .. other than that you just think the look is cool, which is ok, so get what you like the most ..

I guess your right... I do want everything. the thing I like about compacts is off hand shooting and maneuverability. but if i was to get an all around easy to tune gun that was practical in most situations, what would you recommend?

Compact Vet in .22 with the 13.43 grain pellets is good for about 95 shots when set for just under 20fpe, (around 800 fps if memory serves). Two summers ago my son and I both shot it through a 48 shot FT match without filling it, so 96 shots. I was shooting after him at each lane. So I shot took shots 93, 94, 95, and 96 and both of the targets on that lane were pretty far, I remember the near was probably 40-45 yards, and the far was 50-55 yards. I shot a 48/48. So, it's perhaps off the reg a bit for probably shots 80 + or maybe even 85+, but the fps is still a small enough ES to keep them inside the kill zone of a field target out to around 52ish yards.

Oh yeah, field target cleanable accuracy with those 13.43s (read: very very very accurate).

I've also shot those 13.43gr/.22s from the Vet Short for my buddy Rex's silhouette matches, to good effect. I think the distances there are 40, 50, 60, and 70 yards. Ram, turkey, pig, chicken, chicken at each distance. Chickens aren't much bigger than a quarter. I've had some good showings but I think 39/40 was the best I've done with it. So, it'll reach out there too, for such a light/low powered pellet.

That seems just about right. I love compact guns but mine are all budget deals. My daughters pp700w is lights out inside 20 yards. Perfect rat gun in my estimation. Hard to beat with another 1500 bucks. Compact guns just work with less barrel length and are therefore less efficient. Getting a duel tank would up shot count but there goes your light and handy approach. Idk if money is burning a hole in your pocket I can see going after a super sexy compact gun. I like the uragan guns. I bet those CZ barrels are super accurate.

Out of the Prophets I'd choose the compact version as that's what I like. Shot count in theory should be higher than others at similar power as the air capacity is highest. I can't say I'm not intrigued though by there .22 LR barrel they designed for the Monster RDs. Would be awesome shooting long ranges I'm sure. But yeah using it closer ranges would be overkill so that's why I'd go with the Compact.

While I think the Uragans are great guns also by the way, the Compacts arent near as powerful as the other 2 if the power was needed or wanted.

Outer: Like most hobbies there are various levels of equipment and prices. Some airguns are self contained (do not need external means of power, ie compressed air via bottle, pump, CO2 cartridge, etc) such as the multi-pumps from daisy, Crosman, etc and the break barrels. The higher end PCPs are expensive to buy and support with the necessary ancillary devices but offer power and accuracy for longer ranges. For plinking and hunting there is a whole universe of inexpensive and relatively inexpensive rifles and pistols. Plus, you can always begin with an entry level type of airgun to see what you like and go from there. Like my BIL says, "It aint where you start, its where you end up."

Outer: I started out with a cheap Benjamin Fortitude. Honestly, it works for me most of the time as I only do plinking and target shooting. But the more you stay on this forum the more you will want to buy new guns to play with. I really like the European brands (Taipan, RTi, AGT, just like the OP's listed models), unfortunately, they all start at the $1500 range.

OP: I am also considering the same guns, leaning towards RTi PPC - But I read that it is not quiet in factory settings, and needs to add baffles or moderator. I supposed if it can be tuned to sub 20fpe, it will get higher shot counts and quieter?

The Uragan Compact .22 will come closer to 800 fps with 15gr pellets. I have a .177 I tuned up to 18-19 fpe with 10.34gr pellets and it's a laser out to 50 yards. The one problem you will have with the Uragan Compact in .22 is if you want to push it up to the 30 fpe range you are going to have to raise the reg and when you compensate by adding more hammer spring the trigger pull is going to get stiffer.

If I may put another option out there - Cricket 2 Bullpup. 26" long and external hammer spring to adjust anywhere up to 40ish fpe. Very efficient with air - I never seem to run out of air on my Cricket Mini Carbine shooting around 25-26 fpe.

So to those that are supporting the Uragan compact I have a few questions for you, how easily can the hammer spring be adjusted? is there availability to switch calibers on this gun? one of the things I really like about my current taipan is the ability to just hammer spring tension but I'm more of a set and forget kind of shooter and don't want to have to change my hammer tension constantly as I do many different pesting operations i.e.in barns for birds and rats, outside at longer ranges, ground hogs at even longer ranges. that's why id want a compact for my indoor pesting types. something I don't have to mess with constantly although the ability to tune down slightly would be nice... an the ability to change between .177 and .22 would also be helpful... decisions decisions.

thanks everyone for all the help and input!
