30-Yard Challenge

Nice shooting Joe! That is a killer card for a .177 at 40 yds. Looks like that RAW is dialed in. How fast were you shooting the 13.4gr pellets? Also, what scope are you using and at what power? That info helps populate all the info on the leader board. I find it useful to see what other shooters are using and doing to get great scores.

I am still in the tuning process on my DRS Classic 500mm .177. I am having trouble with the 22 round .177 FX magazines from my Crowns sliding out of the DRS. They line up fine but are not held in tightly by the one rubber o-ring. The one mini-Mag that came with the DRS (and uses 2 o-rings) stays in better but doesn't feed the rounds any better. Using my calipers I get 15.3mm for the mag opening on the DRS, but 15.0mm on the Crown MkII. Hum, that's an 11 thou difference. I would think that the computer controlled milling machines at FX should be good to 2 or 3 thou.

Despite that difficulty I am posting, for the Leaderboard, my latest DRS 30 yd Challenge - 196 - 12x

I am going to work on the barrel some more to see if I can get rid of the occasional flyers that keep showing up (2nd shot on #4). Ed has inspired me to spend the effort to really get the barrel inlet and inside well polished with all edges smoothed.

This next photo is of the new stock for the DRS. This is an American Walnut Caro stock from FORM Stocks in the UK. The adjustable cheek riser wes desperately needed and the full length Anshutz UIT rail on the forstock makes it easy to add my palm rest (for HFT) and a Pic rail for target shooting.
I 3D printed an adapter for the butt stock to allow me to use the Saber Tactical monopod.

Cheers,
Greg

That Form stock on your DRS is beautiful Greg! I see that you are going “all-in” to get the DRS shooting .177 pellets at competition level.

In theory, the DRS platform should outperform the legacy Dreamline/Crown platforms - especially the improved barrel rigidity. The challenge is getting the big valving/porting to play well with pellets, especially .177, as I believe the DRS platform was designed with slug performance in mind.

How fast do 30 cal slugs have to go in order to stabilize?

This definitely sounds like a tuning issue, and you're on the right track thinking that speed plays a big role in slug accuracy. Slugs generally need higher velocities to stabilize properly, and 750 fps is quite low for 50-grain slugs in .30 cal. Even at 890 fps, the inconsistency in point of impact suggests that something else might be affecting accuracy.
A few things to consider:
  1. Barrel Twist Rate & Slug Compatibility – Some FX barrels are optimized for pellets rather than slugs. If your barrel has a slower twist rate, it might struggle to stabilize heavier slugs.
  2. Regulator & Hammer Spring Balance – Increasing the regulator pressure helps, but if the hammer spring isn't delivering enough force to open the valve fully, you might not be getting the efficiency you need. You could try adjusting the valve timing to see if it improves consistency.
  3. Slug Fit & Barrel Lead-In – Some slugs perform better when they engage the rifling properly. If the slugs are too loose or too tight, accuracy can suffer. Have you tried different diameters?
  4. Barrel Cleaning & Lead Build-Up – FX barrels can be sensitive to fouling. If you've been testing different slugs, there might be lead deposits affecting accuracy.
  5. External Factors – Wind, scope mounting, and even harmonics from the barrel can play a role. If your groups are erratic rather than just large, it might be worth checking for mechanical inconsistencies.
If you're willing to push the regulator higher, you might see better results at 950-1000 fps, but as you mentioned, that comes at the cost of air efficiency. Some shooters have had success with heavier slugs (55-60 grain) at slightly lower speeds, so that could be another avenue to explore.
There's also a video testing different slug weights in FX .30 cal platforms, which might give you some insights. Have you considered swapping barrels or trying a different liner? That could be a game-changer.
What slug types might work better for my setup?

RAW Rapid  My old RAWs

Here are pictures of the various RAW rifles that I've owned over the years. These were all built by Martin before he sold the company and note that they all have those beautiful walnut stocks. Sadly, I sold them. All I have left is a new HM1000x in .177 built by Martin too. It's a great 100 yd gun with slugs. In reviewing the targets I've shot with these rifles, there's no doubt that Martin Rutterford can build the most accurate rifles around. Would one of you please come around and kick my a$$ for selling these guns?

CS4 - maintenance after no use for 2 years?

Would someone kindly explain to me the reason for changing the water?

I have an Omega Trail Charger, which I believe is a fairly similar design, and it has been sitting rarely used for about a year and a half. Before that it was used fairly often for a couple years. Anyway, I have never changed it's water. Upon inspection, it still resembles clean water. Has it's thermal cooling properties changed over time?

Please - Need suggestions for scope rings **UPDATED**

Late to this posting.... I have an FX Dreamline Classic with the BKL #257 mediums that allow enough mag space with my Hawke Vantage 3-12 mounted. It could matter more as to where your eye relief and scope length plays into the ring mounting as far as compatibility to the mag clearing or interference.
I've had no issue with the BKL single screw strap mounting and holding securely and they provide a clean and simple look. (y)

How fast do 30 cal slugs have to go in order to stabilize?

Slugs are not as forgiving as pellets. You need the right twist rate for the LENGTH of the slug but it also must fit the bore correctly. Slug the barrel and find out what the groove diameter is. Then get slugs that are.0005 larger than the groove diameter.
I think your right on and from what I have seen, no 2 barrels are exactly the same so slugging is very important.

Airforce  Airforce 22 Condor 17 inch LW Barrel 39 gr at 1050 fps

Great to hear... I did similar with a .177 Condor that I was determined to make into a mini slugger. Had originally tried to use lapping compound to remove the choke and after about an hour of that just said 'piss on it' and chucked up the barrel, cut the choke off, recrowned and done. Still havent tested with a lot of slugs, but initial results were encouraging and my groups at 65 yards were about half the size of before.

Where theres a need is there a product ?

We always used a crappy .22 revolver with shot shells on the front porch of the trailer.. The felt cleaning pellets have some serious power, I know they'll dent drywall 🤣
Not exactly airgun related, but I'll chime in on this... I have tested many guns with rat shot and by far the best pattern I've gotten is with a Rough Rider revolver... Until I picked up a little smoothbore cheapo .22 and it patterns like a champ. When I see a carpenter bee at the top of my roof or have been failing miserably with the airsoft, I'll grab that and it's game over as long as it's far enough away that I dont hit the house. Have used it to take chippers out to 20 yards as well. Had experimented with using post it notes to make shotshells for a DAQ 50 cal and those did well, but not as well as you'd expect. The rifling just messes with the shot, even when encased in the post it note.

Airforce  Airforce 22 Condor 17 inch LW Barrel 39 gr at 1050 fps

I finally achived some accuracy with slugs and Airforce Condor.. I took the factory Airforce lother wather barrel with choke at 18 inchs and cut 1 inch off the muzzle end.. I hand lead lapped the barrel.. Its .221 in diameter... I got a mold from a .225 48 grain bowman mold decked down to a weight of now 39.0 grains.. To my suprise in testing the slugs unsized at .225 shoot best.. Im using a Doug Noble valve and heavy spring and 110 gram hammer .. Its accurate and right at 1050-1065fps... I wasnt expecting good results...I figured it wouldnt stablise in the 1-17.7 twist..I was wrong...The Lother walther barrel looks really good in the borescope..The best interior finish i have in a barrel currently... I thought i needed a 28 inch barrel in a Airgun to get 1050 fps with 40 grain...You can do it with 17 inch in Airforce...The same combo with doug valve and 28inch barrel 1165fps-1200. Im handi cap...Im so happy with accuracy with12mm 17 inch barrel Airforce Condor..Even with moderator very short and Light...I can carry with cane or crutches...Anyways so happy to finally have a accurate 22 cal slug slinger for Legal Pa small game hunting on my property...Thanks AGN friends that helped me along the way..

... because I surely don’t wanna go smaller on jets or higher on reg pressure as would be so inefficient and overcooking it a bit…..
I have no interest in 30 cal and cannot / don't want to comment on that .

But I spent a long enough time in this game with jets to figure out what combination doing what.

First, you didn't said what is you barrel length. You just said the jets are 0.1 and 0.2.

So a wrong combination is leading you in a wrong way.

0.1 and 0.2 jets keeping the Dwell open for long = possibly wasting a lot of air.
Short barrels with wrong - long Dwell = possibly wasting a lot of air.
And here it comes the low fpe, you blew the air in the air and not to propel the projectile.

Larger number of jets will close the air blast faster until the projectile is still inside a longer barrel rifling.

Please - Need suggestions for scope rings **UPDATED**

Hello AGN friends,

I currently have FX no limit rings on an FX Dreamline. They have lost zero for the third time. One side of each ring cap keeps loosening. Absolutely ridiculous for a platform with zero recoil or vibration. My problem is the height of the Dreamline mag. Any suggestions for a quality very tall set of rings would be much appreciated. They don't need to be adjustable as rifle is used for pesting under 65 yards.

Thank you in advance.
just buy the best name brand rings , they are worth it .

Please - Need suggestions for scope rings **UPDATED**

Sarc,. alert. I'm surprised you got the FX NO Limits to work at all, mine are in a dump somewhere, literally couldn't get enough torque on them to tighten the slop, had to resort to shims, didn't even make good paperweights. I spent a bit more and got, Eagle Visions, nice, precision made, work perfectly, worth every penny.
Never had a problem with mine. but i don't have an FX pcp, I had them on ATHLON BTR GEN2 8-34x56 mounted on a 340 fpe pcp and then 257 Texan, 308 Texan and now just sits in the box because I went digital.
For the FX No-Limit adjustable scope rings, here are the recommended torque specifications: (30mm tube)

  • Base screws (for dovetail mounts on air rifles/rimfires): 35 in-lbs
  • Base screws (for Weaver/Picatinny mounts): 45 in-lbs
  • Height/angle adjustment screw: 35 in-lbs
  • Ring cap screws: Follow the scope manufacturer's specs—Vortex recommends 13-18 in-lbs, but 15 in-lbs is a common standard.
One thing to watch out for—if your rifle has a rounded receiver, these mounts might not seat properly, which could lead to breakage when torquing down. Always double-check the fit before tightening.

30-Yard Challenge

Perhaps the guys shooting USARB, National Benchrest League N50, Extreme Benchrest/EBR, BR UK, UK Benchrest, etc… all need the larger .224 scoring plug…

… cause they’re not as good as our guys shooting our 30 and 40 yard Challenges?

😉

You guys have been submitting some awesome scores recently!!

Keep getting that lead downrange!

How Good is Athlon's Warranty?

I had to send my Athlon Argos 10-40 target scope back to Athlon today. I bought it from Camera Land in November of 2024 and I was pretty happy with it but I had noticed the occasional need for a scope adjustment for no apparent reason. Today it just would not hold zero for more than a shot or two. I attached the target I was shooting. After it was apparent I had an issue, I started adjusting the scope on each target until I shot a 10. Took a few shots. I was checking various screws on the gun as I was doing this trying to find the issue. Finally before shooting the last two rows I switched to a much older Athlon Talos 6-24. The right hand target in the 10 block was used to establish zero. Then I shot the left target in the 10 block, both 9 block targets, the 11 block targets and then both 12 block targets. Until the last target all my shots with the zero'd Talos were 10s. The first shot on the right hand 12 target was a 9 so I shot again and got a 10. After I got it zero'd I did not touch the adjustments of the Talos, I didn't need to. So I'm pretty sure the problem in blocks 1-8 were not me or the gun.

To their credit, you do not need to ask Athlon for return authorization. They have a form on-line you fill out, print, and include with the scope. I sent them this target to help explain. I used Pirate Ship to ship it via UPS to the address on the return form. Hopefully I will get something from Athlon next week explaining what they are doing to remedy this situation. The only other scope I've returned was a Bug Buster. I had to get authorization which I did and I sent it to UTG as they requested and then I never heard from them again (despite requests). I'm hoping for much better from Athlon.

I'll let you know how it comes out.
