Airforce  Airforce 22 Condor 17 inch LW Barrel 39 gr at 1050 fps

Great to hear... I did similar with a .177 Condor that I was determined to make into a mini slugger. Had originally tried to use lapping compound to remove the choke and after about an hour of that just said 'piss on it' and chucked up the barrel, cut the choke off, recrowned and done. Still havent tested with a lot of slugs, but initial results were encouraging and my groups at 65 yards were about half the size of before.

Lol, I wondered how that turned out.

Lapping a barrel into performing is certainly a patience-requiring process.

Lane spacing

My favorite matches are the kind where the lanes are all random distances apart....where the match director specifically took advantage of a shade tree here or there for the lane marker. Or had a really cool landscape feature that they wanted to use.

Perfectly spaced out distances between shooters is for benchrest. And we do indeed have a ft club here in AZ that chose to go that route, out of convenience. They shoot from a concrete slab under a cover at an established range. All the lane markers are the same distance apart. Targets are all at 90 degrees to the firing line. No topography. No natural features. It's like a benchrest match, but from ft positions, and on steel. Envision an overzealous range officer barking orders and that's the kind of environment they're shooting field target from. Very vanilla, very sterile. Same thing every month. Not much ranging skill necessary once you knock a target or two down cuz you can eyeball down the line and pretty much know how far each target is. Any field target is fun, but those firing line type matches are harder to enjoy versus matches where the match director emphasizes variety and taking advantage of the natural landscape and topography to make it a unique experience.

30-Yard Challenge

My .22 scoring plug from Freeland’s measures exactly the same as Ricky’s:

.2215” - Scoring lip
.1970” - Flat part of long flange

View attachment 557958
FWIW - got out my calipers today

Ed, Ricky - I also got the same exact measurements as both of you with our current .224 30 Y Challenge Scoring plug. I.e., .221”

I also measured the N50 .22 cal scoring plug, and it is smaller at .2095” See pics.

I took out an old Pro Class N50 target whereby I incorrectly scored an ‘X’, just to illustrate how easy it is to make a mistake. If you zoom in closely on bull #10, you will see that with the plug I have some white space between the X dot and the scoring plug. It should be a ‘10’ and not a 10X!

Anyway, in the spirit of compliance and fairness, I’m totally ok if we change or keep the current smaller .22 scoring plug.

For this “informal semi competitive target challenge,” either .22 scoring plug is OK, but we should standardize on whatever is decided.

Tom

Gauntlet SL30 Barrel Replacement

I’m in need of a replacement barrel for my Gauntlet SL30. Had everything set up ready to polish the barrel to get rid of a few slight rough spots. Then made a grave error and didn’t double check the grit of paper I had used. Instead of 3500 I grabbed 2500. While polishing I thought “wow this is super fast”….. then it hit me. I unwrapped the paper and saw the grit and about threw up. I cleaned it, put some polishing paste on a few mops and got it smooth but there’s barely any rifleing left. Both pellets and slugs go off in every direction. I was shooting almost same hole groups at 50 yards and now it’s ‘can it hit a 8” target at all’. I put another 50-60 pellets through it trying to get some lead in it but no improvement.

I called Umarex and they do not have any replacement barrels available and have no plans to order more.
Anyone know where I could I get a barrel to replace this one?

Thanks in advance!
@thammer has what you need!

N/A  Who makes the quietest gun out of the box?

Lane spacing

I am building a field target corse at the local gun range. It will be open to the public next week.
I started to lay out the lanes and the area has a nice small grove perfectly suited to field target. It’s about 40 yards wide 70+ yards deep. To go wider is a little more work .
Here is the question. Should l build it with 4 or 5 lanes ?

A. 5 lanes with 2 targets per lane?
B. 4 lanes slightly further apart with 3 targets per lane ?
C. 5 lanes with 3 targets per lane?
The difference is three feet apart or five feet apart.
I kinda like 4 lanes with 3 targets I have 12 targets already .
Plus I don’t expect a huge crowd and we can always expand later.
But that’s a bit of work.

I burned up my weed wacker and still have to cut the lanes.

RTI  RTI Mora just keeps getting better.

Im strictly a bench shooter so slugs are not anything I've experimented with. As for pellets, my tune began at 110 bar on the reg with the valve adjuster 1/4 turn from fully closed. Ideally I was aiming for 970 fps with the 29.5 AEA pellets. The results were excellent but even so someone recommended I try 1030 fps. Well that speed too is yielded excellent results.

My tuning philosophy for pellets is pretty much the exact inverse of what most guys use to tune slugs. I believe in a short sharp blast of air to get the pellet out of the barrel with the absolute minimum amount of trailing air. This minimizes the vortices that cause drag and pull the pellet offline. So what does that mean? It means a higher reg pressure and a very short dwell time for the valve.
My valve (same 600mm .25) was half open when I got it and I started tuning it for 37 grain zans.
I ended up with 937 fps (120 bar) and my valve seems almost closed now as I was going for the same results I guess. Short blast for me means more shots but I like your explanation as a better reason for doing it.
After reading your posts and watching airgun advisor, I ordered a bunch of the same pellets and as well, my buddy is shooting those same pellets in his 600mm .25 with great results at 50.
I would have never thought pellet at those speeds would be accurate especially at those distances.

How Good is Athlon's Warranty?

I don’t think they have the capability of repairs, so they just verify the issue and replace it with a new one. That’s all fine and good if your scope is still in production, but in my case, mine was not. They sent me a completely random scope in a similar price range that was absolutely no use to me, so I sold it as new and got my money back. That was probably five years ago and I just now bought my second Athlon scope. It was a good value and serves my purposes, so I hope it holds up.

New GX filter is coming out!

Any news about the new separator?
Mine (and I believe others that have ordered) says it will be here next week. We will see…I’m a bit skeptical on delivery time on anything on Amazon that shows that far out from the order. Hope they are actually here in the US. Will definitely report back when I get mine.

The slug game is a head scratcher. Unexpectd results sometimes, as to rifling/choke/twist rate/speed etc. Seems the only way to find the magic recipe is to keep trying various combinations. Congrats on finding slug joy, it's usually a long, arduous, and EXPENSIVE journey to get there.
