Magpul bipod - squeaky and unstable

Back when they first came out with it, I heard negative reviews of the Magpul bipods. I don't recall what the problems were. But I decided I would not get one.

I've always been happy with my Harris bipods. Never a problem.

Not related other than it's Magpul... back when they came out with Magpul Glock magazines, I bought five of them for my Glock 19. They were about $5 cheaper than factory Glock mags. Mind you.... I had plenty of mags, but I thought I'd give these a try and use them at the range. Hoo-boy. Every single one of the five Magpul Glock mags I bought turned my otherwise INFALLIBLE Gen 2 Glock 19 into a jam-o-matic. Multiple failures to feed on a single full load of the magazine. And it was all five of them. For what it's worth! :)
I have had a cheap one in the past; it's like night and day cheap VS Harris. I have a better idea

Tuning  Regulator pressure VS Hammer Spring tension

Apologies for bringing up an oldie, but a great ttuning thread imo.

I have a thought for conversation...,My .22 zelos likes 870 fps for the 18.13 pellets. I have gotten there bumping up the reg, and backing off he h.s., and vice versa with the same group sizes. What are your thoughts.

My set up with...
1. Higher reg psi, and less hammer spring feels ,and sounds sluggish compared to...

2. Lower reg. and up the hammer spring? Seems snappiier, and quiet.

let's leave shot count, sd and es at the proverbial door for now. I am more interested in finding if your rig groups better with a higher reg.?, or more H.S. Tension to get to the same fps?

Thanks for your ideas....
Gerry

“ I am more interested in finding if your rig groups better with a higher reg.?, or more H.S. Tension to get to the same fps?”

Following here……

I’m equally interested in others answering this question. Essentially, your question is getting at achieving better accuracy with adjusting for higher reg pressure and increasing HS.

FWIW - I participate in a regular 30-40y informal AGN target challenge. Although I have shot some really good scores with rifles (outdoors with wind at an open range) at lower velocities in the 800-830 fps range; I find that turning my HS up and increasing velocity has been yielding excellent accuracy and scores, especially at 30 and 40 yards.

Three examples: Taipan vet2 shooting AEA 21.9 at 910-930 fps range with tweaking Speed Dialer only at 135 BAR set point. RAW HM1000x shooting JTS 22.07g at 990 fps range with reg at 150 BAR. FX Royale .22 with JSB 20.83g lights at 880 fps and 150 BAR set point.

These three rifles consistently out shoot my other lower velocity, efficiently tuned rifles for both accuracy and scoring purposes.

Events  IFTA monthly report

This is the Iowa Field Target Association monthly report for July 2025.

The next field target competition with the Iowa Filed Target Association will be held Sunday August 24, 2025 starting at 1:00 pm.

At the West Liberty Gun Club.

The Facebook group now has 46 members.

Thank you, to all the people that are making this happen.

A lot has happened at the airgun range this month. There are now five field target lanes we can lay out in a wooded setting and a 75 yard plus benchrest lane. In addition to the four lane practice course with a sight in lane that is open and set up for club use seven days a week.

The field target lanes has been expanded to five lanes. One lane for sight in. And there are twelve reactive targets permanently set up in four lanes for anyone to use when the range is open or during public hours.

In addition there is now a 75 yards benchrest lane West of the field target course. This is also the sight in range for doing work with sights and scopes.

The weather is still hot. Sun screen / bug spray and pop up tent are still good to have. Definitely need a hat. And light weight long pants and shirt keeps the flys away. I go to the range at 8:00 am and shoot for an hour or so every Saturday and Sunday if anyone wants to join me.

The airgun range is open to the public and club members. The sight in range is set with permanent markers and you can move your own targets in that area.

There are animal silhouettes with open kill zones set in the field target lanes. These are operated by shooting the lower paddle then the upper kill zones is reset. Feel free to move the animal targets. Don’t push them in to the ground by the silhouette. It will bend or cut you. Hold the base and just push the spike into the ground. Make sure the paddles work.

Eye and ear protection are required at all time and a hat is strongly recommended at the range. Mosquitoes are pretty thick back in the wooded section so bring some spray.

If you live in the West Liberty Iowa area. And you want to shoot airguns or Airgun Field Target or bench rest. . Please consider joining the West Liberty Gun Club.

If you join the West Liberty Gun club you can use the Airgun range, pistol bays, 100 yard range and trap corse anytime the range is open. Unless there is a competition.

Public hours are Saturday and Sunday 1-5 pm.

CHECK THE SCHEDULE!

Public access is sometimes suspended during large competition events.

Report to the range officer building before going to the range.

Club members can shoot from 8am - dusk seven days a week. I will be at the range Saturday mornings.

If you are interested in getting together for Saturday or Sunday morning shooting matches . PM me or Email.

I will provide more details as things progress.

N/A  Ok serious off the wall question

I would tell FX they can’t use legos to design the main rifle, cut the number of screws in half, only 13 o-rings and a solid barrel. I then wait at the factory gates for 50 years.
Why does everyone want a solid barrel when their barrels win competitions lol if tuned in correctly the barrel works

N/A  Ok serious off the wall question

one with substance.... thicker, hammer forged, etc... not a straw that needs a carbon fiber sleeve around it.... etc...
Yeah I get that part but their barrels are legit. Doesn't matter about the thickness their barrels win a lot of competitions. I would say try and thicken it for harmonics.

Well im out ...

Holy R9 batman.. yesterday it was 525$ or so, but this morning. Lol

Whats next a grand .. must not need my money anymore. Lol. Fools and there money are soon parted if these sell . I bet they claim tariffs thats just agreed on not set in law yet ..lol. Scamming you
Thats more than what I paid for my AEA 357 standard before the tariffs. I'll have to check the price now.

HW/Weihrauch  Ok Weihrauch Airgunsmiths, I need some advice... HW35 Barrel Latch Worn

I keep forgetting to check on that latch when I get home from the shop. I've got quite an assortment of gunsmith quality compression springs in varying sizes and strength. I'll find something with a little more resistance than the spring that's in there now and see if it corrects the issue. I'd love for it to be such a simple fix. I'm off tomorrow. I'll give it a go and report back here.
I want to thank everyone who chimed in. you guys are the best!!! (y)

Quietest, and most accurate

I prefer classic looking rifles over the modern chassis/bullpup/AR styles. I also need back yard friendly noise levels, and this might be the most important thing. It needs to be as QUIET as possible.

In my newbie opinion.... look no further than the Benjamin Marauder "Field & Target" (regulated) with Lothar barrel. Not that I'm biased or anything! But I did do my homework before buying. Mine:

Rti mora - under bottle rail is weak

I’m surprised to see you have issues with a bottle guard rail. I have a bottle guard rail on my Mora and it’s rock solid…absolutely no give…pic attached. I installed a picatinny bipod rail and setup a heavy duty Accutac bipod….very very solid setup!!!

So far, yours is apparently the exception. I commented on Joe Polanco's thread asking how he manages with it mentioning the issue I had and he also found his unusable. he replaced his with a modified swiss arca rail 14" to fix the issue.

30-Yard Challenge

Leaderboard Submission:
Date: 7/29/25
Target: 30-Challenge 197 14X
Rifle: Daystate Huntsman Regal (Huma reg installed)
Pellet: AEA 15.9g @ 812fps
Scope: Athlon Midas Tac FFP 6x24 @ 24X

I did some pellet testing with the Regal this morning: JSB 13.43g, JSB 14.35g, FX 15.9g and AEA 15.9g.

The Regal always does great with JSB/FX 15.89 and 18.13. During the testing I noted that the AEA was slightly better - especially less vertical dispersion.

I chronoed 40 shots with the AEA 15.9. All shots were between 810 and 814 fps - a 4 fps extreme spread. That's likely the reason for the very tight vertical.

So far the only AEA pellet that I haven't found to perform as well as JSB/FX or better is the .22 caliber 21.9g. Perhaps I'll try it at a few different velocities - mostly been at 900fps with various barrels with the 21.9s.

This 197 slightly betters my previous 196 15X with this rifle.

Other than 1B and 7A ( both 9’s ), you really don’t have any low placed shots, using the hours on a clock as a unit of measure. An ES of 4 puts a smile on my face.

Ironically, the AEA Center punch 21.9g is quickly becoming my .22 Taipan Vet 2’s favorite pellet. Have it flying at 910-915 fps, but coincidentally the other day I was testing at 925-930 range with the speed dialer, and it was really solid in windy conditions. This was done in my recent post for 30Y Masters.

I really wish Daystate would ‘get with the times’ and make their rifles easier to adjust reg and HS. For me, it’s time consuming and not a precise way to adjust in the current design.

Two examples: The speed dialer on the Vet is my favorite for tuning just HS. RAW is equally easy using a metric screw driver turning the HS ( without a set screw ) with a nice cut out in the stock to tweak velocities. Many other brands have recognized the benefit of making more tunable guns, so should DS.

I realize it’s a Sporter designed for the UK, Scottish, Ireland and other European markets for pesting and small game hunting, but many owners also like target shooting and FT.

Anyway, yours is doing great with the 15.89g pellets at 810 fps. My Revere .22 is at 870 fps with the 15.89 and it has not been able to shoot these high 195+ scores.

I know, it’s the Indian not the arrow. 😀

I noticed the price increase at AOA the other day, Holy Cow!

Athlon Ares ETR UHG 3-18x50 34 MM Mrad in FFP with IR

Athlon continues to impress me for what it makes at the price point it gives us.
I continue my quest (obsession) to find the worlds greatest HFT scope for ranging at 16X.
this scope will be limited to 15x as marked for HFT.
I am currently waiting on a 6" round parallax wheel for this scope, but my initial workup on the bench has me totally impressed with the I.Q.
Stay tuned for pics and further details.

Quietest, and most accurate

Daystate Revere. It is a classic, sporter style design, accurate, good trigger, as quiet as most with a moderator. It might cost more than you want, but if you like the sport, you will have a long-lasting, high quality rifle. If you decide it's not for you, sell it and take your loss as the cost of giving it a try, no free lunches. As usual, Motorhead is absolutely on point regarding the Daystate electronic rifles. I have a Red Wolf and, depending on power level selected, it is truly quiet. That said, I'm not sure that an electronic rifle is the best way to begin, as they are different in set up and maintenance. My Red Wolf may be the most accurate air rifle I have owned, but I seem to never shoot it, and may sell it. It has been a totally reliable platform, but it's just different. There are many good choices for you, but so much depends on personal preference, recommendations are difficult.

N/A  Ok serious off the wall question

I would head to RTI’s factory and say let’s build a traditional carbine rifle. Tube air tank, big enough plenum, their balance valve, 380-400mm barrel, full active shroud, laminate and walnut stock, about 36” OAL, quiet, powerful and no mod necessary. When you remove the action from the stock there are cut out areas where you can add lead or tungsten slugs to add as much weight as you want. You can purchase the slugs from your RTI dealer. Then film all the airgun hunters doing backflips.

Oh, one last thing. The RPB barrel will be threaded into the receiver. None of this multi caliber crap. It creates weaknesses. If you want two calibers because you love the gun, put on your big boy pants and buy two guns.

RTI needs to see this set of requirements. These rifles would fly off the shelves with these features. 👍👍
