The Real Science of Airgun Suppressor Selection

Hey there airheads!

The other day we sent out an email talking about all the years of experience we’ve had working with airgunners around the world—chasing down the best sound suppression possible in the airgun game. We got some great responses back, and thought, why not bring the conversation here to Airgun Nation and keep it going?

One of the big topics that came up was how air volume and internal design, whether it’s a monocore or traditional baffle stack, actually affect the shot report. Sure, there are computer models that can predict airflow and potential decibel reduction, but the reality is airguns behave very differently than firearms. They have their own quirks in how large volumes of air get expelled and how we tame that sound. Even though DonnyFL and airgun suppressors in general have been around for a while now, the science of airgun silence is still very much evolving.

When Donny first started this company, it was a lot of good old-fashioned trial and error. Just the other day, Yolanda was reminiscing about those early days, how she and Donny would stand out in the field doing A/B tests, swapping moderators back and forth, and listening closely to the differences in tone and volume. No meters. No fancy charts. Just honest, real-world feedback about what our ears told us worked best.

Over time, we’ve added sound meters and other R&D tools to the process, but we’ve learned something important: feedback from real shooters still matters more than any number on a screen. A meter might tell you it’s “quieter,” but your ears can reveal something completely different, especially downrange.

So how do you choose the right suppressor? It’s not as simple as picking the “quietest” one on the list. Caliber and power tuning matter, a hot-rodded .22 PCP can be just as loud, or louder, than a .22LR rimfire. Barrel system design plays a role too. Shorter barrels often have a sharper, louder report, while longer barrels can be sensitive to weight on the muzzle and may not play nicely with a heavy suppressor.

Then there’s how you actually use your rifle. In competition, suppression might not be the top priority, you might be more focused on how a suppressor can influence barrel harmonics. On the other hand, if you’re pesting in your backyard or working in a sound-sensitive area, maximum suppression becomes a must-have.

The quick and dirty rule is that more internal volume usually means better airgun suppression. But that’s oversimplifying it. Tone matters just as much, and in some cases, going with a really long moderator may hurt the balance or handling of your rifle.
We’re working on a comprehensive air rifle suppressor selection guide to help make those decisions easier. In the meantime, we want to hear from you. The best part about the DonnyFL community has always been the feedback we get from real shooters. We started out as a grassroots company right here in the online forums, and that community-first approach will always be part of who we are.

So, how do you judge airgun suppressor effectiveness? Is it tone, volume, group size, or a mix of everything? Got a favorite testing method you trust? Let’s make this thread a go-to resource for anyone looking to get the most out of their airgun sound suppression. Also, check out our full lineup of airgun moderators and air rifle suppressors!

You pretty much hit the main points.
As a consumer, I believe education would help one make decisions based on all those variables you mentioned.
Perhaps you can provide "tune specific" iterations, or kits as accessories to modify existing models to match current tunes.
For example, I just acquired a .25 GK1 and even your Shogun did not moderate it enough for my back yard. However, once I tuned it (WAY down), the Tatsu worked great.
So, education for the masses, available iterations, and hardware to accommodate needs.
Thanks for communicating!

Kalibrgun  Kalibrgun Snipe 2 issue

I recently (3 weeks ago) bought a Snipe 2 and yesterday while at the range I heard a leak near the end of the day. I'm assuming I may of blown a O-ring somewhere near the breach. But I can not find one resource online that shows you how to take it apart so I can even do basic repairs. Does anyone know where one could find resources for basic repairs on the Snipe 2?

I’m On AMission

I kill 2-3 squirrels a day. That’s over, now. When I caught one with my garden tomato in its mouth that was it. I’m on a vendetta. Yesterday, I sat on my porch for several hours and killed over 20. Today, eight. Don’t mess with papa’s tomatoes. I’m a squirrel serial killer. I feel no remorse.
Any pics? What gun setup and caliber/projectile ?

What springer did you shoot today?

When the temp finally dropped to 90 this evening I went out and shot my FWB 124. They’re such sweet guns. Stood at 20 yards and just wore a couple targets out after I remembered how it likes to be held. Really enjoying the Hawke 2 x 7 scope. Might end up with a few more.
I don’t know how you guys do it. 98F here today with a breeze. Nasty. That’s small potatoes. We have wild fires near by. Crow

I celebrate every day.

Got my first airgun in 1995, my dad's old American classic rear cocker 1377

My neighbor friends growing up had bb guns and I wanted one badly.

My dad bought me a new benjamin 392 shortly after that I had to pump in a hilarious way as an 10 year old kid.

I still have 16 of the 17 airguns I've ever had. The 17th lost its nitro piston(and I didn't like it) . 30 years later I celebrate that 1995 Christmas EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Okay update:

I’ve got a bunch of griffins, Sonny’s slugs and heavier Franco’s coming to go with the Patriot Javelins. So I’ll be trying dish base slugs in 56gr, 60gr, 65gr and 70gr. Boat tails in 59gr, 60gr, 61gr, 65gr, 75gr and 78gr. It will 100% shoot the 78s between 810-830 like a gauntlet. But I like to shoot faster because I like the flatter trajectories. So if I had to guess it’s gonna end up somewhere between 60-65gr doing right around 900fps or more.

Keep in mind I’m not going for a max power tune. My goal is the max power/accuracy I can make and get at least one full mag, so 22 shots. Do I need 22 shots at 115-125fpe? Not really. But dang it feels pretty good dumping a mag of big fat boattails that everyone else has to single load.

Yall this gun is an absolute beast… sorry I’ve been distracted but I’m still playing with it haha. I keep feeding her heavier slugs and she keeps spitting them out with heat haha…

Optical zero

I dialed my Hawke adjustable zoom scope to "optical zero" then reattached it to the rifle and was disappointed to see that the scope was way off. So, I adjusted the scope to print where I wanted the bullet to go, but in the end, both elevation and windage were almost at their extreme limits as before.
Am I doing this wrong?
@EricG.
When you optically zeroed your scope did you take both windage and elevation to their extreme position for counting clicks/revolutions back to center at the same time?
Or did you perform the operation on one and then the other?
It is important to do them separately (one at a time) or the internals are likely to misalign.

If you took them to extreme up or down and left or right, go back and repeat the process slowly and individually

Hope this helps

Youtube channel critique ideas

So I am thinking about starting a youtube channel about my journey growing into the world of air rifles. Like things I have learned that I wish I knew earlier and reviews from someone who isn't a insider. One of the things that has always rubbed me kind of wrong is watching review videos where the camera is facing only their face the entire time and doesn't actually show the distance. So I am messing around with the format and placement and wanted the opinion of actual shooters. When I am doing actual reviews I plan on shooting from a table with a lead sled to give the air rifle the best possible chance. But this is more, is the layout of this shooting portion good or do you think I should change this? But other than this, what would you as a shooter like to see in a video that you really aren't seeing right now?

My assumption is these are California Ground Squirrels not tree squirrels. There are upteen-gazillion of them crawling around, and will someday take over the human race.
They are not tree/grey squirrels. There is a hunting season for Greys. Those I don’t kill

What Paper Target Did You Shoot Today

Well I haven’t been shooting for a while, getting the house ready to sell has been keeping me busy and I had to take my bench down and hide my target and stuff. So tonight I decided to shoot a few targets and I decided to sit and shoot off hand at 10 meters. I shot 3 groups of 5. This was my best group for the evening. Everything is back in hiding 😁

Head shot thread

Tell me your secret on how to tell, I shoot first and look after lol.
Hahaha out here in the desert I usually shoot the dummies that like to “prairie dog” on the rocks or sun themselves in trees… they usually have a bit of pair of nuts on them when I retrieve them… and not in their cheek pouches 😂😂

Set both the turrets back to their middle point
using a good set of rings center and level your scope
set a 30”x 30” paper target at 10 yards and take a shot at center bull
adjust your turrets windage to center
adjust your elevation turret to 2“ below the bull
move your target to 25-30 yards and shoot again making your final adjustments for your zero
note…. If you can’t get on paper at 10 yards after resetting turrets to their middle position you probably have a gun/ Barrel / rings and or /scope issues
