22cal Airgun for Wildboar Hunting!?

Hi guys
I recently bought a Stoeger Bullshark and would like to know if someone has experience with shooting hogs with a 22.cal Airgun
And if it would be managable what Pellets/Slugs would you recommend?
(At 50 yds i shoot 1cm groups)
I grew up on a farm. We raised beef & hogs. I have never shot wild hogs. I have shot lots of hogs & beef on the hoof for butchering w/ .22 shorts (hogs) & long rifle for the beef cows. Those distances were sometimes measured in feet ,but could be 15yrds. The energy from shorts would penetrate the hog's skull & (usually)
stop in the brain. The long rifles (solids) would penetrate into the shoulders (not good). Remember that a .22 airgun has significant low power compared to
a .22 rimfire short. I have a Bullshark in .22 and I have taken groundhog #3 of this season w/ it at 28yrds using 18+gr pellets . I needed 2 shots . I have taken
over 200 G-hogs w/ .22 caliber airguns at ranges up to 100yrds (slugs & pellets). BUT , I would not recommend any .22 caliber gun unless it was putting out 48-50 ftlb.s with a heavy ,hard slug, under 40yrd.s something the 'Shark can't do. Some folks have done it , for sure , I just think it all has to be perfect to do so.
Just my 2 cents. Enjoy the Bullshark.

Tuning  Taipan Compact .25 - lead free - sub 15 fpe

@MushroomPsyche @TimeRabbit

Have either of you tried lead free pellets in your Taipans and, if so, do they shoot well?

Since this would be primarily for inside the barn, I don't want to spread lead around if I miss.

Thanks,
-pg
Sorry but I have not tried the lead free pellets. For anything under 20 yards though, there's a good chance they will be accurate enough at those distances.

Other  Which 30 cal

I have a Challenger Pro 30 and I usually prefer shooting my Gauntlet 30. Even though the AEA has a wider range of adjustment.

The long barrel 30 is going to be pretty crazy shooting anything other than very heavy slugs unless you turn that thing down a lot.

The Guantlet 30 has perfect power for shooting 65 grain slugs.

Other  Air Pistol Recommendations

I'm new to PCP air gunning and the bug has bitten hard. I have two new rifles (FX Impact M4 and RAW HM1000x) and I'm having a blast with them.

That said, I really want to get an accurate, quality PCP Pistol to shoot at 10-25 yards.

Please provide recommendations for make, model and caliber.

THANKS!
The main thing i do not like about the GK1 is the magazine is not removeable, can't have a single shot tray and if the magazine jams or breaks your out of that gun for X weeks to get repaired .

Other  Just how much must I pay for "Accuracy" in a PCP gun?

If more people would concentrate on developing their marksmanship skills, they could keep costs down. Sorry, but you can’t buy bullseyes.

P.S. let me qualify that. If you have developed your skills to the point that you can’t go higher, then start shopping for a better gun. A newbie that buys the “best” gun (whatever that is),
and expects to win matches will likely be disappointed.

TJ barrel on Evol 3 circular indentations near muzzle…

That rough ring in the bore is the problem..The bore is pretty rough.. You could try hand lead lapping to remove the ring and rough spots with valve lapping compounnd starting at 120 grit.. My Lother Wather 34inch .510 barrel was horrible had a ring like yours 3/4 way down bore..I had to clean every 3 shots for any kind of accuracy.. I hand lead lapped with 120 grit valve lapping ,then240 grit sompound.. know that barrel shoots and cleans up.. The difference between production barrels and most custom match barrels are that match barrels are hand lead lapped after reaming the bore and again after rifleing.. Match barrels include krieger broughton Benchmark shieln Brux ect.. So you can try to work on rough barrel or buy another one.. I worked at ER Shaw barrels in Pittsburgh..I learned the basic barrel production process..
I may as well try. I have 400 and 600 grit here but I guess you’re right, that’s not good enough for something this deep. My only concern is that I’ll end up with a .23 bore at the muzzle if really get the rings out… like a reverse choke :)

TJ barrel on Evol 3 circular indentations near muzzle…

I personally don’t know what those features are. These fliers you described be could just as easily come from inconsistencies in the pellets or loose bits of lead working their way down the bore.
To me it looks like the way the choke is formed. Get something rougher than jb bore bright and hit that area for 20 to 30 strokes with the paste on a bore mop , clean then hit with bore bright for 30-40 strokes and see how it shoots. Also looks rough farther down and possibly has lead sticking
Not the pellets :) AEA are crazy consistent, I shot complete tins with my other rifles without a single flyer. The Evol throws 2-3 within 10 shots.

Seriously, look at the barrel, it’s obvious that it’s defective, these rings aren’t supposed to be there. I’ve never seen a barrel so screwed up and I’ve seen many :) it’s (supposed to be) a hammer forged CroMoly barrel and Tom polishes Evol barrels in addition. No way this is intentional/normal.

Airgun Technologies  30 Cal Uragan 2 or 3

Out of the box my U3 compact .22 was shooting low 900’s with 15.9’s and using a lot of air. One thing I have found out, the hammer spring screw will only allow one turn out before interfering with the stock if you need to tune down a bit. The interior of the stock needs to be recessed to prevent this. In my case, I needed two turns out on the HS screw and the stock would not go back on. The hammer spring screw interferes with the stock and it will not line up with the side holes to reinstall the stock. So I sanded about 1mm off the base of the hammer spring guide which gives the equivalent of one turn out, in addition to one physical turn out (2 total). The gun was wasting too much air. I adjusted it out just enough to see a 10fps drop and my full fill shot count nearly doubled from 36 to about 63 at 890’ish with 15.9gr pellets. I have not done anything to the reg yet but fps falls off at about 110-120bar. Accuracy is very good with AEA Center Punch 15.9 unsorted pellets. Attached is a 50yd bench rest target shot indoors.

30-Yard Challenge

Thanks, Ed. I don’t have the skill to tune a PCP to do what yours do. So I compensate by choosing guns that, at least theoretically, should shoot straight out of the box. And don’t require complete disassembly to change a hammer spring. That is intimidating. I give you due credit. If it’s any consolation, the Black Wolf is the first rifle that I bought new :).

HW/Weihrauch  Is This the HW30s’ Biggest Weakness?

@Xun - Those sights are fine and act like mine. I have a HW30 and a HW50 that I shoot with the iron sights. They work very well and the rifles are nice to shoot without a scope on it. I can hit cans consistently with them.

I suggest trying them out. I think you will be surprised at how well they work. My only complaint about the Weihrauch iron sights is that they cannot be set for close (10 meter) shooting. The closest I can get them to shoot is 20 yards on mine.

I like how simple but elegant they are with all the different combinations available. I think there are 64? combinations available with the front inserts and the four rear sight choices.

Try them out, you will be surprised at how well they work.

FWB  The 10 meter SSP pistol still exists

I bought a never used Hill pump from a member on the classifieds here and it arrived today. I figured if my ancient Shoebox ever dies I can at least shoot my 10 meter PCP pistol and rifle. My P8x was right at 125 bar and I swear it was at 200 bar with no sweat whatsoever in less than 2 minutes and the pump wasn’t even warm. The point of this post is we are all lamenting the passing of the SSP and it kind of still exists, you just carry the pump in the other hand. When I have more time I will put 50 shots down range and count the pumps to bring it back to 200 bar. I bet it’s less than one stroke per shot.
looking forward to this info as i have a Morini 162EI

Crosman pellets

If Crosman is switching the .22 Hollow Points to the Daisy design, I welcome it. I've bought them a few times since 2020 and each time they have grouped well in multiple rifles, and better than most Crosman HPs I've purchased over the last 10 years or so.

Example of a couple of 30 yard groups from a QB79 HPA conversion.

The last time I got a tin of Crosmans that would produce ragged holes was 2013.

And the Daisies are straight up wrecking balls for pest control. One recovered from a gray squirrel:

What do all of the notes mean on your various tins?

PCP then springer?

I can definitely see that. I can absolutely appreciate the simpler springers and the joy of knowing it's more skill than tech. Ive never had a quality springer so really don't even know what I'd be getting in to
I would say if you're planning on shorter distances 50 and under, a quality springer is the way to go especially if you're on a budget.

Omg Really? You gotta be kidding me. And I thought I had OCD. Seriously the amount of movement there pales in comparison to human ability to discern them. They're all like that and nobody ever had a problem with them. They're simple open sights if you want to micrometer precision get a set of match grade peeps and they'll cost more then the rifle. Most people scope these things anyway.

Good luck. Wait until the cocking arm starts grinding the compression tube. You'll have fits.
