New to PCP air guns, wish I came to this site sooner!

As said above. Buy a tank that is DOT certified or a shop won’t fill it. Very important. Majority of ones sold on Amazon and eBay aren’t. On eBay you can get acecare dot tanks. If buying used keep in mind they only have a 15 yr life for professional fills and have to be hydro tested every 5 years. So check the dates stamped on the tanks.
Thank you for the info!

What springer did you shoot today?

Really Crow? That wasn't the brightest idea. I'm surprised at you.

Oh I don't think you have enough hanging targets either 🤣

Love ya Dave
Ya, I deserve a toung trashing. Late in day, tired and lazy by that time. It was in back of buggy, too easy. Figured these guns don’t miss. Easily 8-10 inches of clearance. No way will I hit the can. First shot with the 601. Wasn’t prepared for that. Called myself a few good adjectives. Crow

USA made Crosman Destroyers?

I landed a part-time at a local gunshop and started this past Monday.

I was walking around the store to familiarize myself with where everything is located, and found our small (for now) airgun section. Currently we have 1 .22 cal pellet in stock - the Crosman 14.3 gr Destroyer. I've wanted to test these for a while now, so I bought a tin.

Once I got home, I saw the lid was painted - not a sticker, and on the packaging, it said "Made in the USA, with globally sourced materials." Isn't the painted lid the first giveaway of the USA made pellets (that plus the 'Made in USA on the packaging?).

Once I get my rifle back, I'm going to do an intense testing of the accuracy, and if they do well, I might buy out our supply.

Other  Thoughts about Slugs and Magazines

I enjoy modest power (below 50 fpe) airguns and pellets for most of my shooting but a strong curiosity about slugs has had me investing in a couple of PCPs specifically for them.

I'm trying to figure out what makes finding the right slug and getting consistent groups so elusive when the powder burner guys can buy any off the shelf ammunition (let's just call them "bullets") and expect reasonably good results.

In looking at the problem I strongly suspect that slugs face alignment challenges that bullets don't.

A bullet, mounted in its cartridge is accurately aligned to the case and seated to a standard depth so that when it's chambered it is in the optimal position (relative to the rifling) and orientation to be fired down the (unchoked) barrel. Bullets are typically quite long relative to their diameter which benefits them both in the bore and in flight. The huge amount of energy/pressure available has no problem forcing a tight fitting, well sealed bullet down the bore.

An airgun slug has no "support system" and must rely on the probe and the magazine to chamber it straight and position it relative to the rifling.

Considering that each brand and weight of slug has a different length, the type of the base (flat, dished or boat-tailed) and the design of the probe will affect how the slug seats in the breech relative to the rifling and transfer port. I think an adjustable probe might be useful to have.

The shape of the slug and it's length (short and pointy versus a long cylinder) would influence how easily it could be misaligned while being chambered.

Airgun bore size and consistency and finding the exact correct diameter of slug to achieve a good seal without excessive friction is an other variable to consider.

Then there's choked or unchoked barrels and rifling twist rate considerations... or some sort of compromise for PCPs that are pellet/slug dual purpose airguns.

After all the mechanical considerations there's the tuning for optimum velocity and harmonics.

Are we having fun yet? 🤪

So if we look at worst case and take a short pointed slug, abuse it in the magazine; mis-feed it so it engages the rifling cockeyed and compromises the sealing; fire it down the bore to be extruded through the choke and launch it into the world in a blast of over-powered turbulent air, are we really surprised that it takes the slug many yards of erratic flight to sort itself out?

But man, is it ever beautiful when we get everything right and stable flight and sub-MOA groups happen! 😍

Anyway, just food for thought. Please feel free to ignore me or to add you own theories.

Here is a link to a video about magazines mis-feeding pellets that probably applies to slugs as well.

Cheers!

Post Your Airgun Ammo Collection

I have about one third of Lewis's collection. But it I had started in .177 with JSB 8.44 in 4.52 I might have far less. 6 of my 7 guns prefers that pellet. My 300s might like the JSB in 7.33 a tiny bit better. AA in both 8.4 and 10.3 are just not quite as consistent but very close. Have not shot a lot of JTS but they show promise. Everything else does not measure up. This is after thousands of group at 20 meters and 50yds.

HW/Weihrauch  A little love for the 97K!

We have a group of about 15 guys. This is the most popular rifle. I must add the 3 of the 4 biggest winners all shoot TX200s including myself but I consider the two equal. Difference is the shooters. The thumbhole stock is popular with our guys as we shoot a few offhand targets along with the benchrest. They are good rifles for sure.

Hornets nest

Not my friend when they nested inside a tree holding up my backstop, three feet from my target stand you can see in picture. I've been unable to shoot at home for some time..
honey bees are always our friend.... their pollination feeds the planet. But no tree hugging here... just saying call a bee keeper as they are always looking to relocate honey bees.
