30-Yard Challenge

Leaderboard Submission:
Date: 7/29/25
Target: 30-Challenge 197 14X
Rifle: Daystate Huntsman Regal (Huma reg installed)
Pellet: AEA 15.9g @ 812fps
Scope: Athlon Midas Tac FFP 6x24 @ 24X

I did some pellet testing with the Regal this morning: JSB 13.43g, JSB 14.35g, FX 15.9g and AEA 15.9g.

The Regal always does great with JSB/FX 15.89 and 18.13. During the testing I noted that the AEA was slightly better - especially less vertical dispersion.

I chronoed 40 shots with the AEA 15.9. All shots were between 810 and 814 fps - a 4 fps extreme spread. That's likely the reason for the very tight vertical.

So far the only AEA pellet that I haven't found to perform as well as JSB/FX or better is the .22 caliber 21.9g. Perhaps I'll try it at a few different velocities - mostly been at 900fps with various barrels with the 21.9s.

This 197 slightly betters my previous 196 15X with this rifle.

Quietest, and most accurate

I've been shooting and hunting all my life, but never with airguns. Do you advise starting with a simple break barrel rifle, or jumping right into PCP with all the related paraphernalia?

Main use would be for general plinking and target shooting, marksmanship training, perhaps some small pest control and light hunting. I'm not a competitive shooter, but accuracy is important and would like to be able to consistently achieve 1" groups at 30 - 50 yards with practice. I prefer classic looking rifles over the modern chassis/bullpup/AR styles. I also need back yard friendly noise levels, and this might be the most important thing. It needs to be as QUIET as possible. Cost isn't the biggest concern, but is a factor. I know break barrels are simpler and cheaper. But what is the quietest and most accurate without making a huge commitment?

Air gun identification

I picked this up a while back as it was inexpensive, don't know much about it. its 177 caliber spring gun made in Shanghai China. That is the only markings on it. It has a very heavy wooden stock, with sling mounts on the side, simular to a military style.
Question is does anyone have any information on this gun it does shoot pretty well and has a super strong cocking spring.

RAW Rapid  LRT stock or chassis?

Laminate is my choice.

Front sling attachment is often questionable on bottle guns due to the thinness of the fore end. The stock pictured looks thicker and longer than my Boss for example. That along with the laminations should make stronger in the face of the stresses of a sling or a bipod. I always shoot with a sling when possible. Note the placement of the bipod on the other rifle suggesting that it is too flexible for a bipod or a sling further out.

Besides it looks better.

new guy to airguns

Now I'm thinking get a 'bottle' to bring to the range with me to top off. Haven't even touched the gun and already thinking of what more do I want (G).
In order to save steps, it might be worthwhile to try to estimate the amount of air/shooting that you need in a session. I found that a bottle wasn't large enough, so I switched to a 45-minute SCBA tank. Later, I discovered that the SCBA was more trouble to transport and to fill, than is my GX CS3 or my CS1 clone.

For the last couple of years, I have simply plugged the compressor into the power at the range and can fill as many times as needed. When I get home, no need to bother with refilling a tank. It's all part of calculating one's best balance of factors.

Tuning  Umarex M1A1 Thompson Repair

Yes, I thought about that also. The telescoping black plastic tubes got my attention. So I decided to compress the black tubes which exposed the sear in the gun after I removed one screw holding the tap cover, it slid forward after I pulled the trigger. After looking at it I started to think about where id the return spring? It must be in the larger tube. The Large tube is stationary, so I compressed the small tube and got a good look at the bolt release. There is a small round peg, probably just a stop, I was thinking how about a smaller spring in the small black tube as an additional buffer?
I do not know without thinking about it some more. What do you think?

I don’t think adding a spring will do it. I’d fish around to find what stops the bolt’s rearward travel and add a soft plastic stop. The bolt spring should push it forward and the Co2 should push it back, but what limits that rearward travel? Now, it’s possible that a heavier bolt might not travel back far enough to hit the frame. That would be ideal … if the Co2 has enough kick to reload but not enough to ram the bolt against the frame.

Air Arm S510 targeting rats again

Max , great video as always. I went to the barn this past Saturday & hung out throughout 3 separate T -Storms . Not figuring on much activity, 'cause I've taken 8-10 over the last month. I took two magazines (12 shots ea.) with me into the barn. Rats were spotted earlier in the day by the farmhand so I figured 24 shots would be plenty. As soon as I turned on the IR light I spotted eyes everywhere ! Long story short ,I missed a few but came away with 10 rats plus a couple mice in the bucket with several rats not retrieved because of extra messy conditions in the holding area.No time for pics as the rain slowed enough to toss the bucketful over into the pasture for the"cleanup crew" & get out of there just in time for the next storm dump ! I was using my Kral NP03 ,w/ a bottle/reg conversion .I emptied both mags ! It's tossing Hades 15.89gr.s at ~ 650fp.s at the current setting. My ranges are close to what you were just into. Also, several rats were just a bit larger than mice , so the next generation was coming out & about on their own.
Nicely done! Always bring enough ammo as you never know when you will need the extra shots. Good job tagging them rodents. I am hoping the rats will repopulate quickly so I can come back out to feed them some tiny .177 cal lead, lol.

I will go to the other farm for some outdoor and much larger rats action with my FX Impact MK2 or with my HW100T. Cheers.
