What keeps you shooting?

I like crows. There, I said it. They and many other bird species watch us and figure out if we intend to shoot them. Nuthatches here actually would fly closer to me when I start shooting, or even when I come outside with rifle in hand. I occasionally put peanuts in trees for them. Flycatchers and swallows also appear to know they can remain in the surrounding area when I practice. Maybe the sound of the shots even causes gnats and flies to swarm upward when I'm practicing. I would never try to hurt any birds except for one invasive species (collared dove).
I really love crows as a young boy I had a pair of pet crows and I thank they are the smartest bird. Charles

Resources  Field target is an arms race price test

I mark my parallax wheel with numbers. And I use a silver sharpie to pinpoint the distance. I plan to shoot deep into winter. We get -10 . I’m gonna use a gold sharpie at below 32 deg and silver sharpie up to 100 deg.
I have a thermometer on my shooting tote.
At Mass Rifle FT we shoot year round. Three is good attendendan ce for a winter shoot. Sometimes it five or six. Temps in the single digits aren't uncommon for three of those matches. It sucks. It's also fun as hell trying to figure out what not only your scope, but your rig is doing.

Our last winter match of the season there was a foot of snow on the ground. I was running lines and stomping down shooters boxes with my snow shoes.
Temps started around 8f at sight in. The thermostat slowly rose to 29 by the end of the match.

Vevor now makes a dual cylinder shoebox compressor! (Video inside)

It's got 2 reviews on Amazon and both say it's junk
well one of them is some foreign joker who thought he was gonna use it for breathing air (lol) and the other one.... who knows?

Not a very big sample size, is it? Forming an opinion off 2 Amazon reviews is completely illogical.

In any case if I run into any issues with it I will post them here for everyone to evaluate. So far I've filled my 90CI ninja tank a few times with it and no issue at all, even with the huge filter attached.

Chilling your tank before topping off

We need more compressors like the old Shoebox - it runs so much cooler that this is never an issue for me; I only lose a few bar on "cool down," mostly because the output air charge is under 100F. My cylinders never get above 85F, so the air will be hotter than that, but not by more than 15 degrees or so . . . so there is not a lot of "shrinkage" occurring. ;)

Part of the magic in it running so much cooler is that it really is a three stage compressor, but it has the first stage off loaded to a shop compressor. That allows the input air to the Shoebox to be back down at ambient, with all the heat from the first stage of compression already eliminated. So in the end it does much less actual compression than the all in one units. Add in that I get to fully "dry" my air before the high pressure compression with desiccant filters and it truly is a winning formula.

I really wish others would bring out an updated version . . .

EDgun  R5M series single shot trays

I had acquired a couple of these in 2019 from the AGN classifieds. The quality and craftsmanship were outstanding. They fit the gun like a glove and aesthetically complimented the lines of the R5M Matador series. It was a simple drop in loading method, a classic design and my personal favorite. There was no question, to me, that not only was its creator an artist with an eye for proportion but an accomplished shooter with a simplistic yet functional vision of what was needed.

Six years later, after a long distance move, unable to locate them I was beside myself. I looked everywhere twice and no Joy was to be found. Knowing they were gone, I tried to find a replacement, and not knowing who its creator was, was an issue. I knew the type of design I was looking for and that was all. Not long after my Google search began I got a hit which directed me to a thread posted on Airgun Nation. Dated March 3rd, 2019 posted by cj_86. Low and behold I had struck Gold! CJ was the artist I had been looking for and he is a long time, trusted member of AGN to boot!

A courteous P.M. was sent followed by a polite & gracious accommodating reply. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy! Replacement single shot trays on the way.

@cj_86 Thank you, thank you, thank you. A kind, thoughtful and generous soul “A true contributor to AGN”. Bless you Sir.

A special thank you to Michael Wendt, owner of Airgun Nation, for the wonderful forum which enabled this connection to happen.

30-Yard Challenge

Awesome card - 194 is an excellent score - good shooting!

Brocock/BRKs have posted excellent scores on these Challenges over the past few years.

Suggestion for next goal: see if you can shoot an entire (24 target) 30-Challenge card with no “8s” - all targets scored 9 or better.

Once you do that, move on to 30-Masters cards - trying for 190+

Darn 8's..but no 7's for me. That was killing me!
I will read up on the masters rules. I need to keep shooting the regular challenge so I can confirm this target was not just a fluke. I have more pellets coming for testing. Just like powder burners, I was ALWAYS testing the next "great idea".

I might need to sort pellets. I had 2 8's. I can't blame wind...I might have had a slight slip with the round bottle in my bag (I have a post in benchrest asking about a front flat fore-end attachment). I will try to search out the best way to sort pellets. I have too many hobbies....

Ft. Osage MO Air Rifle Match Results -July 2025

The Midwest Airgunners matches are usually held on the first Saturday of each month at the Fort Osage Muzzle Loaders Range, 1637 NW 550th Rd, Kingsville, MO. http://mocobps.com/FOML.htm View our Web Site for match information - http://sites.google.com/view/midwestairgunners

Shelleen posting for Brink

It was hot and humid for our July match but the wind wasn’t too bad, about 6-8 mph. We had a small turnout but everyone had a fun time. Not to be outdone by the 750 shot last month by Luke Gautheir in the Unlimited Class, the old guy, Mickeal Henderson Sr., shot a 750 this month in the Open Class.

I'm waiting on a shipment of the same slugs, but in .217. Perhaps they will perform a bit better. At 50yds, both CCI/40gr hp's and Wrench Chester
40gr PP performed comparably. At 100yds the CCI was amazingly better.
With rimfire air rifle you have to find what that barrel likes and then buy lots of that particular lot if it's 22 or whatever they do for slugs in Air rifle if you can buy a particular lot I don't know. I doubt it. Trying to find the perfect round slug ammo for a gun can get expensive. with air rifles harmonic plays a huge factor and you just gotta find that node where your barrel perform the best. It could be as little as 5 ft./s and the groups just shrink like we said earlier slugs and Air rifles can be very frustrating I bet. A lot of variables to try to control. But the best part of it is you're behind the trigger and having a good time regardless of the groups. It's called group therapy and I enjoy it immensely no matter what I'm shooting.

FX  My set up

Sweeeet for sure. I just want to say when it comes around to selling you might be better taking off the expensive upgrade attachments. For whatever reason when you sell as a package you get pennys on the dollar for the extras. If you really need to sell research a lot on pricing. It’s probably going to be worth less than you think if you haven’t been following the market. I don’t necessarily understand the lack of love for this platform but there seems to be. I have the wildcat version and it’s awesome. I don’t have the saber stuff but I have both 25 and 30 cal barrel setups for it and will be listing it shortly most likely. Probably for 1250 and would be a miracle to get that.
Yeah I get that but 1250 would be better than what I have now lol.

30-Yard Challenge

I shot another 30 yard challenge target today. I got better paper at 65 lbs and it worked in my printer. There was a slight cross wind, but I played the dead wind condition on most shots. I had my best groups last week in testing with the AEA 25.3 grain pellets. I shot a horrible target last week with them and wrote them off. I shot another 5 shot group and it was great, so I gave them a "shot" today. I am glad I did. I broke the 190 goal I had!!! New to me BRK Sniper Sahara .25/ Athlon Heras 15-60x56 AEA 25.3gr pellets at 870 fps. I used 60 power on the scope and played the mirage too. I re-ranged the target and I am closer to 32 yards..ohh well.

What should my next goal be???

Well I don't shoot slugs in Air rifles but I shoot a lot of 22LR at 100 yards in F Class. The vertical string tells me that it don't like that slug per se at that distance. Unless you had a really strong headwind or tailwind and that will affect that vertical string. But that could be slugs in an air. I'm just giving you what I find in my 22 rifles for competition. When I'm shooting a distance to see if a certain lot of ammo shoots good I don't mind the left to right dispersion because that could be due to wind but I don't like any vertical dispersion because that's not an accurate lot in my barrel. So you might have to tune it different. Some ammo shoots really great at 50 that falls apart at 100 and people can argue that if it shoots great at 50 it'll shoot great at 100 I don't think that's the case because I've seen it too many times. Also a lot of people get hung up on SD and ES and think their guns gonna shoot good because of low numbers not necessarily the case either. You just gotta shoot it at that distance that you're wanting to shoot out mostly see how it does. Ithis is all for 22 LR which I've done for years and I have no experience with slugs in air rifles. And if you're shooting off a bipod you could be loading it different on shots it could be different grip pressure different cheek pressure when you get behind the gun there's tons of variables. My advice is to get consistent trigger pull cheek weld pressure on the gun and see how it shoots. Some air rifles and other rifles like more pressure or less pressure into the shoulder stuff like that. Good luck it's fun shooting anyways.

Remember follow-through is important to especially in slower projectiles like in an air rifle so the more movement even after you squeeze the trigger just for a hair second can affect down range accuracy.
