30-Yard Challenge

Tom,
The reason I know that Crown likes the 4.52's better than the 4.54's is because of the extensive pellet testing I did right after I bought that rifle.

I shot 10 30-yd Challenge cards using pellets randomly chosen from three different tins of FX 13.4 gr pellets purchased from three different vendors (not on purpose - I was shopping around for the best deal). I weighed and measured the head of each pellet and put them in a 100 shot tray (numbered) so I could keep track of them. I then shot them with an SSL each at a single bull on the card, recording the velocity (kept the same tune). After shooting the whole card I would measure the POI of each shot and record. This gave me a ton of data to sort through and to simulate selecting only a certain head size or weight and see what my score would have been.
My conclusion was, for this rifle, there was a slight increase in the average score and a slightly smaller variation in score when I only selected the 4.52's (no matter the weight or velocity). I scored the target our usual way but also looked at vertical dispersion only (to try and eliminate wind as a variable). The 4.52's had a slightly smaller vertical dispersion also. To be honest, this didn't pass the statistical significance test at 95% confidence, but it was close.
This same thing did not happen in my other Crown with either .177 or .22 pellets. I found almost no difference (statistically not close at 95%) from sorting in any way. That was also true with my now long gone .177 Brocock Sniper and .22 and .25 FX King.

My current batch of FX 13.4 gr trash cans from Utah Airguns came with a sticker on the back saying it was 4.52. I have a Pellet Gager set (4.53, 4.52, and 4.51) that lets me check 48 pellets at a time. I use that to see if the first tin in the group gives me good results, then just pull randomly. For FT, I put then in a pellet tray I 3d printed with the skirts up so I can do a visual check to make sure none are badly damaged.

It is amazing what you can do with evenings when you don't watch TV and you are not grading homework, lab reports or tests!

Cheers,
Greg
Greg, you’re a better man than most. My brain hurts thinking of the extensive testing you did, but we all benefit from your research and testing results.

My FX Trash Cans are 4.52mm 🤗🤗🤗

btw, what speed does your Crown like for 10.3g?

FT & JSB 13.43's?

You are still limited to 20 fpe regardless of the power capabilities of your rifle. If you use 13.4 gr pellets, you are limited to 805 fps. 10.3 or 8.4 a lot higher with flatter trajectory. It’s a matter of choice depending on your rifle and your marksmanship skills. Besides, who cares as long as the target falls?
815 fps is still within range but we can bump the 10.3's up to 915 ish and the 10.65's to something close to that.
I shoot the pellet my barrel prefers meaning the least amount of flyers. My Thomas likes the 13.4 exacts, my Redwolf is all about the 13.4 R/D. My Steyr HFT LG110 is a 10.3 kinda rig... My Crosman challenger is a 10.65 Benjamin platform... and the list continues. So much depends on the Indian and the arrow finding each others sweet spot.

HATSAN SAD

Do you know this guy personally? Do you know the whole story? It’s very tricky to take sides on the internet. People generally only tell or show you part of the story. Ratzy has them on speed dial and Hatsan is outperforming FX-USA when that warehouse was running. So?
Sounds like you like Hatsan a lot do you know them personally.? Do you work for them. Did you read Bramezy's reply. I'm trying to help people learn here. That's fine if you don't like that.
Leave me alone ok I'm tired of you defending Hatsan , and you banging head against me .

''Member Classifieds" section suggestion.... what is the group thought?

So I gave the filter a try. It would seem you cannot filter just air guns only. You have to pick one of 22 categories. And you can only pick one category. There are four categories for "airguns".

PCP rifle
PCP pistol
Traditional rifle
Traditional pistol

To do just a search for air guns, I would have to do 4 separate searches. Four separate categories. It would be wonderful if you could pick more than one category, but I was unable to do so.

In addition the results are not chronological, regardless of the ascending or descending option.

Sometimes simple is easy.
Or just click on white descriptor like "PCP Rifle" and only those tags will show.

HATSAN SAD

You are very lucky. I had to file a BBB complaint as after 30 days of no contact and not answering emails or their phones. Then they took another several weeks after that. I vowed to never support that company again.
And two of my Hatsan semiauto rifles both work with moderators attached. Of course I fine tuned the hammer spring, return spring and regulator pressure to get there. I rarely get a failure to index the next round.

My Invader I broke.
My Sortie Tact does not work with a moderator but otherwise is perfectly reliable.

They are heavy (and I made them heavier) and their triggers are abysmal. I dont shoot them much, too many new baubles to grab my attention. But I learned how PCP work because they are imperfect.

Daystate  Why is the Daystate Blackwolf scope mount different front and back?

I didn't, started it first to see if there is something specific about the rear mount. Then after put a note on the Owners Thread to see what other people measure on their rail. Check the dates and it would have been clear chronologically.
Oh, okay, I wasn't paying that close attention to the dates. Thanks for the explanation!

357 Western rattler

Thanks for the tips. I just picked up one of these in .357 and was looking for some ammo suggestions to start with.
Try a few slug weights from Nielson Specialty Ammo. And try the high arc hunter 178 gr. Just get a single box of each until you find out what it likes. JSB 81 gr pellets for plinking fun.

Field Target is an arms race.

I dont know that 55 only groupings are (entirely) predictive here. While you're considering the maximum distance, you're not really considering KZ size...at least in the way that every 55 yard shot is at least 1.5".

Much of the rifle's TRUE grouping accuracy is going to be how many times you knock down sub-1" targets at or near their maximum extremes.

Looking DIFTA's upcoming match: https://www.airgunnation.com/threads/difta-md-ft-match-saturday-2-august-2025.1335856/

That's 5 targets, 10 shots out of 60 at 1/2 inch or less. I dont care what the close distance troyer rating is...that 3/8" gives no wiggle room for a flyer.

I'm not saying EVERY rifle is gonna group 1.5 or so at 50y, I will say getting X out of 10 inside 1/2" outside-to-outside groups is equally as relevant. What that "X" is to be considered FT capable is obviously up for debate.
The groupings overall diameter at 55 yards IS what matters when comparing in this particular way to other platforms
A particular KZ size is not necessary to see how tight or how loose any particular gun can group at a specific distance, which in this case is the Field Target max range of 55 yards.
Many guns groupings begin to open up after 30 plus yards...
When the 55 yard targets are brought in and measured, if the group fits within a (X) diameter, then you can assume it is capable of putting (X#) of rounds in a certain size KZ at a certain distance, simple correlation.
The reason for 10 shots is to get a bigger aka better sampling, which may also demonstrate that some guns in a certain price range may produce more flyers than others in a more expensive price range.
shooting from a bench and also using clicks rather than just holdovers will take more human error out of the equation so we can have a better baseline... obviously we can't control all the factors but this is pretty straight forward.

Are glass optics becoming obsolete?

I have witnessed the shift from old technology to new technology several times in my lifetime. I started my working life (after service) working in a factory that used electronic circuits to get 8 phone lines from one copper pair of wires. The economics was that the electronic circuits were cheaper than the copper wire. The short phone lines were still cheaper for copper. When I started the “proving point” was 5000 feet, within a couple of years it was 2000 feet.
There have been many other items buried under new technology.
Bamboo cane fishing poles, wooden pencils vs plastic ones. I can’t even imagine what it was like for an accountant who tried to convince the owner of a construction company that it would save money to equip workers with power tools.
In the 1970’s I saw whole towns out of work when the textile mills moved off-shore, then the garment industries followed. There are thousands more examples. You won’t find many slide rules for sale these days.
It will happen.

45 years as an Engineer in Silicon Valley, I've seen a couple technological shifts.

But for digital to replace glass currently requires replacing the mk1 eyeball or direct neural interface.

You would have to pack as close to as many pixels in a scope display as the 120,000,000 cones and rods in each eye.

Optics  SOLD WTS: Vector Optics Minotaur Gen II 12-60x60 scope

I am selling a like-new Minotaur Gen II 12-60x60 MFL scope, model SCOL-40.
Price $180 delivered to CONUS. (I paid a sale price $272 delivered. List is $499. Current price is $399)

I originally purchased this model from Optics Planet last December. It didn't arrive until February, but I wasn't pleased with the optical clarity at 60x magnification which is where I needed to use it all the time. (It was fine at lower magnifications). The Minotaur at 60x wasn't as good as my Sightron at 50x and I was hoping the new scope would get me the same sharpness with an extra 10x. I contacted Vector Optics who replaced the scope this month with the one I'm offering here. It's optical clarity is serviceable at max magnification but still not as good as my Sightron.

This scope has been out of the box only to check its clarity at 60x. It has not been put into any rings. No marks or scratches. So you are getting a nearly new-in-box item. (The scope comes with 34mm rings). In the original double-boxed packaging from Vector Optics.

Have you found that “ One Airgun”?

Not yet I have over 100+ and enjoy almost all of them, however the HW rifles are some of my favorite, however lower priced guns can be a lot of fun! In fact I got a new one today and need to mount a scope and wait until the temp drops below 95. Charles

And I have had just fine Service from Hatsan. Email, phone call didn't matter. Specifically Kadden was without question knowledgeable and helpful.

I lost a small spring, 3 days later I had a new one. Got a little aggressive and broke a gun, didn't have the part in stock, took it off a gun for free. Needed breech oring, 5 in the mail. Had a loose barrel bushing in my Barrage that bent the connecting rod (long after Warranty) new connecting rod.
Wow. That's great I'm glad to hear that
I gave your reply a like as you know I have a lot of respect for you. I'm really glad to hear a positive thing about Hatsan. If you get a chance go to Midway USA and read the review ( The only one) under Hatsan Sniper Factor Long. It's why I put this post up I've heard , so many complain about the bad customer service of them not to mention the lack of quality control , and bad products.

RTI  Mora .25 probe O-ring size

Just an FYI, the exploded drawing on RTI’s website does not list an O-ring size for the pellet probe. I emailed them and Rok promptly replied with 1.5 x 3.5 Buna 70 is the correct one. They are VERY good at responding to questions. They are an awesome company to work with and equally great guns to shoot as well! Even though they are on the other size of the globe, I’d highly recommend them to anyone Looking for a quality and accurate gun. Thanks again Rok.
