Other  thoughts on "tactical" vs traditional rifle

The only beef I really have is that they go so far out of their way to make a gun look tactical that it no longer has anything to do w actual function. And as durability goes there is nothing rugged about air guns...especially in comparison to the real thing. So yeah, it's often down to just looks.

Anyone who's actually humped a M16 around for any length of time will probably opt out of the tactical look. Just sayin
Those who “humped” any AR or M anything are precisely those who might/may appreciate the attributes of a tactical rig… There’s a reason the Garand went the way of the Dodo. Tactical can be very practical for many folks. The ergos fit a wide variety of body types. Not an “end all, be all” but certainly a very important feature of tactical arms…

Ring prices

Mechanically clamping a tube to a receiver is hardly rocket science, so it's pretty hard to screw that up.
And there it is.
You not have to save up to buy scope rings.

18 in lbs on the scope, 30 in lbs on the receiver (usually) and the scope never moves. I've got $15 cantilever on my AEA Terminator, an absolute beast, and at most a few clicks due to environment. Scope never moves.

I don't have a gun where any ring causes issues. Not one, never have. Well, other than one I shimmed for elevation.

If they break, you slap on your spare rings, resight, back to what you were doing. Because like orings, fittings, screws etc, rings belong in your spares. But mine never break.

Most I have ever spent is 29.95 for Westhunter Adjustable Rings. Some rings have been $4.

Omega 75 cu. ft. bleed valve leak

Did the gauge have to be removed to get the button out?
Yes, the guage does have to be removed.

I just got this leak and had to replace the o-rings. I also polished the spring end that constantly passes through both o rings. I lubed the o-rings with a light coat of silicone grease. The bleed button is noticeably easier to release after the job.

N50 at 100 “In The Rings” Slug Challenge

Most of the CF and RF shooters are intimidated by the cost of the AG hobby.
Yet they drop $5-15K on unlimited RF rigs then they are forever chasing ammo. Makes me scratch my head …

Not to divert, awesome accomplishment Mike! I’m in awel not only of your guns but also in your talent to shoot them.

JSB or Crosman?

This is a bit of an odd situation but I am honestly trying to decide whether I want to shoot JSB 18.1 grain or Crosman 14.3 grain pellets from my new-to-me Bullshark 22. I started shooting the Crosmans early when I was trying to get the regulator working just because they are cheap. But I noticed they were grouping pretty well. So I tried a 30 yard challenge target with them and I think it was a 194. I shot a 193 with them this evening in 10 mph winds. Earlier today I shot a 195 with the JSBs and I shot a 198 with the JSBs a couple weeks ago so I think they shoot better. But is maybe another 3-4 points worth roughly double the pellet cost? The Crosmans are flying about 925 and the JSBs about 875 fps. The tune was really selected for the JSBs, it just happens to work well with the Crosmans. It is even possible I could get a little more out of the Crosmans by sorting them and tweaking the tune.

I need to at least test some of the new Spanish Crosmans to make sure it likes them too but if it does, what would you do? I could also test FX 18.1 and they will probably shoot like the JSBs but they cost almost as much too. I kind of like having a gun set up for cheap pellets even though it may not be my best target shooter.

What would you do?
It depends on your shooting needs.

Are you chasing precision and what's your shooting style?

I personally feel as though I need to be the weak link in any shooting activity...not my gun. So am willing to pay the marginal difference to have my gun performing at it's best if more expensive pellets is all it takes.

Other  thoughts on "tactical" vs traditional rifle

Ah, the no-scope bit is telling. You just like the more raw, traditional experience. No shame in that, but also no shame in not wanting that.

This makes me think of archery. I shoot with a recurve bow, no sights. It's weak and I'm not that accurate, but I like the raw experience of it. My son, on the other hand, really enjoys his compound bow, with stabilizer and multi-pin sight. He's way more accurate and effective with it, and that's great for him.

This is why there are so many different models of airgun, and bows, and cars, and ... etc.
Sounds familiar my son has my old 308 Ruger that he put a scope on and he can now drive nails at 100 yards. I like the experience and risk of knowing that the shot depends completely on me

Raccoon Pellet Choice/Tune (vs plinking)

They have hands. They open the latches on the coops. They grab a chicken or two.
Oh believe me we're highly aware. The coop was built with all this in mind. Pretty much complete heavy gauge hardware cloth, door latches have special clips and reversed carabiners. I'm not saying impossible but...
That said, at least so far they haven't gotten curious about them. I'll continue to put the food till I can get them all.

Raccoon Pellet Choice/Tune (vs plinking)

Haven't seen? This is what I'm wondering. If I get the rest of them, will I be ok at least till the next breeding cycle?

They are so comfortable here right now. The first 2 were always here early, 10 pm. Now they're gone, the cam saw nothing till nearly 1:30 am when the next showed up. I can't be sure but I think there's a mother/cub and one other loner.

We really are terrified what these things could do to the chickens. We've heard a million horror stories. I have no love lost for these monsters. I'm hopeful to end it at least for a while.

Traps are mostly impossible because the cats will end up there. Also, what fun would that be 😆

I like both. For a hunting gun I prefer a traditionally styled rifle. They are more comfortable to carry and point. For target shooting I prefer a gun with a vertical pistol grip. Especially when shooting prone or from a bench.

When FX came out with the DRS tactical there seemed to be a few people who were against the AR15ish style to it. And they didn’t just think it was ugly. They almost seemed to be offended by it. I don’t understand why.
I think this is a good point. I don't do target shooting. Just hunting. For hunting i always grab my wood stocks.

Dreaming of this scope

like I said dreaming

what scope features would you combine?

Huben  If you can only have one and cannot resell: Hubens K1 OR Daystate Delta Wolf?

On the one hand, that is a tough question - because it is so hard to know if you got the answer "right" or not. On the other hand, it really can be made simple by just realizing that you will probably love either one and never want to get rid of it . . . .

I have a Huben K1 in .22, and a Daystate Air Ranger that is also in .22 caliber - it's not a head to head comparison as I don't have the Delta Wolf, but it does involve knowledge of how great a gun Daystate makes. Both guns are great and I don't plan to sell off either. That said, the Huben is the one I always grab to shoot when I need a gun for pesting. The Daystate probably has the edge in accuracy, but the difference only shows up on paper and not on critters.

When the Delta Wolf came out, I really was wanting one. But in the end I realized that even if it lived up to everything I could imagine it could be, it would likely not replace the Huben in the pecking order (and I certainly did not see myself selling the Huben off with the Delta Wolf in hand). I went through the same thing when the Black Wolf came out and ended up in the same spot (although that one included me thinking I might sell off the Air Ranger as part of it - that was not the case with the Delta Wolf as they are different form factors).

It might get down to how likely you think you are to use the Delta Wolf as a platform, with multiple calibers and all that - if that really appeals to you, then that may be the path.

I wish you well in your choice, but I'll say it again - you'll almost certainly love whichever you get.

Raccoon Pellet Choice/Tune (vs plinking)

Very tough. They are related to bears.

But I try to use a .30, AEA Terminator, or my cranked up Condor .25.

Haven't seen one in a year.

Ring prices

To each his own that's what's great. I run sphur and Hawkins with diving boards for prs. Well used to but don't compete now in that arena. I usually run mdt on most everything from air rifles and up. I prefer quality over savings. I will save up a little longer to get it. I will say the UTG pros are a great set of rings in dovetail I used on my piston guns. Nothing wrong with other brands but I've had my share of cheaper ones break.

Ring prices

I might pay big bucks for a good set of blingy domestically machined rings if I had the proportionally costlier scope to match and justify the purchase. I mean why not? We sht our money away on more idiotic things, so whatever floats your boat.

As it is I'm not discerning enough to be able to detect the functional differences between a $30 set and something costing 3 or 4X more. Mechanically clamping a tube to a receiver is hardly rocket science, so it's pretty hard to screw that up.
