Daystate  Brand new to airguns.

Hello all,

Brand new to this sport, just bought my first FAC air gun and I have a few questions for you guys.

From what I've been told, in almost every country high pressure air vessels have to be Hydrostatic tested very 5 years (or so) with a "total lifetime" use of somewhere around 15 years (or so) which I'm good with for safety, but what about airguns like say an AirArms S510 or any other air guns that dosen't have a removable high pressure air tank.

Or say something like a water removable device like a "Tuxing water seperator" that are also charged to 250+ bars, or even the air whips we use to fill the guns/tanks?...

Pellets verses slugs

I tried chasing the "slug agenda" for a short while. A SHORT WHILE.... Like Vetmx said, you're probably better off getting a whole other gun for slugs.
Gun has to be able to push those slugs. Gun must be efficient in doing so. If you're doing 40 - 60 shots with pellets, it's no fun to reduce your shot count down to 10-15. The cost of slugs is also a major consideration. I shoot A LOT and I choose not to spend the extra $$ on slugs.
I abandoned that pursuit and stuck with pellets. My primary Gun is .25 cal with a 1:30 twist. I shoot 33.9 gn pellets @ 935 fps and get under 2 inch groups at 100 yds. Getting 40 shots out of the 580cc bottle on it. An FX should have no problem shooting pellets accurately out to 100 yds. Just gotta find the right pellet/tune and read the wind.....

What pellets to order?

Accurate and inexpensive is a tough combination. Most of the low priced pellets I've purchased over the years have been disappointing but there are occasional lottery wins that keep me playing the low odds game.

Lately, the best value I've found are the Norma heavies in both calibers (9.1gr and 17.6gr). Granted, not as good as some of the more expensive brands but far better than Crosman.

A word of caution on ordering pellets from Amazon...a lot of people have reported a high rate of shipping damage. My experience was similar. Here are the JSBs they sent me.

They graciously sent replacements...which also arrived damaged. Pellets that are shipped in carded packaging tend to fare better.
NEVER ORDER FROM AMAZON . WORD TO THE WISE.

Has anyone been able to fully take the reg apart? I ask because my 250z (also a Chinese gun) had a good amount of reg creep when I first got it. Turns out the lube was just crap. I took it apart, gave it a tiny polish and applied the Airshootist reg butter. That stuff is actual magic.
I'll have to check it out!

Airforce  AF Talon P Recommendations

Stocks look good, but I always go for performance over esthetics.

Springs, hammers, tophats, regulators, barrels and plenums AirForce guns have a lot of really simple upgrades. 30 minutes from stock to monster.
I consider the stock a performance improvement. It eliminated any issues of hold sensitivity and makes the TalonP more comfortable to shoot.

Is lubricating pellets necessary?

I don't know if it proves anything, but I always used to wash and lube my Crosman Premier Hollow Point (CPHP's) in batches of about 5 or 6 tins. Recently I got lazy and only washed them.
So I opened a new tin the other day, one of the batch that was only washed. When I started shooting out of every magazine of 12 I had 4 or 5 flyers.

My first thought was that this must have been a bad tin, but that could not be the case as I always put all the pellets of 5 or 6 tins in a finshing net and wash them and when dried I distribute them by weight back in the tins. So they are mixed.

As I hadn't changed anything other than omitting the lube, I lubed the pellets (just 2 light mists of the Pellgun stuff in a spraybottle) and turned the tin a couple of times to get it spread to see if it would make any difference...

And boy did it change the outcome for the good!

The first magazine after the lubing had 1 flyer, the rest of the magazines after that had ZERO fliers! This with my .22 BRK Pathfinder XR.

So draw your own conclusion, but for me CPHPs are performing WAY better in my Pathfinder after lubing!

Now some pellets are performing great as they are and do not neccesarily need a treatment (JSB comes to mind, and H&N advising themselves against(!) lubing as written in a post above) but for CPHPs I am a believer!

My 2cts...

One of the reasons I disassembled it was thinking there was an obstruction somewhere. I could not get to 900fps, even with 25g pellets.

I need to recheck the barrel seating depth. There's a plug on top that allowed them to drill the transfer port. I forgot to check it yesterday. Although the barrel has 360° of porting, it is possible there's something I missed there. The transfer port adjuster is fine, nothing I could see there...but it acted like it was closed down.

Recommendations for Battery Powered Air Compressor

I got back into PCPs several years ago when portable compressors appeared. I didn’t like the idea of constantly driving somewhere to fill up a tank.

Then after using a compressor that required an electrical outlet or car battery I reconsidered getting an air tank.

What appeals to me with this compressor is no plug in or external battery. It also takes up less space than an air tank.

When in the field, I won’t have to waste time with connecting a compressor to the car battery and starting the engine.

There is a battery store in the local area. I will take one of the batteries there to see if I can get a couple more spare ones that are compatible.
Yep. Really good compressor. Takes up no space. It takes the Mikita batteries from all I’ve read about it, so you should have no problem finding them. I always top off my gun when the regulator hits right around 150. Fills it to 250 in just a few minutes. Also, the compressor shut off gauge seems to match my guns gauge.

Could a regulator creep in the heat and stay at a higher pressure?

How about the hotter air being less dense? I noticed with both my long range capable guns that the poi is high when it's hot out(relates to the range and where in the parabolic travel the pellet is for your setup and initial zero, tilted base etc) but the regs and plenum are cool and indoors. I did have a gun get hot, forgot, and at 55 yards shot a full 10 inches high and made a spicey sound. Looked at the plenum pressure and it was way high. It took 3 shots to level it out.

Don't be flustered by this, you got good data and can plan for it in the future!
My experience has been like yours… heat makes the poi go up not down.

Could a regulator creep in the heat and stay at a higher pressure?

So I don’t think it’s heat related regulator creep. I say this because I live at 5000ft in the desert of SW Utah so I get huge temperature swings everyday. Additionally, my barra 250z has a tiny 15cc plenum and even though my reg is set at 2800psi it’s not weird for it to show as high as 3000… here’s the thing. If I ever get a POI shift it’s maybe a half mil (max) up. Never down. Creeping up should lead to a higher velocity not lower…. However, the barra having the HPA storage over the barrel gives it some ridiculously good barrel harmonics so that could be a factor.

Have you chrono’d to see if you’re getting speed changes? Because if you aren’t my money is on your Optic. Could be the gas it’s sealed with leaks or is susceptible to heat. Or the glass could be expanding as it heats up. I’m no expert though and prepared to be wrong about ALL of it haha.

That Interesting? Complete opposite. Im shooting aea master slugs 52.2gr around 890fps. I had trouble with zan slugs they were all over the target. I tried a sample pack and gave up at 59 gr I never tried the 63 or 68 gr. Shoots 45 and 50 gr pellets decent but i typically shoot the slugs. Hopefully you can get the regulator squared away.

Airgun Technologies  The Future of Springers – Are We Still in the Game?

There has always been a great divide in air-gunners. Target and Plinking. For decades the “true” Target shooters went after the best. FWB, Walther, Diana, etc. These companies also made good quality Springers for the less than dead serious target shooters. These Springers were well made and cheap to moderate in price. Pathetic knock offs were the only thing cheaper. The industry changed. Along comes the PCP. Powerful, lightweight, silent. But with baggage. The Springer in both Target and Plinker took it on the nose. Nothing left in the Target Springer. Most of the better quality Plinking Springers are also gone. Not much left. The pathetic Springer has gotten much better though. Seems this is the dim future of the ever shrinking Springer market.

A Busy Day Shooting Grey Squirrels

Hi Guys, out today on one of my regular shoots, to deal
with some grey squirrels causing trouble with
the owners wild bird feeders, my airgun today
is my Daystate Huntsman Classic in .20 cal
my fav hunting airgun.
I set up my gear shooting stool with Primos trigger shooting sticks
at 27 yds from the bird feeders under cover of some near by bushes

plenty of wildlife around, a wait of 20 mins and the 1st squirrel arrives
settles down and gets eating and gets an H&N ftt pellet in the brain
sending it flying off the feeder, next customer came along about 30 mins later
very nervous this one but it settled down and got a pellet between its eyes
before falling backwards off the feeder, in the next 90 mins i got x4 more squirrels
,the owner was very happyand invited me in for a coffee,
Happy days.

AEA  I can’t trust this gun. What now?

Can't believe they made the slug holders PLASTIC. What they were thinking? 😐
I just did a video on this. They ran the rifling all the way to both ends of the barrel (No chamber was cut). This meant that the plastic piece had to act as the chamber and get the pellet started onto the rifling. Generally, it works, but if the pellets get cocked even a little sideways, that plastic piece pretty much explodes.

Karma  Karma EQ in pieces..

I had the opposite issue. My reg creeps down 200psi in just a few shots...and I can't get above 870fps with 33g pellets (it's a .25) no matter what I do.
I want to shoot slugs...but I can't get the velocity.

Jts dead center pellets

I have been ridiculed in the past for sharing my opinion and experiences regarding JTS pellets. All of my guns shoot them accurately and they are more economical compared to JSB.
Recently got around to trying AEA pellets. They are of good quality but they have a few more fliers than JTS. Not horrible but when it's time to reorder, JTS will be what I'm getting.
Anyway, not guaranteed to work in every gun but worth a try.
