2025 N50 here I come (Raton, NM)

In August I will be heading to Raton, New Mexico for the National N50 benchrest contest. I was able to attend the first two events, then missed the next two due to Life.

I just finished making plans for this year and got some practice in. Light wind was enough for me to re-lear
Happy to see you back Jim. All things are good now since you’ll be back.

Events  Some thoughts for match directors or clubs trying to Grow Field Target

Ive been saying we need to grill out!! Some hot food would be awesome after shooting.

As a long-time match director, I suspect almost any MD would happily agree to that suggestion.😃 Although MDs have plenty on their plates already, I also suspect they'd welcome a heaping plate of BBQ after running the show in every other regard.🥵

All it would take is a grill, and volunteer to buy the food, cook, serve and clean up after the picnic.

Volunteers?

Anyone?

Hey... where'd everyone go?

What are the downsides of semi-auto?

It was (once) said that single-shot, hand feeding is the the best way (most accuracy) to load as you can feel every round as it's chambered. I think that is still mostly true, some magazine systems (like on the Weihrauch HW100) are extremely good, others leave much to be desired.

At the opposite end of things you have an automatic mechanism ramming the round home, properly aligned or not. Not so much a problem for centerfire rounds, could be terrible for mutilating soft lead pellets and accuracy would suffer.

Which to choose depends on your needs. For deer hunting at close range in heavy brush I preferred a semiautomatic, out in the fields, a bolt action.

I don't think I could justify (or would want) the extra cost and complexity of a semiautomatic PCP. For squirrel and rabbit hunting I find a modern side-lever system to be more than fast enough and it sill let's me feel/control the loading. I like that.

Having owned semiautomatic. 22 rimfires I can agree with comments above that you can burn through a lot a of ammunition in a short time and there's a strong tendency to get in the habit of using 2 or 3 quick shots where 1 good one is all that was really required. That being said, rapid fire plinking is a lot of (expensive) fun! 😉

Good luck with your choice!

Cheers!

Petition to Allow Laser Range Finders in Field Target Competitions

Im conflicted about this.......
Im sure it would add some points to my score. But.... it's one more thing to carry around and manage while your in the shooter's box and "on the clock". If you become dependent on it, then it dies during the match, you're back to doing it the old method anyway

Ive shot matches with some _very_ talented shooters. the kind of folks who only miss 5 over the course of a two-day match. Handing those kinds of talent a range finder could/will lead to courses being cleaned. Course designers and match directors will then start upping the difficulty levels to prevent that, making it even harder on shooters who aren't as proficient.

IMO there are other ways to grow the sport, but that's for another thread.......

Benjamin  Tank options

If you know you have a convenient and reasonably priced place to get your tank filled then and only then does it make sense, in my opinion, to buy a DOT approved tank. My issue is just that the technical basis for the DOT regulations was never great and has now essentially been disproved. The Navy proved that the regulations are grossly conservative. But they are laws and commercial establishments that fill expired tanks could get in trouble.

If you do not have place to get your tank filled, then I don't see why it makes sense to pay extra to get a DOT approved tank. A Chinese tank approved to European standards or an expired fireman's bottle seems to me to be a better way to spend money. Tests have demonstrated there is a lot of margin in carbon fiber reinforced tanks. The biggest cause of failure in Navy tanks was damage to the threads of the tests caused by hydro testing. No injuries no catastrophic failures. LOTS of experience.

Until somebody forces DOT to pull their head of their behind we are stuck with this silly situation.

Thomas Air  Damaged skirts, does it really matter?

I had made years ago a SKIRT straightening tool that was made to make skirts round again without making them flared out or larger in diameter.
By playing with a Lathes compound angle finding the matching angle of skirts I.D. made up a few of these tools for the different pellets being shot frequently.
Still use a few of them to this day and am sold on the premise it helps accuracy and saves otherwise damaged pellets in general.

Light pressure and a twist Back-N-Forth your done recreating a pellet accurate in skirt dimension as it was produced.

I think there would be a market for these.

AirMaks Arms  Katran Compact in .22 - oh Yeah!

Congrats! I don't know why the Katrans are not more popular, at least on the forum. They're relatively cheap. I think the reg issues from the Kraits was bad PR for Airmaks. I would not hesitate to purchase one again now. They are light, sturdy and accurate. I've got a .25 LB that just drills Heavy Mk II's at 60FPE. I love the smooth solid feeling actions and being able to cycle them easily with a finger.

Oh USPS, let me count the ways I detest you

about the same around here the last few years but then again FedEx and UPS are no better fact is for me I would arguable they are horible through pages from the truck into the drive, drop at the wrong address, wrong town and yess even the wrong city. once in a field in the rain so I think they are all horrific.

What are the downsides of semi-auto?

I agree with the general consensus that semi-auto is a not necessarily needed but are cool to have. I have had two in my hobby journey. An LCS19 and a Huben. The LCS was not all that accurate and was underwhelming. The Huben was much more accurate and was fun, and did provide me some needed fairly accurate followup shots on game a few times. I don’t have any semi-autos now and don’t miss them.

AirMaks Arms  Katran Compact in .22 - oh Yeah!

25 yards, CPHP 14.3, bench with front bed pillow supports, wind likely under 10mph, but much lower when I zeroed for the wife. I don't recall how many shots taken. She learned that a black reticle on a black small target took an adjustment. Out of the family of 4, 3 liked and 1 firmly stated sticking with her Diana 34 (yes, teenage stuff). Can't shoot a pcp with a scope the same as a springer with irons. AN, I'm seriously consider letting go of my L2 to fund a Katran or Krait now. Oh, I'm steeling the wife's thunder in this posting. This is HER target and she wants to hold on to it:

30-Yard Challenge

Speaking of Crowns... I swapped the 700mm barrel off of my .22 Crown and swapped the 500mm back on.

I had been shooting heavier pellets with the long 700mm barrel since last fall. The rifle shoots great with the 700mm, but it was always insanely accurate with the 500mm shooting 18.13g.

I was texting Greg and Tommy after I did the swap. Sighting it in with the 500mm, I shot 1 group at 40 yards - 5 shots measured .126" center to center - I texted it to Tommy and Greg and said it was now time for a card...

...Tommy texted back and said that I better shoot a 240, lol.

Well, first card with the .22 Crown at 500mm is a leaderboard submission for 40-Challenge (but not a 240):
197 11X
.22 Crown Mk 2 (500mm)
FX 18.13g at 900fps (FX Chrono)
Sightron SII 36X fixed power.

Here is a picture of the current state of my two Crowns. The blue one is using Greg's (NAProf) 380mm .177 barrel. The green one is the .22 500mm. I recently swapped the 480cc bottle on the green Crown to 580cc. Both Crowns bought off the AGN Classifieds. The blue one came with a synthetic stock but had the big 580cc bottle. I found the blue stock used on the AGN Classifieds. Both rifles are insanely accurate as per my leaderboard submissions. I've done some modest work on both rifles refining them (even improvements to the crummy FX triggers) - but if your looking to target shoot with pellets, its hard to beat a used Crown or Dreamline for the money.

Ed,
I think the 380mm barrel on the Crown looks awesome! With the moderator it has the look of a hunting carbine, but shoots like a target rifle. A lot of folks pooh-pooh the Superlight barrel system, but I think it makes a lot of sense.

Adding mass to the barrel doesn't damp the vibrations, it only moves the natural frequency lower (maybe out of the range of the exciting frequency). Retaining the barrel at specific positions along its length with o-rings limits the y and z axis motions (but not rotational motions), effectively creating a node. Changing the vibration mode shape by introducing nodes can decrease vibration amplitude. The weak point is the system is only as robust as the shroud. So I am very careful not to whack the barrel when using my Crown for FT.

Sorry for the engineering musings.

Cheers,
Greg

P.S. - I am trying to design a Crown-type liner retaining system for the DRS.
